If you think that having more classes than you have letters in your character's name is normal, you might be a powergamer.

If you took both Warforged Juggernaught and Reforged, you might be a powergamer.

If you convinced your DM to let your changling take Warshaper, you might be a powergamer.

If you are the only one of your race in Khovaire because of how many templates you have, you might be a powergamer.

If your character is in character by addressing King Kaius in "leet" speak, you might be a powergamer.

If your character can out shapeshift Rakshasa, out mind a Quori, out drink King Boranel, and is crazier than a Daelkyr, in a strictly statistical sense, you might be a powergamer.

If you have a Legendary, Horrid, Magebred animal who is a companion, familiar, paladin mount all at once, you might be a powergamer.

If you can make a charicter without using anything from The Players handbook, you might be a power gamer.

If you think the cast of the Forgoten Freadom are underpowered, you might be a power gamer.

If your charicters get there names by mixing up the arconims from the splat books you used building them, you might be a power gamer.

If you need something more chaleging than Xen'dirk, you might be a power gamer.

If the morning was caused just to stop one of your charicter concepts, you might be a power Gamer.

If you are a 5th level human fighter with a +2 greatsword, AC 30, a +12 to hit, who hides in the back of the party until the fighting has started, and all the NPC's who aren't villains think you're the greatest hero ever, and the rest of the party are your lackeys, you might be a powergamer. (or just the lousy DM's best friend.)

If you convince your DM that theres a way to play Pun Pun in Eberron, you might be a powergamer.

Y'know... these are almost all Munchkins, not powergamers. The terms aren't synonymous.

If your preferred cohort is a pseudonatural half-fiend human barbarian (with a penchant for the All-Girls academy of Sharn), you just might be a powergamer (and a hentai freak...).

If your cohort is a Dealkyr, you most definitely are a Munchkin!

If you can make a charicter without using anything from The Players handbook, you might be a power gamer.

Well in that light....

If you play a wizard, cleric, or druid just using Players handbook, you might be a powergamer.

If you use a spiked chain, Combat Reflexes, and Improved Trip, you might be a powergamer.

If you are playing a character with multiple half templates for example a half-Dragon, half-celestial, half-troll, half-mindflayer, half-vampire, half-Fey pseudonatural, half-fiend Stone Giant, you might be a powergamer and/or a munchkin.

If your character can kill a Rajah just by having it look at your character you might be a powergamer.

If you can defeat swarms of dragons the way a normal character defeats swarms of kobolds, you might be a powergamer.
DarkWarriorKarg

12-06-06, 11:57 PM
What is the difference?

Generally speaking, powergamers min/max within the RAW or within houserules, and are, for the most part, happy if their character is the best their is at what they do.

Munchkins will seek out loopholes, create them where they don't exist, manipulate the DM if possible and might even cheat and/or ignore rules. All in an effort to be better than everyone else.

A Powergamer might take levels in both Reforged and Warforged Juggernaut, stopping in reforged before losing the composite plating. This, BTW, is a mechanical Powergamer. The combo doesn't have to make sense, just be legal. Many of the Powergamers I know try to have a logical progression to their character.

A Munchkin would try to convince the DM to let him keep the composite plate with full levels of Reforged and Juggernaut.

While not all powergamers are munchkins, all munchkins are powergamers, so its best to use the superset to get maximum flexibility.

I see them more as 2 groups that form an intersection. After all, powergamers follow the rules. Munchkins generally don't.

You might be a powergamer if . . .

you attempt to re-ignite the last war because "think of all the xp!".

the only reason you stop the last war from returning to Khorvaire is you were promised an xp bonus.

the only thing that has differentiated the last four characters you made were the levels they reached and their names- and you don't remember their names.

you never understood why you couldn't multiclass barbarian/paladin . . . seriously, that would be totally pwnz0r!! :P

So any melee character with a 16 strength that is 3rd level or above is a powergamer? I'd like to note that some of these are just silly. At a high enough level, it's not a matter of being a power gamer than just a matter of know what to use when to use it.

