| The Necromancer King04-23-06, 08:31 AM | Well, for all of the incredible response the idea's gotten, I went to the trouble of finding a way to get my first recorded session to the masses. It can be found here (http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3474725). The file is 81 mb, and has over five hours of gaming goodness on it. You should be warned. There's a warning on the download page, but I'm putting one here too: this is just us gaming, so it has not been edited. You'll be getting it all. Foul language, huge leaps in volume whenever everyone's laughing (Wear headphones. Really.), the sound of the dice rolling, people ranting, the whole nine yards. Sometimes someone has an opinion, or starts talking about something they know nothing about (usually me...). If you can't handle those things, this is not a file you're going to appreciate. If you're under 18, its probably a file your parents aren't going to appreciate your listening to. Then again, Mom and Dad might think it's entertaining. Rated M - For mature. The file can be downloaded using Bit Torrents. For those uninitiated into the world of torrents, it basically allows you to download chunks of a file at a time from multiple people; you are also uploading chunks of that same file to people who don't have it. It makes the downloading process much faster. To download the file, you will need a bit-torrent client, which you can find here (http://www.bittornado.com/download.html) . This is only the most basic of bit-torrent clients, though, and I'd suggest you use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php). It's Java based, so it runs more slowly, but file management is a breeze on it. Keep in mind that it's using my own bandwidth to upload this file, so if you can, please keep the torrent running when it's done downloading. It'll save me a ton. Some day, I may even figure out how blogging/podcasting works, and use that magic to post this stuff. ^_^ |
| Lurkalot04-23-06, 02:45 PM | I had a look at it, but the torrent times out connecting to the tracker. The filename says .wav though. Are you seriously offering it as a wav file? No wonder your bandwidth is huge. If you encode it as an .mp3 or even better as a .ogg then the file size will be much smaller with no noticeable drop in quality. Try here (http://www.vorbis.com/software/) for something that will do the job depending on what system you're using. Note to concerned people and those who don't know - The Pirate Bay is legal in the country that it is situated in and it is legal to download files via BitTorrent that aren't legally restricted such as this one. Leaving the torrent flowing on your computer after it's completed downloading means that you're helping to share the bandwidth for others who want it. |
| The Necromancer King04-23-06, 06:17 PM | Thank you. I was actually having some difficulty finding a cost effective (read freeware) program to convert the file; the MP3 player we use to record the files records in wav, and all of the files I found for myself were shareware until they layered on the costs. I'll convert the file, make a new torrent. This is the first torrent I've ever made, so I don't know how to fix a tracker timeout, if one occurs on a regular basis. Any help? |
| Lurkalot04-24-06, 01:29 PM | Thank you. Any help? Pretty much anything you use will output a .wav file to begin with - you're not missing anything. Creating a .ogg or .mp3 or whatever is a two stage process. You should mention what platform you're using (Windows, Mac, Linux) and it may make it easier to point you in the direction of the software you need. But if you've managed to convert the file to an .ogg (Ogg is best) then I'll see what I can do about the .torrent. But if you haven't yet (and I hope I'm not patronising you here), test the encoding on a smaller file first. You don't want to encode 80MB and then realise that the quality sucks. ;) The .torrent? You can have a look here (http://www.dessent.net/btfaq/#maketorrent) or here (http://www.bittorrent.com/guide.myt) for some how-to's. They'll give you more information than I can post here. But, I do have a hunch... After uploading the .torrent file you created, did you begin downloading from it and keep it? I'm guessing the timeout error that I got was because no-one was seeding it. There has to be someone who is seeding the file who has the complete copy. And because you're the first, it has to be you. Basically, you need to start downloading the file yourself by clicking on the torrent in the same way we all will. Because you already have the file, all you'll be doing is sharing it back out. Make sure you download it to the directory you already have it in. Hope this helps (but please - no .wav's). ;) |
| Tek04-25-06, 12:35 AM | I totally want to listen to this. But yeah, you need seeders on that torrent, heh. And an .ogg would be better compressed. |
