| Nerdicus04-13-07, 12:27 PM | Mounring Shards: Dragon shards found only in the destruction of the Mounrlands. These deep black shards with dead grey mists that swirl inside of them are new and strange. No one as of yet has learned what prupose they serve, but ne thing is for certain; any dragon marked person near them begins to find that their mark is not behiaving in the way they have learned to expect. In my campaign these dragon shards are going to be strange and mysterious. No one will know what they do, but everyone of the dragon marked houses and others will wnat them. Any thoughts? |
| Lucas_Garczewski04-13-07, 12:59 PM | An interesting idea, even if it strays very far from canon and won't be usable in many campaigns. I'll dive further into this concept... Each of the three standard types of dragonshards is tied to a specific progenitor wyrm. However, if I am not mistaken, the books do not say Eberron, Khyber and Siberys were the only progenitor wyrms, they were just the most powerful. So, if a PC in the know stumbles upon a new type of shard, he/she should start to wonder whether this is the manifestation of a fourth great dragon... You could make that dragon a female, one who watched with Sorrow as the Three battled and cried, thus creating the seas and oceans of Eberron. Now... If the PCs dig *really* deep, they could find evidence of these Sorrow dragonshards appearing after each cataclysmic event in history (e.g. the fall of the giants). Hope this is useful. :) |

I like the idea of a Mourning Shard because it can be used as something that characters will never really understand, or something that they can learn all about, depending on how the DM wants to use it. But I like the idea of the Hidden Prgenitor Wyrms idea.... I had another idea that it could be tied into the creation forges and what they draw apon to give life they way they do. THe mourning was the result of a strange creation schema pattern that was being tried that released a huge power flux that destroyed Cyre. And now that force is in the Mourning roaming as a sentient force of flesh warping doom that is trying understand what it is and what it is doing. Not realizing that when it focusses on a creature or thing he warps it and makes it anew in his own way. Afraid and angry for its exsistance it spreads like a sentient fungus across the mourning turning everything it comes across into something new and horrible. The new Dragon shards a strange side effect of its presence. Or something. |
| Bluebrush04-13-07, 02:17 PM | I don't know if I like the idea of another kind of dragonshard, but I can explain it to myself as shards warped by the power of the mourning. As for ideas: -Mourning shards can be used to make items for harming the marked. Bane weapons that work on dragonmarked, power components for spells that harm the marked, cursed Dragonmark Focus items that steal or pervert dragonmark powers. -The prescence of mourning shards brings out the power of marks in dangerous ways. Sometimes they manifest to the detriment of the bearer (Such as using overland flight to take you a mile into the air and drop you) sometimes they cause living spells to flow straight from your body. Some have been known to produce a creature similar to a living dragonmark which immediately attacks it's producer. -Mourning Shards trap souls within them. Unethical artificers find they can make superior skill-enhancing items out of these shards. |

Them sucking up huge amounts of magical energy before disintegrating would be part of the way Eberron heals itself from blights like the Mourning. A druid might point to them as proof that the world is just one large organism with individuals working as part of the whole. Sorry, it's a bit of a rough idea for the moment. |

I agree with Creature_Mastermind. I think this idea's awesome. This could explain the lack of healing in the Mournlands. Perhaps something about the land in general and the Mourning Shards specifically draws any and all healing spells away from it's intended target in order to heal the wound created by whatever caused the Mourning. One spell isn't going to do much, but over time, as more and more adventurers pass through, the mist may begin to abate (I'm talking millenia barring something extraordinary). Lay on Hands and Goodberry wouldn't be affected because they are a transfer of blessed life energy and an enchanted food item respectively. |
| goblin_pride04-14-07, 10:40 AM | I was thinking more along the lines that when the ground heaves and cracks it exposes these shards that absorb any kind of magical energy they come into contact with and then disintegrate, destroying the shard and dissipating the magic. It'd create little eddies and pockets of magic-dead areas and the gray vapor from them could partially explain the mists themselves as magical energy that's rendered inert but not yet completely reclaimed. Once the Mournland heals itself the shards might not ever appear again, but as long as the effects linger healing magics will trigger the creation of the shards in the skin of Eberron herself (himself?). Still a bit rough around the edges as far as ideas go, but it might be workable with a bit more thought and alot more polish. |
| Romulus LoneWolf04-15-07, 07:43 PM | How about making corrupted versions of the three common Dragonshards, a result of local Dragonshard Items being corrupted by the Mournining? |
| Cifer04-16-07, 09:23 AM | You might add to this that shards just like them were found during older disasters (dragons vs. fiends, dragons vs. giants and hobgobs/orcs vs. Xoriat). Sounds a little like Final Fantasy VII, which makes the next plot twist a little predictable: What if someone (let's call him the LoBster) had the idea to send something along with the magic that is poured into the shards? Something virulent, that would allow him to control Eberron himself? Of course, he'd need some experts in the draconic prophecy and probably some cataclysm mages and wizards well-versed in developing new spells. |
