| elvenwizard08-15-05, 03:01 PM | It shames me to have to do this, but I send out a request for an adventure hook for a group of 2nd level characters. Normally I pride myself on coming up with my own adventure ideas, but I am afraid that with the advent of school, I have been occupied with other matters and thus have hit writer's block. Any suggestions would be apreciated. |

At 2nd level the easiest of all hooks is the "Get hired by a patron" ... Someone heard about them doing a job (maybe the Forgotten Forge?) and has what seems like a simple job for them -- retrieve item X from location Y. Of course, the patron doesn't tell them about groups A, B, and C, who also want item X (and group C, who actively protect item X at location Y).... So, they start out doing a simple job for pay, and find themselves dealing with far more NPCs and organizations than they expected. Do they switch sides? Do they find out what their patron is after item X for? You get the idea.... |

Maybe start the session with the PCs in their "new" postwar line of work, have someone say "Remember when..." and then fade to the flashback. I think it'd do quite well to ensure that the PCs have a close tie to one another, and have a good reason to still be working together. And it sure beats the heck out of "You meet other prospective adventurers in a bar, and decide to join forces..." Done really well, the flashback would be relevant in some way to the current adventure - maybe they're chasing a former enemy, or they've just run across a dead war buddy, or they're tromping across a former battlefield. Actually, I think it'd be neat to have the flashback/cutscene occur as the PCs are traveling cross-country in a lightning rail (maybe en route for some job), having small talk, and do a segue cutscene where the scenery slowly shifts into the Last War perspective (the PC blinks, and the farming village is now a smouldering ruin, he blinks again and the trees have been cut down to form temporary fortifications, he blinks again, and there's a volley of burning arrows or "artillery" spells arcing downwards and leaving tracers across the night sky, he blinks again, and the PC's are rushing a foxhole as crossbow bolts impact the ground around them...and then "Roll Initiative..."). I think that would be an absolutely AWESOME way to start an Eberron campaign. Of course, what to do next, that's a different post... :) |
