House Cannith was ordered to destroy all creation forges and the creation of Warforged has become stricktly prohibited. However this has not stopped house Cannith frome makeing new machines of war. Rather then giving these new constructs a semblance of life however, Piolit Golems are WORN around a living creature as a suit of armor would be.

A Piolit Golem stands roughly fifteen feet tall and usually takes one medium sized creature to run it properly. Piolit Golems are not as difficult to control as airships (as there is no sentience or elements bound to them) but a bit of training is required in order to use one. Any character who does not have the Piolit Golem feat (listed below) must make a knowledge (arcana) check every round while inside one or lose control and cause the golem to preform a random action.

Random Actions
d% Action preformed
1-30 Take no action
31-60 Attack closest target
61-90 Move 30ft in a random direction
91-100 Allow for another Knowledge (arcana) check

DC for the Knowledge check is usually listed with the specific Piolit Golems description.
________________________

Piolit Golem (general)
Benefit: You can use a Piolit golem without needing to make a Knowledge (Arcana) check.
Normal: You need to make a Knowledge (Arcana) check before you can control a Piolit Golem.

Sample Piolit Golem

Warhammer, House Cannith model
HP: The Golem has a total of 80 HP with a hardness of 20.
AC: If a character is attacking the person useing this Piolit Golem then treat the rider as though he had a +10 armor bonus to AC.
Size: The user of a Piolit golem is treated as the size of the Golem (in this case large).
Check DC: The Knowledge (Arcana) DC for pioliting this Piolit Golem is 16.
Skills: The user of this Piolit Golem takes a -8 penalty to all checks that have an armor penalty as long as he remains inside it.
Speed: The speed of this model (and subsiquently the speed of the user of this model) is 60ft.
Abilities: Strength: 26. Dexterity: 8. Constitution: 23.
Weapons: The Warhammer Cannith Model comes with one large martial weapon (to the DM's disgretion) and one large sized simple weapon (also to the DM's disgretion). The Model also has a slam attack that deals 1d10 damage.

Exactly.

I would see this as being more of a holdover from times BEFORE Warforged were created. Back in those days, you could make constructs, but they were of very limited autonomy, and the only way to make them capable of more independent tactics and strategy was to stick an intelligent creature inside, on top, or beside them (with inside being the safest). Warforged were part of a desire to make a piolit golem that had all the tactical/strategic autonomy of a piloit golem, but free up more living souls for other tasks. Now that the creation of Warforged has been banned, production and the market for piolit golems is slowly increasing again.

I'm thinking of something entirely magical. No clockwork parts, and really not much physical room inside to accomodate anything living. The operator just magically "merges" with the golem, using their own will and intelligence to control it. They don't have to move their limbs to move the golem's. It's not a mechanical construct driven by actuators or gears. It's a magical one, like all the other "technology" in Ebberon.

I think AC and physical ability scores should be fixed and based on the machine, not modifiers added to the operator's own abilities. I also don't know about the % to perform random actions. With nothing intelligent actually controlling it, a failed piloting save should not result in it performing something that would require some kind of intelligent control (like attacking a nearby target or walking about).

hmmm... interesting proposal. I'll change the first post a bit.

Huh... why a constitution score ??? It's more of an inanimate object than a living construct, don't you think ?

Aside from that, I like the idea. It reminds me of World of Warcraft, with their steamwarrior armors.

While I probably wouldn't introduce it into a campaign I'd run, its an interesting idea. But the idea could be using a regular stone/steel/whatever golem, with a special astral space inside. Pilots would use some sort of magical device to enter this extradimentional space [amulet like the amulet of ooze riding?]. From here, the construct would merge with mind of the 'rider'. This would take a toll on the 'rider' of course possibly inflicting int or wis damage. The rider, being technically in another plane would maintain immunity to mind affecting effects, with the exception of that feat that letes you fire across planes. Anyhow, basically you've now got a golem with a rider or driver.

Now to make it interesting. When the golem is destroyed, the rider's stuck. He has to find a way to get his physical body out of that space. And have it so multiple people, 2-3, maybe more if the golem is bigger, becase it should take more mental power to control. Only one may enter/exit at a time, and you have to have an amulet to do so. But, this also could allow for 'hijacking'. Make it so that a certain spell, or magic item, might throw the driver out of the golem. I'lll let someone else take it from here before I go insane with putting more in it.

Actually, in the original incarnation I'd see it more as Power Armor for Eberron.

@Underworld Lord
Another idea for this would be a specific spot on the golem the "rider" has to touch in order to get inside. This spot would normally be protected by a thick armor plate that can be unlocked by a key/amulet/whatever. However, it can also be sundered...

I also don't know about the % to perform random actions. With nothing intelligent actually controlling it, a failed piloting save should not result in it performing something that would require some kind of intelligent control (like attacking a nearby target or walking about).
That depends. Usually, there's an elemental inside a golem - which can go berserk.

Any character who does not have the Piolit Golem feat (listed below) must make a knowledge (arcana) check every round while inside one or lose control and cause the golem to preform a random action.
I'd say a UMD is more appropriate - or straight charisma if there's an elemental inside.

Powered armor are commonly considered "mecha".

The OP's explanation explicitly stated lack of a bound elemental or any other kind of intelligence acting upon the golem other than the operator. There's nothing in it other than the operator to go berserk.

well by the random idea my basic idea is that if the guy doesn't know how to operate it (that's why I used Knowledge (Arcana)) he's essentially trying to get it to do what it wants but is failing at doing so because he imputed a wrong command.

Think of it similar to that of "Pressing random buttons".
Alex_

There's a button for "move 30 feet this way" and "attack closest target"? :P Those represent fairly deliberate actions.

01-25-07, 07:47 PM
lol well it's more along the lines of knowing how to control the magics that run the golem then direct buttons.

I don't really have anything to add (except that I'm all for magical power armor and mecha), but what in the name of Galifar is "piolit?"

Probably a pilot who wanted to obscure what he is.

Powered armor are commonly considered "mecha".
I thought there was a dividing line, mainly depending on which one of the terms "wearing" and "piloting" is more appropriate. Anything with a cockpit would be considered mecha, anything where the user's appendages reach into those of the construct power armor.
On the other hand side, I'm not exactly an expert for this stuff.

The problem I see here is that knowledge Arcana is usually purely theoretical and often on a more general basis, in the same way that Knowledge: Warfare wouldn't let you substitute it for attack rolls. Otherwise, Spellcraft would lose its purpose.

If you want to get truly technical, "mecha" began as a term used to describe all the wonderfully advanced machines you saw in most science fiction/fantasy Japanese animation. It described not only humanoid walkers with crews, but also androids, spacecraft, weapons, and most other technological devices else with lots of mechanical parts.

An often shared trait in these series is the presence of large crewed bipedal vehicles. The popularity of Battletech and it's "Mechs" to describe the same encouraged further use of the term to apply more specifically to such machines. However, the term has continued to see some use when referring to other things, especially powered armor, which in many instances can mix the concept of being "worn" and the operator in a "cockpit" like Appleseed's Landmates or Escaflowne's Guymelefs.

So all are acceptable depending on context.

lol well it's more along the lines of knowing how to control the magics that run the golem then direct buttons.

I understand, but still, it's hard to make a mistake, such as pulling off a successful attack against the closest person, or moving your full movement in a round.

Perhaps penalties such as losing a move or standard action for that round? When attacking an opponent already engaged in melee with an ally, the piolit would have to make a save or pass a skill test or run a % of hitting whatever's in any of the square 5 feet from the target, or just taking a penalty to the attack roll to show they're not "hitting as good".

Not that I'm a large fan of too many special rules. If you start adding too many details and explanations about how it works and why this thing isn't widespread compared to other magical devices in the setting, that kind of make it stick out more. Avoid needless exposition.

"It's rare and expensive" is often all the disadvantages you need in most cases.

Here's another Piloit Golem that I made.
_____________________

Slider Cannith Model
HP: The Golem has a total of 50 HP with a hardness of 5.
AC: If a character is attacking the person useing this Piolit Golem then treat the rider as though he had a +3 armor bonus to AC.
Size: Medium
Check DC: The Knowledge (Arcana) DC for pioliting this Piolit Golem is 15.
Skills: The user of this Piolit Golem takes a -2 penalty to all checks that have an armor penalty as long as he remains inside it. The rider gains a +10 on spot, search and listen checks as long as he remains inside.
Speed: The speed of this model (and subsiquently the speed of the user of this model) is 120ft. Also: The model hovers just a few feet above the ground and as such he can run over rough terrain without takeing a penalty.
Abilities: Strength: 10. Dexterity: 25. (I got rid of CON, use the riders CON score instead)
Weapons: The Slider Cannith Model doesn't come with any weapons. It is meant to be a scout and best with speed.

Not to be a buzzkill, but there is already an official writeup for this basic idea. Iron Golem Armor. Its a suit of armor you put on and basically become an Iron Golem.

Problem is, its a Major Epic Artifact.

Think he's trying to go some kind of archaic pronunciation to make it sound less "modern".

What book is that from, and why would it be an artifact? Sounds more like something you'd find in the monster manual and have the PCs fight than treasure.

From here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/artifacts.htm#golemArmor)
Golem Armor

This enormous suit of black iron +10 full plate armor increases the wearer’s size by one category (to a maximum of Colossal). The wearer gains a +10 enhancement bonus to Strength and is rendered immune to mind-affecting effects, poison, disease, and similar effects. He or she is not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage. Golem Armor is immune to rust attacks. The wearer of Golem Armor gains damage reduction 15/adamantine. He or she also cannot regain hit points by any means (mundane or magical) while the armor is worn. It requires 1 hour to don or extract oneself from Golem Armor.

There are also the D20 Future rules for mecha. IMO, they're actually much more suited for running magic mecha in D&D than scifi mecha in D20 Future.

If you just grab the Future SRD (.rtf format) (http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/msrd/Future.zip), you'll probably be able to adapt the mecha rules without having Modern (or the Modern SRD (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/modern/smack/srdhome.html)).