Look, I'm not running around insulting anyone. I just am mentioning humourous things that I have seen, or can imagine seeing in my games, directly relating to people who are powering the game. One of those jokes I am the guilty party, in fact. (The Laser one, in case you are wondering)

(Nitpick: I think that a straight kalashtar psion using nothing from the PHB, using just XPH and ECS feats, needn't be a powergamer. The PHB just doesn't have much of interest to psions. (... Also, what's actually powerful about juggernaut/reforged? I thought that the objection to juggernaut/reforged was the philosophical dichotomy, not that they're especially powerful, unbalanced characters. Then again, I don't have RoE (yet).)The main problem is that ReForged grants the ability to fully benefit from healing magic, while the Juggernaut makes you immune to healing magic. The cheese comes from someone taking all of Juggernaught, and then dipping into ReForged just long enough to get the ability to heal again, and then not finishing ReForged, allowing them to totally bypass the single biggest balancing factor of the Juggernaught.

If you use Ur-Priest, Sublime Chord, or Divine Crusader minimum caster levels to emulate spell requirements as an artificer, scribing a scroll of Miracle at level 7, you might be a powergamer.

Actually, there you are a munchkin. Artificer allows you to use your base character level +2 to determine what items you can make. You actually need to be about 15th level before you can craft anything with Miracle, assuming you use Ur-preist as the class you emulate. You need to be 7th level (IIRC) to get into Ur-Priest.

The artificer's effective caster level for meeting item creation prerequisites is artificer level + 2. A non-caster (or cleric) 5/ur-priest 9 with high enough (28) wisdom casts 9th level spells, and has 14 character levels, but still has just 9 caster levels. This is not, of course, to say that any sane DM would allow such ur-priest abuse, but it's still important to remember that a scroll of holy sword requires 7 effective caster levels, not 14, because paladins are half-casters.

-Hey, if it exists in Dnd, it exists in Eberron. That would include a Killoren Warlock.

-I don't like giving my character's odd numbers with point buy...It makes me feel uneasy. Same with why I don't raise my con or int score with leveling. Too much work.

-So, that elven bard with an 8 wisdom, he is being powergamed? Thank you for that information.

-Ok, I'll admit that even I don't have a reply to this one.

Almost all of these can be explained away with roleplaying reasons. I'm not trying to start a flame war. I am just pointing out how one could make each of these characters (or even all of them at once), and yet still not be a powergamer.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the Ur-Priest uses the cleric levels as caster levels; check under the spells per day section. I'm positive the Sublime Chord uses the bard levels as caster levels. I don't know the Divine Crusader, but I'm pretty sure that if it requires caster classes to get into, it uses them as additional caster levels.

Admittedly, that one isn't too hard.

Take a level 10 rogue. Give her two-weapon fighting and improved two-weapon fighting. Give her two shortwords (make 'em masterwork if you want to be extravagant). Flank against a sorta low-AC target with discernable anatomy. Four hits at 6d6 per hit = 24d6 damage.

A reasonably built combat rogue, but not quite a ludicrously optimized abomination.

Actualy, if you are a changling with one of the changling racial feats, I think its racial emulation, you can use minor shape change to look like an Aventi and you will pick up the Aquatic subtype, meaning you can breathe water. You temporarily lose the ability to breathe air, but you get gills.

If you emulate a creature of the air subtype using the same feat, they always have fly speeds, as denoted in the subtype's discription. Since you'd pick up the air subtype, you gain a fly speed with perfect manuverability.

Don't know how to do the extra arms. Maybe change shape into a Thri-kreen?

What are you talking about? Some of the most over powered stuff comes from Faerun (Pun-Pun, Cheater of Mystara, Twice-Betrayer of Shar).

I still hold that a lot more of WotC's stuff would be balanced if they let the seniors of the CO boards hash out the mechanics first.

Is this a mechanical Powergamer...

