I'm running an Online game of Eberron starting each of the players off in their own solo adventure, but keeping all the stories connected to the big plot line I have running. Now, I'm not getting into the big picture because some of my players might read this, and that would spoil the fun.

But, I did want to see if anyone else has tried this approach:

One of the players who requested to join, ended up not knowing anything about Eberron. In fact, mistaking it for an off shoot of FR(Tsk tsk, I know) But he still wanted to play in the game, becaue he liked the idea of a solo game, and wanted to learn about the setting. So, I thought, "What if this guy originated on another continent that hasn't been discovered by the Khorvairians. Having joined in a large scale exploration trip concisting of several ships(Like Lhazaar leaving Sarlona) his ship gets damaged out at see by a large storm. After drifting in the ocean with no sails for several weeks, the ship is ravaged by another storm, this one accompanied by a Saughin war parties that over run the ship. Next thing he knows, he wakes up on the shores of Khorvaire(Shadow Marshes) and must find his way in this new strange land.

I put forth the idea to other players, and ended up with 3 players taking this rute, though only two of them have actually started. two of hem are starting in the Shadow Marshes, and one might start somewhere else.

Anybody else every try something like this?

Not exactly what you're asking, but here's what i did when i got into eberron:

The first character I played was a halfling barbarian who had never left the Talenta Plains. The "Savage" character is really easy to play if you don't know the setting. An Orc/Half-Orc from the Shadow Marches/Demon Wastes, a Halfling from the Talenta Plains, anything really from the Eldeen Reaches. "These city people are confusing" is a lot easier to wrap your mind around then the tense political situation between Karrnath and Thrane.

How about getting your player to be one of the very last Warforged to come out of the Creation Forges? It/he/she would come into the wider world with knowledge of their profession, how to fight, a set of skills, maybe some imprinted rote knowledge (Wroat is the capital of Breland, Fairhaven is the capital of Aundair, blahblahblah...), but no actual experience of the wider world. You immediately expose him to the power of the Dragonmarked houses, and the various interest groups that are connected to them. Agents of the Lord of Blades will try to incite his character into joining the fanatical cult, and feel the sting of anti-warforged sentiments.

Perhaps as one of the last to emerge from the Creation Forge, he is marked by the Prophecy... and everyone else interested in manipulating the mystical roadmap to the future, including the Chamber, the Lords of Dust, the Undying Court, and various minor players. Maybe he was made with something hidden inside, and he desperately needs to find out what before the Emerald Claw catches up and disembowls him for it! A Cult of the Dragon Below has got it into their mad minds that Warforged make great bondfires so that they can climb the smoke into the sky and hurl the stars down at Eberron! It's a Warforged murder spree!

The possibilities are limitless, if you manipulate the mythology of Eberron enough.

He could easily be a Seren or some other human living on the shores of Argonessen under the Dragon's good graces. Sailed out exploring and got lost as you said.
