| ParanoidWarforged09-07-05, 11:59 AM | Inspired by a) the multitude of other 1001 threads, b) the prevalence of printed media (the various newspapers etc.) in Eberron and c) comments regarding the existence of Drizzt and Elminster as popular fictional characters, i thought i'd start a thread to create other items of popular fiction. Novels, plays/masques, serialised and syndicated stories, bardic ballads, comics- what are some of the traditional and popular stories in the world of Eberron? I'd suggest: 1- The Misadventures of Greep, a topical comedy serialised in Sharn magazines, regarding the views and experiences of a loveably grumpy city goblin. |
| Tek09-07-05, 04:08 PM | 2 - The logs of Captain Cheeky, the Awakened Monkey Airship Captain |
| Ricohard_Draconis09-07-05, 04:23 PM | 3. Alarand, Right hand of Galifar - set during the formation of Galifar, has fallen into disfavour during and since the war, but is still considered a classic of unified literature. 4. Kajur; Flight over Stormreach - The story of Kajur goblin adventurer in depths of Xen'drik who desite everything always seems to win the elven maid and save the day. Favoured by the denizens of Lower Sharn due to its impressive pictures and simple storylines. |
| jonthegm09-07-05, 05:05 PM | 5. The Ruins of Madness - A romanticized account of the Xoriat invasion. Notable heros include pre-galifar humans who come to a lot of conclusions that seem similar to the Code of Galifar. 6. Towerfall - A sensational disaster epic that centers around the destruction of Sharn. Originally intended as propaganda, this book was written by an Aundarian national and has recently gained notoriety as a potboiler of the moment in upper-class Sharn. |
| Mekboyjohn09-07-05, 05:32 PM | Warformers- a comic about a group of warforged druids call the automano who came to the material a new sorce of energy, but have to fight the evil forces of the dectiacarna |
| taski09-07-05, 09:49 PM | 8. The Ghost of Eyes - A Mystery novel that involves a Medani inquisitive in Wroat, a haunted house, and the Royal Eyes of Aundair. 9. Reasonable Consequences - A spy novel set in the Last War that tells the tragic romance of a Thranish spy and a Cyran artificer. 10. The Facts and Myths of Magic - A large tome that lists and debunks common exaggerations and misinterpretations of arcane magic in a comical way. 11. Never our Kin - A satirical musical play that explores the role of Warforged in postwar society while also poking fun at Brelish Parlament. 12. Folktales of Karrnath - A treasure trove of Karrnathi stories collected in small villages and thorpes. The stories are often bizarre and always grimm. |
| Kinger09-07-05, 09:54 PM | 13. The Talenta Trio - Popular among children, the Talenta Trio are three halfling brothers that roam Sharn and solve mysteries. They follow the traditional archetypes of Sneaky, Strong, and Smart, and use teamwork to overcome obstacles. Not particularly popular among halflings. Printed as an anthology. 14. The Beholder - Serialized in the Sharn Inquisitive. The Beholder is a masked vigilante that watches over the good citizens of lower Sharn, while maintaining his position as a lesser noble. Has elements of Zorro, Batman, and Robin Hood, as he fights for the less fortunate, is a master swordsman, is depicted as using fear against the frightening, and does it all while looking totally badass. 15. Clunker's Adventures - Children's stories no longer in print. A clumsy and incompetent warforged is booted from the army and wanders Breland having misadventures as he tries to find work. Was once a regular serial in the Sharn Inquisitive. Finally stopped after the Treaty of Thronehold. 16. Bladesongs - Originally from Valenar, the Bladesongs are a collection of stories about heroic elves, usually taking place in Xen'Drik during the elven uprising. The stories now bare little resemblance to their original forms, being twisted and altered to make them more appealing to a wider Khorvaire audience. Some, heaven forbid, actually take place in Khorvaire now. Young Valenar find them amusing, older traditionalists don't, and there is surprising popularity among teenagers of other countries. |
| zambuka09-07-05, 10:09 PM | 2 - The logs of Captain Cheeky, the Awakened Monkey Airship Captain To continue from an earlier thread. SHOW ME THE MONKEY!!! Ahem.. now that is out of my system. 17. 101 unuseless magic items. Details some bizzare magical inventions from the earwax baller to the horseshoe bottle opener. 18. 20 days in Darguun. This is a translation guide to goblin, giving some useful phrases. (Note it is actually quite terrible, it was written by an Aundair Halfling who didn't speak goblin and used dwarf to goblin phrase book as his reference) 19. The little lightning train that could. A childrens story about an anthropomorphised lightning rail that was picked on by the other lightning engines because he was small. |
| jake_lex09-07-05, 10:27 PM | 20. True Adventures of Xen'Drik, which are, of course, greatly exaggerated, lurid accounts of giants 500 feet tall and vicious Drow who attack from nowhere that have very little to do with the stories that "inspired" them. 21. I Married A Changeling: if Eberron has Lifetime Movies, it'll be like it. In this particular one, two women are shocked to find out that their "husbands" are the same person. (I think depictions of Changelings in popular culture are almost universally negative, except for a few that do try to end prejudices, such as...) 22. Inspector Hars: A tough, street-wise Changeling uses his shapeshifting ability to infiltrate evil organizations and bust crime. |
| Darth Syntax09-07-05, 11:57 PM | 23. Without End: a tragedy in five acts by Soren Tierandiel. written about ten years before the end of the war, Without End is set during an endless dawn before an unnamed battle. Five nameless soldiers, each thought to represent the nations of Galifar, sit before a dying fire, waiting for the rising of the sun so that they can go to their deaths. They laugh and joke and tell stories of home, they speak of the war and how best to end it. Death, they conclude, is the best option for dont seem to have any other alternatives. They have been swept along this far into the conflict to they point that all they can remember is how to kill the others. At the end, they draw their knives and kill each other before the sun rises so that they will not have to fight any further. As the sun comes up, the bodies are dragged off by other soldiers, who then return to the stage and sit before the fire, waiting for their own chance at death. 24. The Collected Stories of Perano Sortiliano Zil’Zaraminae. A collection of Short stories by the famed gnomish author. Noted for their elegant prose and the juxtiposition of the mundane and the extradordinary, these stories have become not only classics of literature, but are also beloved by people all across the continent. 25. The Journal of Mielos Farranit Kolenvarun another gnomish work, it chonicles the misadventures of that famous rogue for whom the work is named. It is a ribald and often bawdy work which covers everything from his exploits in Xen' Drik to "that most unpleasant business involving the baker, the two fruit carts and a member of the Blood of Vol." |
| PoeticJustice09-08-05, 12:44 AM | I was thinking of a shameless plug for my beloved Mournland Horrors, 'cuz if I was an Eberronian I'd want constant updates from the Mournland in a search for survivors, but I'll leave it at this... 26) Chaseva ir' Maasat, Boranel's Cyran Queen: It would be a dramatized version of Boranel's early relationship with his first wife, a cyran noble. |
