| Sturm Jaeger02-01-05, 09:09 PM | Okay, from what I have gathered so far, many of the aberrations in existances were made from existing creatures by the daelkyr. So far, i am aware of.... Dolgunt = hobgoblin Dolgrim = goblin Choker = halfling Chuul = gnome What are some others? I have a few guesses... Driders = elves (or drow?) Ettercaps = ogres Gibbering mouthers = oozes Skum = humans |
| DwelleroftheDeep02-01-05, 09:14 PM | Kill me if you will, but I believe that Elan=human |
| greatfrito02-01-05, 10:11 PM | Well, I think skum are a better bet there, as mant people don't use the psionic races in Eberron (like my group). As far as I can tell, Mindflayers use human host bodies at first too, and half-illithids can be anything humanoid (stupid half-illithid lizardfolk mini... who's ever gonna use that? I mean, really?). |
| Gurv02-01-05, 10:24 PM | Well, I think skum are a better bet there, as mant people don't use the psionic races in Eberron (like my group). If you've banned psionics, I want to hear the rest of the joke. I think that skum are classically created from humans by aboleth, not by the daelkyr. Although it makes sense that the aboleth learned this from the daelkyr, thus making it an academic difference. Beholders are not mentioned as being native to Xoriat, but as a creation of the daelkyr. Although he didn't say what they started as, Keith has mentioned "Belashyrra, the Lord of Eyes, the Daelkyr who is said to have created the first beholders;" in the past. |
| Edymnion02-01-05, 10:41 PM | Kill me if you will, but I believe that Elan=humanNah, I've got an Eberron Elan character. I explained it using the "Kalashtar are using willing humans as living prisons for Dreaming Dark quori spirits". They are aberrations because they have a wholey unnatural prison within themselves to hold the evil spirit in check. They aren't affected by the "_______ Person" spells because they can tap into that spirit for the strength to resist them. But, as aberrations, things that target the spirit/prison will still knock them for a loop. That, and its more fun when your aberration character runs into a a sect of Gatekeepers :D |

Keith said in the the original "Ask Keith Baker thread" that although Beholders were created by the Daelkyr, they are also "the eyes of Xoriat". I'll find that post once search is up again, its not to long before the post mentioning Belashyrra. |
| Sharn Inquisitor02-02-05, 02:06 PM | I had never really thought to dig down into the other "origin" races for the daelkyr aberrations. Thanks for the insight. |
| Altaris02-03-05, 09:29 AM | Has there been a definitive statement as to which Aberrations recieve the DR/byeshk and which do not? Or are people mostly house ruling this? Oh, and has anyone experimented with the symbionts yet for NPCs? The living breast plate is too powerful at only a +1 CR. |
| Gurv02-03-05, 09:38 AM | Oh, and has anyone experimented with the symbionts yet for NPCs? The living breast plate is too powerful at only a +1 CR. That would depend on what the CR of the creature you are putting it on is. A CR 1 bad guy wearing a living breastplate would be more than CR 2. But I'm not so sure that a CR 10 bad guy wearing it would be CR 11. In the first case, he would be getting a lot. In the second case, he would likely be giving up other armor and attendant enchantments; at best the living breastplate would be equal to what he might have anyway. They really should have made a sliding CR adjustment based on the level of the creature wearing it, but I suppose space concerns made it a small priority. I was thinking that only the creatures actually from Xoriat would have damage reduction byshek, for the most part. Most of the abberations from this world would not. |
| Sharn Inquisitor02-03-05, 10:36 AM | Dolgaunts (hobgoblins) and Dolgrims (2 goblins) aren't originally from Xoriat and they receive byeshk damage reduction. I was planning to add byeshk damage reduction to any aberrations (like beholders) that I'm sure are originated by the daelkyr. Obviously, some aberrations occur as a result of other circumstances, like the Mournlands' twisted magic and don't deserve the DR. |
| polt02-03-05, 10:49 AM | Well, the Daelkyr could change one race into many others. Humans could be both mindflayers, scum AND elans. |
| Brastan02-03-05, 11:06 AM | Humans don't factor in as much. I don't think there that many on Korriaver when the Daelkyr showed up. Dwarves = Scum? Elves = Mindflayers? This may not be an exact match but its something different. On second thought it would be best if the Scum were a creation of the Aboleth. The Daelkyr made some nasty creatures but some there creations also enjoyed twisting life. Aboleths and Mindflayers come immediately to mind. Elves = Driders It doesn't matter if they were Elves or Drow. Drider are a deistically different creature. |
| Nived02-03-05, 02:08 PM | I thought Illithids came with them from the planes... |
| Sturm Jaeger02-03-05, 04:48 PM | I thought Illithids came with them from the planes... You're right, they did. Page 305 of ECS: "The sinister illithids are natives of the plane of Xoriat." So mind flayers were not mutated from an existing Eberron creature. |
| KP9102-03-05, 10:54 PM | Well The daelkyr still made the mind flayers, nothing in eberron says that the daelkyr didn't take humans to their plane as slaves. Although I think there might be something like leeches added for the brain sucking ability. Aboleth=Dire Sharks? |
| Sturm Jaeger02-03-05, 11:57 PM | Well The daelkyr still made the mind flayers, nothing in eberron says that the daelkyr didn't take humans to their plane as slaves. Nothing says they did either. Although I think there might be something like leeches added for the brain sucking ability. Um, okay... Aboleth=Dire Sharks? Maybe. It's a logical choice, though the Daelkyr are anything but logical. |
| Flame_Drake02-04-05, 12:38 AM | Well The daelkyr still made the mind flayers, nothing in eberron says that the daelkyr didn't take humans to their plane as slaves. I do believe that Hellcow did say in the "Ask Keith Baker" thread that the Illithids were created from the Gith, although where the Gith came from is still open to debate (although he did hint that they weren't from Eberron). Again, I need the search function to find the post, I just don't have the kind of time I'd need to find it manually in that beast of a thread. |

