My group is thinking of starting an Eberron Campaign relatively soon, maybe this summer, and I was wondering from you experienced ECS players if actions points are really that influential and enough of a reason to play the PrC Extreme Explorer. From a role-playing standpoint, it sounds like a great PrC becuae you can try things you have no right to try because you stand the chance to make the roll with the use of an action point. Otherwise, using the feat that lets you spend 2 APs to get an extra standard action to cast an extra spell in a round spell sounds great (like a v.3.0 hasted caster for the one round when you really need it).

It depends on the players, actually.
Many players new to the setting will actually horde their action points out of fear of "what if I need them later?" Which means they often level up without spending them all.

When you get a character that subscribes to "Easy Come, Easy Go", especially an Extreme Explorer with that attitude, you'll see lots of fun stuff getting pulled.

One of the zillion Eberron characters I would like to try out would be an Extreme Explorer built from a Barbarian base with the Raging Luck Feat. I personally think that Action Points are the Cat's Pyjamas, and the more you do to get more the better off you'll be. Especially when they turn into D8s instead of D6s.

Do you think Ranger or Rogue the better way to go for the Extreme Explorer?

Rogue, I'd go with Rogue.

Actually if you're looking for a build that has the most action point, consider:
Character with Least Dragonmark and Favored in House Feat, then
2 levels of the DragonMark Heir class to get Additional Action points, max. action points per level is increased by 2.
2 levels of Master Inquistive when you get Bonus Feat - Heroic Spirit +3 action points per level
and then go into Extreme Explorer

Actually I'm not entirely sure about the requirements, you might have to take all 5 levels of each PRC or something, but I know it can be done. Action points galore.

So far, the most frequent use of Action Points I've seen is the automatic stabilization.

I might be hitting them a *wee* bit too hard. :)

On the other hand, that's the only time I actually prompt Action Point expenditure, because nobody remembers it; everybody remembers the die roll bonus.

I've recently built an 8th-level Extreme Explorer - a House Orien heir who started as a courier and then turned explorer and dungeoneer. His build was Ranger at 1st level for the skills, followed by 5 levels of Rogue and 2 of Extreme Explorer. Makes for an excellent build with a great range of skills for dungeoneering.

I had a similiar character in my last campaign. I think he started out as a swashbuckler... ended up as a swashbuckler 3, ranger 2, rogue 2 and then into extreme explorer... An Orien heir who liked to study at morgrave university and go on expeditions when he wasn't going to upper class galas and/or actually working for House Orien. He was shipwrecked in Xendrik and spent a good two months in the jungles before making it back to Stormreach, which was where the ranger levels came in. Most of his experience before that was more intrigue in Sharn (and exploring below Sharn)

Although after picking up Races of Eberron, I'd have to say that the Relic Hunter feat would of been an excellent fit for this character as well.

EDIT: I meant to say that Relic Hunter would be an excellent fit for ALL extreme explorers, not just the examples Mark and I were talking about.

Lots of food for thought. Thanks! I was thinking Rgr 2 , Rogue 3 myself. In any case, seems like a lot of fun to play, like Edy said in his immediate repsonse, and I found his ideas hold fairly true to my (and my groups) style of fun.

I just recently whipped up a Scout-based Extreme Explorer (Complete Adventurer)- excellent for mobility and skill points, and the extra move action is v. nice for a class that adds to their damage and AC after traveling at least 10'. Of course, even with a lucky roll of 18 and playing human, I still manage to not have enough skill points ;).
