Well, I wasn't quite sure whether to put this here or in the Combat and Arms section...anyway, I've been rereading Fred Saberhagen's The Complete Book of Swords, and started to toy with the idea of making a campaign that's centered around twelve such weapons. Now then, to those who've read the book(s) any ideas as to how I could pull this off. I mean, I'm not even really sure how to make the swords in game, well, other than making them major artifact weapons, perhaps bastard swords would be the best choice for them, but as for the individual powers, not really sure how to implement those. Was thinking that perhaps Dragonslicer could be a dragon bane weapon that ignored the natural armor of draconic creatures, but beyond that I'm at a loss.

And then there's the whole issue with the implications that such weapons would pose to the nations of Khorvaire and...well, actually to basically everybody on Eberron.

So far I've decided to start everybody off about three years before the Mourning, so the swords would all be active during the Last War. Just need some help on figuring out how to make it all work.

While I've never read the book in question (so I don't know how true to the feel of the book this would be), I might suggest checking out Weapons of Legacy. I really like that book, and the concept of weapons that actually improve as their wielder improves has worked well in my games in the past.

Besides that, Legacy Items are intended to have rich backgrounds (which could/should be done for all magic items anyhow, but it is intrinsically tied to these items) that make them more than just common swords, while not being completely potentially game killing artifacts that no player should have before 15th level or so.

Saberhagen's Swords are absolutes. I wouldn't give them states. If a person with Dragonslicer faces a dragon, the dragon dies, end of story. Woundhealer heals all wounds, ignore caster level checks. And so on. I'd add one more for the Baker's Dozen, making Woundhealer the 13th.

Saberhagen's gods died to their hubris in creating these weapons (they did it as simply a thing to do to make things more exciting int heir world, and wound up creating their own destruction, since they were a little more physically present than Eberron gods). Whoever creates them (Dragons, outsiders, gods) should suffer similarly for their presumption.

I'd introduce them as brand new, rather than found in crypts or ancient places. Just drop them on the campaign world in various places and that's all, just like Saberhagen's books. No one needs to really know why they exist and who created them. Wham, suddenly the PC's wake up with Coinspinner and they're off!

Actually I was kind of thinking of having them be made by the giants just prior to the dragons wiping them out as they did. I mean, making something like Dragonslicer would probably give the entirety of the dragon race more than reason enough to wipe out the giants. Either that or possibly having them be weapons made by the ancient Raja's for use against coatls and dragons in their ancient conflict, whole thing leading to their downfall in the end. Then again, I could just have them pop up randomly around the world, no rhyme or reason or even the faintest explanation as to who made them or why they were made, they just pop up in random people's hands, from a poor farm boy in the middle of Aundair to a baron in Thrane. Maybe have the swords appear with a note saying the sword's name and mentioning that it has eleven (or maybe twelve) brothers, no mention of it's powers or anything like that though...or maybe I should include that, not sure yet.

I do want to follow along the baker's dozen theme of Eberron, but I'm not sure where to even begin on powers for a thirteenth sword. Considered possibly going with a bit of a Lord of the Rings idea and make the new blade a sort of "Godsword" or a "One Sword to Rule Them All". Giving the new sword all the powers of the others, as well as the power to find any of the others with ease. Or then there's the idea of making a Xoriatslicer, or maybe a Fiendslayer. Anybody have any suggestions for this one?

I notice none of the swords have the ability to control the weather. I'd do Stormcaller, myself. It raises a thunderstorm in 10 rounds of concentration which pelts the area around the wielder with hail and lightning. If the wielder concentrates for too long it starts summoning tornadoes, and those can hit even the wielder.

I could swear someone posted a similar thread about the 12 swords a while back... I wish I could find it right now.
