I want to make a game of Six Stones the focus of my next gaming session. I think I'm going to have my PC, who is in Graywall, have to win a game of Six Stones in order to ask a favour from the medusa who is running the game.

I think the best way to make this exciting would be to come up with:
a) an exciting venue to play the game in, and
b) a team of six other contestants who each have a neat concept

I'm thinking the other contestants, or at least most of them, should be considered champions at Six Stones and that the game itself should be some sort of Grand Prix or Championship match. (I'm sure there's a great word for the sort of game I'm thinking of but I can't think of it at the moment.)

So what's the best strategy for winning, especially considering that I'm going to be using the biggest baddest cockatrice that anyone has ever seen this side of Khyber? (advanced to 15HD, possibly with templates)

If anyone can think of any excuses why the PC has to fight and win in the game of Six Stones, I'd really appreciate any suggestions. It could just be for the personal amusement of the medusa, or simply that their seventh player dropped out recently and the medusa running it needs one more... and no one around is insane enough to play against the six champions that are in the game, nor do they have enough money to cover the entry fee - so the medusa will cover it personally. Sound reasonable?

So basic ideas for the champions...
Name - race - class - signature move (reason for fighting)
Sankalp - goblin - monk - stunning fist (trying to improve his skills through battle)
Goresh - bugbear - paladin - smite evil (fighting for the fallen glory of the Dhakani empire)
Oaf - ogre - grappler - picks up people and throws them at cockatrice (in it for the money)
Rend - troll - cleric of the keeper - slashes everyone (thinks he is doing the work of the Keeper)
Ishtak - gnoll - assassin - hide in plain sight (in it for the money)
Meksoor - harpy - dirge singer - fly out of reach (wants to see how far she can get by exploiting the rules)
Kech - longtooth razorclaw shifter - barbarian - rending attack leaves others helpless (in it for the money)

Does anyone have any other concepts for competitors that would work?

Put it in a labyrinth and/or some "bombed out" ruins. So the arena is littered with partial/full cover. Tight corridors, multiple levels (careful not to block people's views though, just a few roofs and things that can be jumped on), traps like pitfalls (but with a way to get out so the entertainment goes on as long as possible), other minor monsters (if you want to arm the competitors, perhaps there are variants of the game but I think unarmed is best) of course you need a huge audience full of monsters cheering and jeering in the most bizarre collection of sounds imaginable.

Best strategy for winning is to 1) Always know where the cockatrice is. No idea how to do that beyond having an unbelievably awesome listen check. (Competitors should be stripped of any benefit whatsoever. Magical gear, buffs etc.) and 2) force other competitors into the cockatrice's gaze.

I do not think harpy's or other flying creatures should be allowed unless grounded somehow. Also you should remember Six Stones is not a game you survive in very long. It's a game for the foolish and desperate where 5 people die and one lives. It's a bloodsport of the condemned. Most participants should be forced and fighting for their survival/freedom. One or two might be crazy and working for glory or money but not most.

These "champions" should be reknowned criminals and villains of Droaam. Those who have failed the Sisters. Attempted to overthrow a leader and failed or just did something to displease the current establishment. But because they're not your average commoner this Medusa (who's a huge fan of the games) has brought them for the greatest game of Six Stones in history.

To that end here is one possible "champion"
Ocypete a daughter of that Truenamer Harpy fighting the Hags whose names I can't remember. (Someone help me out here). She sided with her mother when the Hags seized power but was later caught and tortured (her wings were removed among other things) as it was attempted to use her as bait. Her mother never even considered trying to save her. They say Sora Katra speaking on behalf of her sister Sora Teraza said she must win ten! (unheard of) Six Stones matches for her freedom and that they would grant her wings again and exile from Droaam. She's won NINE. This is her final match. A big fan "favorite" in that most really want her to lose. She's a popular villain for the crowd to hiss at and boo. But she has a large following of harpies that support her. Not because she fought the Hags who they support but just as a symbol of the ferocity of a Harpy even without wings.

This cockatrice needs some template or something that will grant blindsense or some other way to hunt down that assassin using HiPS.

Why any PC would jump into this insanity I can't possibly imagine. The reward would have to be spectacular. Or if they have a death wish. As for why the Medusa would let them compete? Sora Katra speaking of behalf of Sora Teraza has said to present the PC with the option of competing if they wish. She seems to be completely aware of the PC and their goals and has said to grant them their wish should they succeed.

Whoa, thanks Shady314 for taking the time to type that up! There are a lot of really good ideas that I'm going to use.

Did you have any thoughts on the medusa running the game and what kind of personality it would have?

No problem. I type fast so it didn't take long.

Well obviously this Medusa must have a great deal of influence to set this up. I say influence though and not power. My first thought was an urbane aesthete. A cultured medusa that believes in the Hags and the vision of not just a monstrous nation but a monstrous civilization. Perhaps even one day a new Age of Monsters but no Dhakaan or goblins this time. To that end she works to bring art to Droaam. First by procuring works of art from across Khorvaire and secondly by being a patron of the arts of sorts but her vision of art is of course terribly twisted. Entrails splattered across a canvas for example. She likes to see life and death captured in a chaotic fashion. Being a medusa she of course loves stonework specifically actions caught instantly in stone. A minotaur burying an axe in a human's skull both turned to stone at that moment. The axe firmly lodged in the now stone skull. The look of terror on a Six Stone's contestant face as he runs into the cockatrice.

This makes her darling cockatrice one of her artists. Perhaps her most favorite (Obviously this makes messing with the cockatrice a truly terrible, awful idea.) and the entire Six Stones Arena it's canvas. The arena can be littered with the fragments of previous "works of art" many ground to dust beneath the heels of newer entrants. She sees this of course as a symbol for progress within the artwork. New "moments" captured atop of old replacing them. A twisted cycle. She enjoys debating whether it is actually a cycle of stagnation or renewal expressed.

Her abode should house an insanely eclectic hodgepodge of art from across Khorvaire. The collection spans styles, eras, expense and taste. The hideously gaudy is next to the superbly sublime across from a cheap watercolor painted months ago by a hack artist in Sharn hanging above a priceless Dwarven tapestry on the floor mixed in of course with terrible (but some beautiful) works of art created by the inhabitants of Droaam. Is it that she doesn't get art at all or are her tastes and interests simply too alien for most civilized races to comprehend? She is wealthy and it's said her work brings her into contact (not physical presence contact but messages received) with the Sisters themselves. She has a great deal of authority among the medusas. She has authority over the public display of all sculptures and other objects of art which includes petrified enemies and often involves any piece of architecture erected by Medusa hands no matter where in Khorvaire it is. It is a position of great prestige and respect though somewhat ceremonial.
