1001 Minor Spot Checks [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-28-05, 11:46 AM One of the things that I do in my campaign is pass out notes to players who make successful spot checks when others fail. Since this has a tendancy to make those who dont get notes paranoid, and since I love paranoia :D , I thought I would solicit the help of the Eberron community to come up with 1001 minor things that a character might notice with a spot check. These things should be insignificant, have no value or threat, but add to the flavor of the game...and may possibly turned into a plot point later.

I will start it off...

1) You spot a crumpled playbill for a House Phiarlan show that is several months old.

2) You notice a flower growing on the path with beautiful, distinctive markings.

3) The remains of something long dead still litter this area...but what it was, you can't tell.

4) A glint of light catches your eye, and looking closer, you see a small, smooth stone with a polished surface.

5) An insect zooms past you, and catches a snack for itself in mid-flight.

7) In the lower left hand corner of a painting you notice certain (NPC)

8) In (specific ward) you begin to notice a tribal tattoo on every other person

9) In a patch of grass you notice all the blades of grass move away from the same spot as if something happened there, except there is nothing in that spot.

10) An everbright lantern is acting strange, unlike the others in its vesinity this one is flickering.

11) You see two warforges with the exact same symbol on their foreheads having a very heated conversation.

12) A man has "left hand" tattooed on his right and "right hand" on his left hand.

13) The pictoral representaion of the tavern "The Perfect Crown" is cracked and broken (probably suggest relations with the Aurum).

14) (in some lower Dura ward) You notice a single building down an alley that has been carefully taken care of.

15) On (NPC's desk) you see she has stacked a set of coins in a methodical manner.

16) All the glasses in this room are half full.

17) In an otherwise clean home one room is dirty

18) you notice that the dubante that you're talking to has a chip in her fingernail polish

19) You see darkness (and if they try to cast magic missile at the darkness, throw the book at 'em)

20) You spot a small boy running around with a list, apparently trying to collect 1001 ideas for something or other

21) You spot the back of your hand... Hey! that scar's new!

23) A rider is having difficulty controlling his mount (especially interesting for a halfling riding a clawfoot)

24) An NPC you're talking to has a spot of blood on an otherwise clean shirt

25) A random passerby is a changeling--the PC is the only one to notice the changeling drop its disguise for a moment

26) There are more shifters than usual in this district

27) A lyrandar airship flys overhead, mostly obscured by clouds

28) In a building or house there is a small shrine to the Dark Six

29) The dwarf commoner you're talking to is wearing rings of the Aurum

30) A passing dog has markings almost identical to a dragonmark

34) A man adjusting himself.

35) A warforged carrying a small girl on his shoulders.

36) A changeling in a dress store changing her hair to match the dress she is trying on.

37) A goblin mime pretending he is in an invisible box.

37) A shifter child climbing a rope to no where.

38) A small group of children playing ball with a black tentacle protruding from a drain.

39) A woman on an elevator has a tail.

40) Children jumping from a window to a balcony and back.

42) A strange shadow passes over head, far too large to be bird, and definately to organic to be an airship. How odd.
43) You see a man some distance away is eating candy.
44) A group of children a playing tag.
45) There a pile of clean laundry in front of a near by house.

50)A shifter kid crosses the street carrying a syberis shard.
51)in the horizon a cloud forms a perfect circle over the lands of the mournland
52)A warforged bard playing with an odd instrument you've never seen before
53)A kalashtar is following you
54)and old friends of yours is in a backalley talking to a changeling in its genderless form
55)an insect in front of you disapears
56)You see a primitive looking warforged with a strange sign you've never seen before...unless you've gone to xen'drik..

61) a woman's hat floating on an updraft.

64) A rainbow appears between two towers and it looks like people are walking on it.

65) A dew covered spider web glistens in the morning light it almost gives you a spiritual feeling.

66) You see a woman dressing with her window open.

67) A skycoach goes past a hooded woman with fangs looks back at you and licks her lips.

68) You see poem carved in the wall under a window.
Thee I love forever, raven-haired girl with emerald eyes, loveliest of women.
Thou art the rarest flower in the garden in my heart.

69) You see some people and goblins trying to untangle a pair of wagons blocking the road.

70) A warforged is painting in an alley.

73) a young gent dressed i fine clothes drops from far above landing in front in front of an attractive elven girl, after giving her a posy they walk off into the distance

74) a halfling with a house Jorasco Dragonmark is begging in the gutter to your right

75) there in the distance you spy a changeling performing before a crowd of children, dancing between faces and forms, suddenly he meets your gaze goes rigid and begins to runn away.

76) a pair of bugbears being fleeced by a gnomish pedlar in a game of find the Galifar

77) two Arundair apprentices playing Shah-Truces in the street

78) glancing up you notice a Stirge nest

79) A member of the city watch appears to be very interested in what you are doing, as he has been staring in you direction for quite some time.

80) A human male hovers past, riding in some sort of mystical, chairlike device.

81) A body lays openly in the street, but passersby don't seem to notice it.

82) The wall across the way shimmers momentarily, then appears normal.

83) You see a copper crown on the walkway, heads up.

84) A series of hedges nearby appear to be trimmed in the shape of various animals.

89) You notice a disturbance in the air that seem to be following a gnome (that you don't know).

97) Staring out from a grate, a pair of yellow eyes follow a baker as he passes by with his cart.
98) A sign outside the Church of the Sovereign Host says "Early Morning Sermon: Why Bother?"
99) A pair of warforged protestors sit in a local cafe, their signs propped against the table.
100) A clock in a store window reminds you it's time for breakfast/lunch/dinner.

105) you notice that half of the tomatoes at the food shop you're passing, are of a meager quality

106) a light blinds you. it's a metal ornament hang from the top of a nearby church

107) you notice a man hitting a young child out of the corner of your eye

108) you notice that the man that just passed you has a mold on his neck in the shape of king bornel

109) you see a leave falling before your feet, yet there are no trees to be seen

110) as you pass a house you see it beeing scribbled with strange words, and your eye chatches the phrase: 'let me comparte thee to a summers day...'

121) You notice the trees/grass in front of you start to sway towards you like something is moving this way

122) You notice scratch marks in the side of a tree where someone or something was trying to hang on for dear life.

Can you tell I like alittle ravenloft in my ebberon campaigns?

124) Two tribex stare at you from the trees as you pass by.
125) A small, white rabbit with pointed teeth stands outside the entrance to a large cavern about fifty feet away.
126) The remains of an old tent and a burnt out fire are all but hidden behind a nearby tree.
127) The bushes up ahead rustle, then subside.
128) The sun is at the highest point in the sky. It must be lunch time.
129) A dragonseye acorn lies on the ground up ahead.
130) A broken piece of cord, attached to what appears to be some kind of rusty, spring loaded mechanism, lies limp across the road.
131) Someone has carved the words "Jotar + Karilee" into the trunk of a large tree.

136) you see a work crew over an open manhole making bets on who goes first.

137) you see a Pixie dancing around an everbright lantern.

138) you see a card game being played and every player is cheating.

139) you see a man wearing full plate opening a door for some ladies.

140) you see a gnome peering through a magnifying glass with a warforged standing next to him saying �Elementary my dear Watson.�
