The world of Khorvaire is changing and the Dragon’s of Argonnessen witness the unfolding of the Prophecy. When Lord Tarkanan united the Aberrant Marks in Sharaat the Dragons of Argonnessen witnessed the unfolding of a vital part of the Prophecy. Lord Tarkanan had developed a very unique mark, in that it was purely of destructive prowess. The Dragon’s of Argonnessen watched as he organized the aberrant of the world and took control of Sharaat. In his bid for power and rule, he arrogantly destroyed Sharaat instead of submitting. The piece of the Prophecy read as follows:

“When the one of promise rises amongst his peers
Becomes like a king and preaches anew
The war will begin and the city of long will crumble.
The new war of a century will arise
A new race will form, from the creation before
The cries of the land will be created
From the calm, the storm forms
The calm of a treaty, not long foreseen
Marks appear and the war has begun
It is not long before the new become one.”

Sharn Inquisitive
The appearances of the fabled Mutated marks have been sighted in areas near the Mournlands and in dingy areas of Sharn. A true dragonmark has been sighted, but the one who activated it has not been discovered. Inquisitives hired by the Dragonmarked Houses have been dispatched, but no other information has been given. It seems that organizations such as the Silver Flame view these new marks as a threat as well. Speaking to a representative of the Silver Flame, Aren D’Alene, he quoted:
“These new Aberrant Marks are a threat to us all. People with Aberrant marks are not that big of a threat, but from reports of these so called, “Mutated Marks” the power they wield rivals even the most adept Wizard and Clerics. These Aberrant Marks have to come from Khyber itself. The Church is also conducting an investigation into this so called, 'True Aberrant Mark'."
More information will be provided as it is released.

Aberrant Marks: The Surviving Thirteen, as they have began to be known as, are what have survived the Aberrant purge during the War of the Mark. These known powers have been catelogued by the Dragonmarked Houses and even private organizations. New aberrant marks can appear, but these are the most known.

*******When a person picks up an improved version (feat) they lose the ability they had with the previous aberrant feat. For instance if you have the Aberrant Mark and you pick up (manifest) a Mutated Mark, you lose Cause Fear but gain access to Scare.*******

-Aberrant Mark
Dragonmarked Race
Manifest an aberrant dragonmark spell-like ability.
You may be seen as tainted.

-Mutated Mark
Aberrant Mark, 10 ranks in two skills
Develop a mutated aberrant mark. Lose old spell-like ability, but gain a mutated new one.
You may be targeted and persecuted if your Mutated Mark becomes known. You can no longer be lawful good.

-True Aberrant
Mutated Mark, 13 ranks in any two skills
Develop a True Aberrant mark. Lose old spell-like ability, but gain the true form of the aberrant mark.
You will be hunted down by members of Dragonmarked houses. You will be seen as a threat to all the houses. You're type becomes Abberation and you gain the augmented subtype of your former type. For example a Human is a Humanoid with the Human subtype. If a Human gains a True Abberant Mark, he is now an Abberation (Augmented Humanoid). Your alignment automatically shifts to chaotic (good, neutral or evil.) You are now, technically an Aberration (affected by a Ranger's Favored Enemy, Greensinger Special Abilities, etc.) but do not gain Darkvision.

Your caster level for your Aberrant, Mutated or True mark is 1/2 your character level. You can pick up feats to increase this caster level.

*******I understand that Pp. 47 of the ECS says that you cannot improve this mark in any way. In effect you cannot improve the "Aberrant Mark". When you pick up higher "Aberrant Feats" you lose the use of the "Aberrant Mark" and gain the use of the new mark. Feats will be created for these new marks.*******

This is just one part of a project I am doing to flesh out the aberrants. I am also creating a Aberrant Prestige Class which I will post soon. Thanks alot for helpin guys!

The above "tables" were done in Microsoft Word, but the Forums would not let me post them, so I had to do a mock up.

This project is an Eberron Complete Project and is open sourced for additional content and ideas. If you have any ideas on how to improve this please email me at chazhall1987@gmail.com. Chaz Hall- Guide D’Jorasco.

I think the next best part of it is to explain what it really means to be abberant and also if there's a specific result from crossbreeding houses' marks.

It's certainly the case that the marks held by Lord Tarkanan and the Lady of the Plague were far more powerful than the aberrant marks seen today. This is a subject that I have done work on myself, and one that will be addressed officially in time. Until then, I hesitate to comment on other interpretations; I'd rather let you explore your own ideas, which you may ultimately decide are better than mine.

But bear in mind that Tarkanan essentially destroyed Sharaat with a seismic disaster, while the Lady of the Plague unleashed vermin and disease. So despite the magic number 13, the aberrant powers may not all be tied to the modern powers listed in the ECS.

Well the ECS clearly distinguishes Mixed Marks and Aberrants Marks. So Mixed Marks are something totally different. Is there anyone who could comment on this? My friend and I are trying to figure out if Mixed marks would contain different abilities and such.

Where is The Lady of the Plague mentioned??

I just have some mechanical corrections for your "Ture Abberant Mark" feat.

First, "Abberation" is not a subtype, it is a type.
Also, when you say "You are now technically an Abberation", that should be changed to the following:

"You're type becomes Abberation and you gain the augmented subtype of your former type. For example a Human is a Humanoid with the Human subtype. If a Human gains a True Abberant Mark, he is now an Abberation (Augmented Humanoid)."

Feel free to use another example if you wish. And you're correct on specifying the lack of darkvision, so keep that. You should also include the standard line that reads something like: "Among other things, this means they are not affected by spells and effects that specifically target humanoids, such as charm person."

Also, this is just my personal taste, but I think the True mark of Inflict Critical Wounds is a bit.. weak. I would go with Mass Inflict Light instead.

Awesome! Thanks alot. Those choices were off the top of my head. Mass Inflict Light actually might be very good. And I like your statment about Aberration, I will change it now! :-)

Thanks for the reply Keith! I understood Tarkanan using a seismic disaster (Earthquake empowered somehow?) and the Lady of the Plague sending vermin and disease (Some type of Swarm?). I am working on a Prestige Class called, "The Heir of Khyber". In my campaign there will be a lot involved in with Aberrant Marks. The Heir of Khyber is the opposite to the Heir of Siberys. In a way I am interpreting the Aberrant Marks v.s. the Dragonmarks to be the epic and continued battle of Khyber and Siberys. My players read these boards so I will not delve further into the matter. The way those powers Tarkanan and the Lady of the Plague are explained in my campaign are that they were Heirs of Khyber and had access to the higher level "True Aberrant Marks".

Mixed marks are a subset of aberrant marks. When and aberrant mark results from two dragonmarks heirs of different houses having a child, that's a mixed mark. But as they are a subset, as things stand they are supposed to use the standard rules for aberrant marks: it's just a question of origin.

The Sharn sourcebook - The War of the Mark section, I believe.
