I think that it should be an arcane leader.

A guy, who boosts the items of his party by triggering prepared infusions on them.

But, I agree. I suspect it'll be like Incarnum: creating temporary magical items with infusions, etc.

Also, since magical items seem to give you new Encounter or Daily abilities, an artificer might be able to play with those new abilities.

For instance, if you have a Warhammer of Ice, that, once per encounter, on a crit, it does something special. The artificer might let you use that ability twice an encounter. The artificer can do this per encounter. He can use it for a per day power, but doing so expends his use of this ability (meaning, if he recharges someone's daily power, he can no longer recharge anyone's encounter powers for the rest of the day).

Sounds about right. They train like wizards for their power, and the majority of their infusions are focused on buffing or repairing warforged.