Wizard 6 / Fighter 1 / Spell Sword 3 / Havoc Mage 5

Feats of consequense:

Craft Magical Arms and Armor - to make armor light enough to stay within the 15% arcane spell failier but still get a +8 to armor bonus (ie- Celestial Chain)

Spell Penetration
Greater SPell Penetration
Arcane Strike (absorb a spell as a free action and get a +1 to hit per spell level used, and 1d4 extra damage per spell level used, (ie- absorb a 4th lvl spell and get +4 to hit and +4d4 damage on your melee attacks with that weapon for that round.))
Practiced Spell Caster

Spells of note: Firestride Exhalation (from dragon magic)
Lightning Leap (from complete mage)

Abilities, battlecaster- able, with a full round action, make a single attack and cast a spell of 8th lvl or lower. (this character has 6th lvl spells.)

Extreemly nasty little buger this char is, having no fear in one on one melee, or 3 on 1 melee, as the battlecasting allows no attacks of opportunity on spell casting, and even if triped, this wonderful character can fight from the ground easilly casting levitate or fly to take away such a tactic. Nothing is more dramatic than closing on this mage, having him do the lighting leap through the guy and one or two others, then appearing on the back side of the last person she lightning'd through, and absorb a spell and nail him for an additional 24 points of slashing damage. Nasty... Nasty...

What think you? A machanic powergamer? Or just patient leveling until the havoc mage kicked in. I admit that this girl was not as effective until she took her first level of Havoc mage at 10th lvl. She has grown into quite a combatant of late.

No, that's just maximizing your earning potential. That's called thinking out of the box*. If you're being paid to both protect and kill them you will succeed regardless of the outcome and you'll be paid by both sides (preferably in advance). The smart play would be to kill one and save one so that you can claim a victory to both factions and neither will be the wiser.

Huh? That's powergaming? I always called it playing both sides of the field. It's sneaky, conniving, double-dealing, duplicitous, underhanded and totally in character for pretty much every rogue I've ever played. Unless you're playing gestalt, in which powergaming is implied anyway :D .

On a side note: several people have said that PCs based anime characters are powergaming. While this is true in some case (I'm looking at you, Dragonball), not all anime characters are powergamed (and some just cannot be, no matter how hard you try). I dunno. One build idea I've liked is something like soulknife 2/cleric 4/soulbow 4/Exorcist of the Silver Flame 10. That has two base and two prestige classes (same as the dreaded wizard/fighter/spellsword/havoc mage), but its point isn't really mechanical power. Shooting flaming, holy, axiomatic, silvered arrows of psychic energy just makes a unique and interesting warrior of the Silver Flame.

I appreciate the replies. It appears that this build, (wizard/Fighter/SpellSword/Havoc Mage) is mutually agreed upon as being mechanically powergaming.

One more Question to follow this last one up is: What if a player looks at Prestige classes as progressions in abilities that have been learned through experiences during the campaign? Such as... "The reason I took spell sword is because, for the first 7 levels, I had a 10-15% chance of spell failier due to my armor I wore. I figure I learned how to cast during that time to lower my spell casting falier rate..."

the other is, "I took havoc mage becasue I was involved in so much melee combat, that Arcane Strike as a feat didnt cover me. I still wanted to cast spells, and once the wizard slayers were introduced (where I could not cast defensively), I had to adapt to my circumstances, thus, I learned to cast without provoking an attack of opportunity."

These things I totally agree with, as I was there in the campaign this this girl. Is it just luck it turned out as well as it did? I mean, she really didnt start kicking arse until lvl 12 or so. What think you all? Good reasoning?

These sound like things that you actualy did. My question is: How?

For the paladin thing... it's quite simple. Well.. not that simple. it was 23 3rd level paladins who were on a pilgrimage, also, you need to have a DM who understands the difference between being CE, and acting CE. After all, it's not evil to defend yourself. And starting an argument where the LG paladin's decide you're evil and attack first, is also, not evil. Hence denying them their smite. Two feats and a couple spells also make things much fuzzier, 9 of them became fallen paladins the round they attacked and successfully hit, the rest were not as I attacked them first with the flats of my twin katana's (hey now thats not power gaming, :P), and thus allowed them to keep their status. All in all, toasted most of them, I was an 6th level Fighter/7th Level Ur Priest, and I had Able Learner and if I recall I had a level 2 levels of monk which were stripped from me by the combination of a wish spell and a level drain thing.

as for the second.. well, it was a very long and involved process, but suffice to say, the other players were both completely pq'd, and amazed, but I gave them a share of the gold. hehe...