This way of thinking of Elan says to me that Naruto could be represented by one of these spirit prison elan things! Except Kyuubi (9 tailed kitsune) would be the thing held rather than a Quori sprit, only problem is that Naruto sleeps and seem to have some sort of fast healing. Anyway, about abberition races, I can't wait for Lords of Madness! That will have such great stuff I am sure for a Daelkyr focused game! XD |
| Horathgar02-04-05, 06:49 AM | Definately a line of reasoning I have followed in thinking about hooks and ideas for the Daelkyr. They probably didn't stop with the predictable ever present abberations that are in the ECS. However i do think that the Illithid are already brought up in the ECS under the planes section. Gith also however make some sense as well. However being a horrid leap from the true nature of Illithid, at least to me, they've always seemed something on the same nature as deepspawn, gibbering mouther, aboleth, and to some extent the beholder. Being mostly based on something loosely from an HP Lovecraft novel. However the Eberron setting seems to me to be an excellent mix of preexisting melded with the new. Its all how your DM wants to play it in the end. -Rath |
| Gez02-04-05, 07:49 AM | Dolgaunt = hobgoblinYep! Dolgrim = goblinTrue also. Choker = halflingDon't know where you saw that, but seems reasonnable. Chuul = gnome :OMG! |

Again, I need the search function to find the post, I just don't have the kind of time I'd need to find it manually in that beast of a thread. Yeah, I did find a post by Keith in the FAQ that hinted at Gith being the ancient race which once inhabited Eberron. It might be that the Gith are the original creators of Warforged, since Warforged items predate the Age of Giants. I've been giving most Abberations the DR as well, much like Dolgrim and 'Gaunts. |
| drogg02-04-05, 01:28 PM | Kaorti = elves, though I suppose that's sort of explicit in the Fiend Folio. |
| Sturm Jaeger02-04-05, 02:42 PM | Yep! True also. Don't know where you saw that, but seems reasonnable. :OMG! Choker and Chuul were pulled from stuff Hellcow said here on the boards, in the AKB thread. |
| Kryptonian Scion02-04-05, 02:59 PM | Yeah, I did find a post by Keith in the FAQ that hinted at Gith being the ancient race which once inhabited Eberron. Actually, I think the idea was the the daelkyr have destroyed other worlds in the past, and the gith were inhabitants of one of those worlds - now displaced to the astral plane. The idea that illithids may be gith that were mutated by the daelkyr was part of that theory, and one that I have fully subscribed to for my own campaign. |
| GoodGuy8902-04-05, 03:49 PM | Chuul = gnome ...righ...t Gnome: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG131.jpg Chuul: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG35b.jpg The likeness is striking! :p |

