Hey there. i am about to start a campaign in eberron with my mates who have been playing FR for 2,5 years.

The thing is that we dont actually use XP in our game. we simply play and when the GM thinks its about time we all gain a level. (yes there is some issues with crafting and some spells but we make it work okay)

This type of gameplay has work perfectly for us but that is not the question.

Now i wanna play in Eberron where action points gets replenished every level and that tranfers very poorly to our style.

But i got this idea that i think could work. The accumulates 2 actionpoints per week ingame with the same max as the rules say. I believe that should give them the enough action point to use over the course of the levels without them bathing in AP's.

What do you guys think??? Could you see your self using this system for the action points??

I think the Savage Worlds take on it works better... 3 action dice per SESSION, +1 or +2 if you take certain Edges (equivalent of feats), -1 if you take a particular hindrance (a flaw; UA).

That is actually not a bad idea. with a per session pool. The thing i thought about with the per ingame week is that the official system allows players to burn alot of action points on an important fight. my per week system would allow the players to "save them" for something important but then be without them for that much longer.

I like the per session system idea but i kinda believe mine will feel somehow closer to the official system.

But does it???? :)

Well you usually get 5+1/2 level AP per level. I say just make it 1/2 level AP per session. Heroic Spirit would only give you +1 or +2 AP per session, not 3 (that'd be overpowering in contrast with other characters.)

Unless you mean that you just go for months and months without gaining a level, whats differant? You get so many AP per level. You don't really know when you'll level up, or what you'll encounter between now and then, so you save your AP until you need them.

I see no reason to make it per session, as most people don't use AP on a per session basis under the default rules anyway (except the Artificer, and even then not all of them do).

The reason it goes bad in our style is the fact that when the players cant see on there "xp bar" how long till level up. soo if someone wanna save it to an important fight they could end with a situation where I as a GM have decided its time to level up and they havent used there AP. Where as people who hands out xp every encounter/session/something the players have some sort of idea when they will level up.

I hope you can understand why i dont think the official system works for us.

Yes, I understand what you're saying, but even with the normal xp system, there is no reason to assume that the biggest fight will be at the end of the level, which means if you save your AP that long, you will either use them just to use them, or you'll level and lose them.

In my experience, most players will save AP until they look like they're going to fail a save or miss an important hit. Really, the idea of rationing your AP out because you know you're about to level is metagaming, and you would actually get BETTER use of them with your format.

And the often overlooked bit that you can get additional AP by doing cool things in game, the listed AP are more akin to your bare minimum for the level. You do lots of cool stuff, you're going to have lots of AP. Its not a static number that just counts down to 0 and you have to wait to level to get more.

IMO, just use AP as written, and when you're getting low, you know to really get into your roleplaying for a rousing speech or a flashy combat to refill your AP reserve. Not only do you not need to worry about changing rules, you actively encourage better roleplaying. Its win-win.

I give my PC's 2+half level (rounded down) in AP every session. It seems to work pretty well, and they always have a pool to use.

In my experience my players only seem to use them when they really need it. They know that at the end of the session something BIG usually happens so they hold out until then. Even with the AP every session they will still run out of them and wish they had more.

I also allow them to use AP to re-roll a failed roll. A remanant from when I ran Shadowrun for SOOOOO long. They really dig that option even though it may also end up in failure as well, just with a really heroic effort for it :)

I just finished a level without using a single action point. A situation to do something awesome or desperately requiring to save my butt just didn't come up.

I'm not ticked. They're still there for when I need them.

That doing it per-session does is mean the players metagame to save their points until the end of the session, instead of metagaming to save their points until the end of the level. :P

That's how I'm running my game and I also use action points. I give action points at the end of the adventure regardless of whether the PCs level. I also give them during the game whenever they do something really cool or fun. I just ignore the limit on how many they can have at any given time.