If you get constipated, and stand around grunting and straining all day, and people call you the greatest warrior in the universe and try to emulate your squatting fighting style, you might be a power gamer. Or a Dragonball Z character. Same thing really.

Is this where I mention that I did build Goku in Eberron? Gestalt Monk/Warlock Shifter with Beasthide.
Yes folks, he even powers up to a tougher, harder to kill form. :D

If you have built General Grevious (The cartoon version. not the lame film version) in Eberron, you are in all likelyhood a powergamer.

((Ok. Not for eberron though she [yah she] could easily be run in Eberron. Thri-Kreen 2 / Fighter 2 / Barbarian 1 / Dervish 10 / Tempest 5 . Ph33r it. Well, at the moment only Dervish 4 / Tempest 0... ))

If you routinely build characters based on films, videogames, or especially anime or videogames that are similar to anime, you are probably a powergamer.

((so, so, so guilty. Demyx from Kingdom Hearts II. Working on Axel, Xigbar, Xemnas, Riku, Sora... the list goes on. Have helped to build Rinoa.))

Building characters based on film is powergaming? What about this:

Dante Hicks - Human commoner 1

... ok. point taken. Though now you've given me horrible, horrible ideas about this. the question is, where IS the Eberronian equivalent of New Jersey?

If you think "isn't that standard operating procedure?" as you read many of these items, you might be a powergamer.

If your reaction to your character's death is "I Iron Heart Surge the condition of my own death, bringing myself back to life!" you might be a powergamer.

If your minimum damage is 10 at first level.....

Goliath fighter with nat 18 strength, a large greatsword, and power attack.

Strength: +6 damage
Power Attack: +1 damage
Greatsword: 3d8 damage
Total damage: 3d8+7 (minimum 10, average 19. crit 37)

There, a 1st level character able to take down one that is two levels higher. Without going into other feats.

And using the weakest (IMHO) class in dnd.

If you're talking a natural 18 here, then racially adjusted strength would be 22. That's a +6 modifier, and since two-handers multiply strength-based damage by 1.5, that should give you +9 damage. Not that it matters, but large greatswords do 3d6, not 3d8. Power attack also multiplies by 2 for two-handers. So that should be 3d6 + 9 + 2 = 14 minimum.

However, none of this is actually relevant, because a goliath is automatically a level 2+ character, since there's a +1 level adjustment.

On the other hand, an orc barbarian -- actually a level 1 character -- can do it just fine. 22 strength for +9 damage, greatsword for 2d6, toss in rage if you need to.

If you're doing point buy, though, natural 18s usually aren't worth it, since they cost 16 points. Of course, that bit about 18s not being worth it is from an optimization perspective, so perhaps being able to do 10 damage as a level 1 character is indicative of not being a power gamer.

At thier core, everyone is a powergamer. Some just reject that side of them for creativity. I like a little of both worlds :P

If you play a half giant barbarian psychic warrior, who wields a huge greatsword, can manifest the power expansion, and has the Monkey Grip feat, you might be a power gamer.

A. He plays in my campaign.
B.He is a goliath, not a half giant

If you took one level of a base class from Dragon Magazine to get four exotic weapon proficiencies to maximize your assassin build (which involves sneak attacking with a harpoon) and one of the EWPs was chosen at random because your 2 melee weapons were already selected to maximize your bluff check while dual wielding -- yeah, you might be a powergamer.

Yeah!

....You can create your first level character and all stats for any race, and any class, with racial modifiers, AND figure out the encumbrance, skill points, plus/minus's, starting gold, weapons etc..

Ooh, I'm almost a D&D fanatic. And after only a year or so...just need that pesky encumbrance.
