Howdy

since I was told, that an action point only stabilizes one on current hit point totals (so no more hp losing next round), I thought about my first interpretation.

I thought for 4 action pints and in a climatic battle (not in the brawl at the inn, or the ambush of some bandits, or a hungry animal) my player can "stabilize" at their maximum hit points. This would be the super-hero-comic or movie-hero effect, where the hero stands up on last time and defeats his adversary, because if he will not, all will be lost.

what do you think?

Sounds too powerful. I don't recall if Eberron does this, but I know I've seen rules for using action points to Emulate Feats. How about Emulate Feat: Diehard. That catches the cimeatic heroics your'e looking for without overpowering the game.

I think that although it might be a bit powerful, it adds a lot of drama to the game. The moment when the hero rises, despite his fatal wounds, to defeat the villain and save his friends at the cost of his life is very much a part of the style in which Eberron is forged. And as such I say; Go for it.
I would allow him to continue fighting, but loosing 1 hp each round, and have him make a Fort save (DC 10 + rounds fighting like this) in order not to fall down dead, until the battle is over, at which time the character falls to the ground, and dies (possibly saying a few last words).

I would say it is -way- too powerfull.

But using 2-4 actions points to bring you up from negative to 1 hp would do better.

"I would say it is -way- too powerfull."

Even if it means he dies doing it?

Who said anything about him dying?

I'll admit it was kinda hard to interperet exactly what he meant- but it sounded to me that the hero gets all his HP back (something about "Maximum Hit Points" I just don't understand).

That's how I interpreted it, hero lies on negative hp and with some action points he gets heal casted at him... a wee bit too powerfull in my opinion.

How about this: The stabilised character spends a minimum of two to a maximum of four Action Points. For each point, he rolls a d6 as standard (or takes the highest of multiple rolls at higher level, or uses d8s if he has the Action Boost feat). He receives the total of these rolls as temporary hit points, which last for 1 minute per character level (as with the Aid spell).

That satisfies the concept of the hero staggering up for just one last bout of fighting, and includes the serious possibility that in the process, he'll be wounded to the point where he could die once the effect wears off - which is suitably dramatic.

MarkB, I quite like your idea - it's dramatic but stops short of the PCs becoming invincible and rising from the dead merely by spending APs. The time limit adds a certain urgency to the proceedings, which (as you pointed out) is quite dramatic. It's almost cinematic, thinking of a hero taking a near-fatal hit and summoning enough strength to crawl to cover and drink a potion of cure critical wounds, or firing his crossbow, or performing some other suitable deed (up to and including a snappy exit line, or opening up a can of monk beatdown on the villain's ass)!
Anyway, nice balance between power and dramatic possiblity. I might make a note of this for future (ab)use myself...

Sounds like a very good solution to me.

spend 2 action points to gain the use of the diehard feat. and every other action afterward would be a splendid time to use the rest of the action pool to boost chances of hitting the opponent, saving against attacks, etc..

Is there any rules somewhere (d20 modern etc.) that has rules regarding Action points and using feats that you do not have?