That's what Hellcow said. And nobody said the aberration has to look anything like the original creature. |

Very nifty idea. I may use it too. Though, I still like the idea of Gith being the ancient race on Eberron. |
| SirLoin02-04-05, 09:08 PM | Bill Cosby = Black Pudding |
| Ohtar Turinson02-04-05, 10:24 PM | What says that they made only one abberation from each normal, nonabberation race? It doesn't seem like the Daelkyr present a unified front, being insane and all... |

| Ectoplasmoid02-05-05, 02:50 PM | This is sort of off-topic, but I just finished the story Call of Cthulhu, and I have some great inspiration for when I want to include the Cult of the Dragon below. See my sig. Back on topic, I think that Kieth was joking when he said that chuul are actually 5 gnomes fused together and encased in a shell. Then again- "Anything is possible with Cthu-I mean Daelkyr!" |
| Hammerhead02-05-05, 04:48 PM | Quaraphon would be Centaurs obviously. What are ropers made from? |
| SirLoin02-05-05, 04:55 PM | Quaraphon would be Centaurs obviously. What are ropers made from? Rope? |
| Spirit_Golem02-05-05, 05:14 PM | What says that they made only one abberation from each normal, nonabberation race? It doesn't seem like the Daelkyr present a unified front, being insane and all... Personally, I don't believe that the Daelkyr are insane, just that their reasoning is beyond the mortal mind. For instance, in a typical fantasy world, elves live so long that they have an unusually long-term view of existance; the Daelkyr are similar in this respect. |
| Sturm Jaeger02-05-05, 06:11 PM | Here's a new idea on this subject: ECS says illithids came with the Daelkyr from Xoriat. If so, then they would have been outsiders, like the daelkyr themselves. But they are aberrations. Here are some thoughts I have on this: 1) It was an oversight by developers. 2) Mind flayers were in fact outsiders when they first arrived. But thousands of years in Khyber, generations of these monsters living and dying down there, they slowly evolved into aberrations, losing their outsider status. The daelkyr being immortal, have never changed and remain outsiders. 3) The progenitors of the illithids were from Eberron, taken by the daelkyr to Xoriat during early explorations and transformed into the aberrations they are today. When the daelkyr invaded full force, their new pets came with them. |
| SirLoin02-06-05, 11:36 AM | They do not fit the bill as outsiders by definition in the monster manual glossary. If they were to become that some modification would have to be made to their CR etc.. as well as how they are portrayed. It would also kinda eliminated the dreaded mind eater thing since outsiders do not eat, drink, or breathe. I like the concept of the Daelkyr capturing creatures from different planes and then molding them into twisted fighting tools of their design. |

They would have had to evolve to survive in Eberron, as with successive generations the illithids lost their connection to Xoriat. |
| Takasi02-06-05, 01:57 PM | I think we're being too logical in our groupings. As statted in the ECS, dolgaunts come from hobgoblins and dolgrims from goblins. However, there's no reason why the Daelkyr couldn't have created dolgaunt-like creatures from goblins and dolgrim-like aberrations from hobgoblins. Or elves or griffons or even dragons for that matter. |
| Ohtar Turinson02-06-05, 10:58 PM | Personally, I don't believe that the Daelkyr are insane, just that their reasoning is beyond the mortal mind. For instance, in a typical fantasy world, elves live so long that they have an unusually long-term view of existance; the Daelkyr are similar in this respect. I meant insane as in the Demented (planescape reference to the Baernaloth). Not so much "Want some Cheesecake? It's made with souls. And mealworms. Woah! Look at the newts... mmm... newts..." (slaadi) crazy, but more a weird, creative mindset that's at odds with... creation as it stands. After all, what is madness but an alternate way of looking at things? Reasoning too drastically different would appear crazy to you if it was coming from some guy on the street, no? |
| Altaris02-07-05, 08:18 AM | I don't have my ECS book on hand at the moment, but I do believe that Illithid are considered outsiders (native) within Eberron. However, their only stat modification is the inclusion on DR 5/byeshk. |
| Sharn Inquisitor02-07-05, 11:47 AM | athach = hill giant I read somewhere, I think a Dragonshards that discusses the various descriptors for outsiders, natives, etc. Things that have come to Eberron and have been there for a long time like the mind flayers of Xoriat are considered to be natives. Their argument is that status changes. |
