Something I have been kicking around today...

What if something very special and unique happened in the Cyre on The Day of Mourning. An event so extraordinary that even if you were faced with it, you wouldn't realize what you were seeing.

What if a spell became sentient.

Imagine for a moment that a minor spell like Obscuring Mist, somehow became self-aware. A being of primal instinct at first, seeking to feed on raw magic and other spells. It rapidly grows as it feeds on the plentiful amount of magic items and spells found in Cyre. Everburning torches, magic potions, the Lightning Rail, all of it is drained by the Living Spell as it expands outward.

What if the dead-gray mists of the Mournlands are a massive sentient spell that for unkown reasons, has stopped at the borders of Cyre?

An intriguing theory :) Still lots of room for intrigue and mystery while making use of magic, I like it. My first question is, how did it become sentient?

G'day all,

It's been awhile since I last looked in on the forum and I must say that this topic is very much along the lines of what I had been thinking myself as I re-re-read the ECSB for the 3rd time.

What I had been tossing round was some form of sentient living spell or disembodied sentience that had gotten jack of the war and decided to stop it via the use of most extreme means, ala nuke the joint! Although not technically a nuke, the combination of spells available to and employed by this sentience would incluede things like Acid Fog, Incendiary Cloud, Greater Dispel Magic, Mordenkainen's Disjunction, Obscuring Mist, Gentle Repose, Slay Living, Searing Light, and the list can go on....

Now I currently have 2 theories on this sentience-

1) The sentience is something mostly akin to a living spell but if a higher order. Not sure if it was made or came to be just yet, but I would treat it as a NN Outsider with a slight neggative energy trait and yet a complete abhorance for war, bloodshed and violence. I know that this stance is contrary to the actions it took, but at the same time the A-Bomb had a similar effect in WW2.

2) The Mournland Sentience is a projection of the will of the Daelkyr which was given a small glimpse into Eberron via the dirty big crack found in the Mournland. Although they did not cause the big bang, the big bang did cause thier prison to fracture slightly and allow these CR20 creatures and masters of pain, suffering and evil to commence thier influence on the world of Eberron again.

Either way I think both could be feasible and play out quite nicely in a campaign. Ideas, thoughts, questions, I would love to hear them.

And as for you Trolls- the sentient living spell gained sentience the same way that the Warforged did... it just did!