| The Necromancer King04-25-06, 08:42 PM | Well, it took two hours to encode, but it's now an OGG Vorbis file. Quality is pretty good; a few of the problems with sudden volume shifts (laughing) are lessened, and it's a bit harder to hear the quieter members of my group, but overall it's quite nice. So now onto how you guys want this delivered to your doorstep. Is there someone with an RSS feed that I can upload it to, and you'll make a podcast thingy out of it? Should I upload it to Lurkalot and have him make a torrent? Anyone got a website whose willing to host a 327 MB media file? Let me know. |
| Tek04-26-06, 03:46 AM | Whoa. It went from 81 mb to 327 mb? heh. Send me a private message with some kind of instant messenger, we'll transfer it across that, and I'll convert the 81 mb wave into a smaller mp3, then we'll work on hosting that file. |
| Lurkalot04-26-06, 05:00 PM | Sorry - I hope you don't take that as offensive, but it is funny when a file comes out of compression four times the size that it went in. How in the world did you manage that? ;) I could probably host it for you, but as Tek has volunteered, I'll leave it to him. Bit torrent will be better than straight hosting though, as we don't know how many lurkers are out there waiting for this. What is your setup? If you tell us what you're using it might make it easier to work out what went wrong. -K. |
| Charles Phipps04-26-06, 05:47 PM | I look forward to what it turns out to be. |
| The Necromancer King04-27-06, 12:11 AM | Well, I'm no audio expert, and my knowledge of file-types and compressions is actually LESS than my knowledge base of brain surgery (I'm a dishwasher, to put that into context). I was having a problem getting converters to work on the file. Whenever I tried, the converters told me the wav file was broken. I tried with both wav files, and neither worked. So I tried Adobe Audition, which read the wav file just fine, and I exported it into an OGG file. And I ended up getting a bigger file than I started with. I'm running Windows XP on a run-of-the-middle, home-built machine. If that helps anything. I sent Tek a private message with my e-mail address so I can send him the wav file, but no response as of this writing. |
| Tek04-27-06, 10:57 PM | Sorry, was a bit busy yesterday. Check your PMs. |
| The Necromancer King04-28-06, 09:09 AM | Well, folks. It's all in Tek's capable hands now. If there's a call for it, I'll see about sending in the second session too. We'll be recording our session every Saturday (more for my own learning purposes than anything), so if you think they're worth listening to, shout out and let me know. |
| DMDaddy04-29-06, 03:05 AM | What's the status on the recording??? I'm interested in hearing how other DMs play 3.5. |
| The Necromancer King05-02-06, 10:02 PM | So. Um. Yeah. I'm rather wondering after the status of the recording myself. I uploaded it some time last week, and haven't heard back from Tek since. If he's still kicking around, I'd love to hear SOMETHING from him. Our most recent session (our third recorded) turned into a Character Creation Session because one of our key players left the group (silly real life), and our current game was usually fun more for its slightly crazy diversions than the game itself. So if I can find a reliable way to get these files to someone willing to put them up on a regular basis, you might be able to listen to a whole campaign from beginning to end. |
| Mind Flayer Monk05-03-06, 11:35 PM | Go with Razorlame and encode at like 8-20k you should be able to get it down to 10-20mb (5 hours is 5 hours). You can shrink it further by editing the sound quality with something like Goldwave. and also, thank you for the contribution to the gaming community! |
| Lurkalot05-04-06, 02:54 PM | I can concievably host this for you if need be. Email me if you're interested and I'll see about it. First off, do you have a compressed version (e.g. Ogg file) or do you only have the 81 MB .wav original. I could compress it if you want, but it will be easier for you to transfer to me a compressed version. Note, I reserve the right to stop hosting it at some point, but I can get you up for an initial run. -K. |
| Decree Of Boredom05-04-06, 08:44 PM | There's a very nice open source sound editor called Audacity that will allow you to save files as .ogg's. You can probably find it on Sourceforge. |
| Lurkalot05-06-06, 02:44 AM | Audacity is great but it's more than you need just to encode a .wav file. If you open an 81MB .wav in Audacity, it's going to try and handle the whole file at once. Better just to use a straight encoder which will directly turn the .wav into an .ogg. Am still waiting for a reply. If either NK or Tek want to contact me by email, we can arrange to transfer the file (ideally compressed but can handle it otherwise) and I'll host it on my site. |
