One thing I'm trying to think about is how to get the adventurers to get involved in some adventures involving some of the more local issues in other countries....like most of the adventure hooks in each of the country descriptions in the ECS. Why would some patron come to Sharn to talk to the PC's about some local thing that occurs in the Eldeen Reaches or Aundair?

In certain situations, a patron might want to enlist foreigners because he or she can't trust local citizens. It might be because there are traitors in their midst, or because the patron can trust adventurers from other countries to be above local politics.

Another possibility, especially if the PCs have made a name for themselves (a few successful adventures and some publicity in the Korranberg Chronicle could do that), is that the patron seeks the PCs out because of their reputation.

Because they have a rep, if you've done the adventures for house Cannith then people will have heard about them. Also the patrons my not be looking for them specifically, Sharn is know for it collection of adventures. The Tower Watch my point people toward different adventuring groups when people come calling. Also pre-paid passage usually gets most peoples attention. I cant think of an adventurer that would pass up the opportunity to ride on an airship and get free travel back to Sharn when done with business. :)

There is another thing affecting the reputation of your PCs. Unlike in forgotten realms, the PCs may be the only group with real skills to speak of. No other team has action points like your party does. No other team is going to leap above the competition like the true pulp action heroes your party is made of.
They will be like the Justice League. Sure there are other bands of heroes out there, but when extradimensional baddies spring from the gulf of the unknown everyone will know that it is the PCs who are the only ones to turn to.

Sharn is a great place to start because almost every organization presented in the ECS has operatives either living or working in Sharn. Every dragonmarked house, most major acedemic institutions, criminal sydicates... You name it. Even foreign governments... ambassadors, spies, and so on. The only organizations I think might be troublesome would be the Drudic sects, but who knows? I Sharn, you can find almost anything.

You won't have patrons coming to Sharn to look for adventurers. The patrons will already be there, and if they notice somebody remarkable (which all player characters in Eberron should be), they'll hire them. There may be people nearer to home that might work for less, but when the patron hears about a fighter who single-handedly stopped a robbery or a rogue who somehow robbed a Kundarak enclave... They'll probably figure out who'll give them more bang for their buck.

The above answers were awesome......I wish I had something of that caliber to give you!

You can also use very simple hooks to get PCs to other locals where they can meet patrons. MY PCs have been adventuring in Sharn since the beginning of my first Eberron game (only 6 weeks :)) and they love it, but I wanted to give them the opportunity to get out of the city for a little while if they wanted.

The PCs were just robbing a warehouse that some pirates had been storing some swag in. During the robbery some of the pirates came along and tried to stop them. I put a deed to some land in the Lhazaar Principalities in the pocket of one of the (now dead) pirates.

The group may just sell the deed in Sharn, or maybe they will sail off to Lhazaar on the next ship! IF they do leave, they could go right to Lhazaar, and get involved in the insanity over there, or maybe have to dock in Newthrone on the way for supplies when the Poison Dusk Lizardfolk tribe attacks the city!

Hope this Helps!

More than likely because it affects a local issuse for the heroes. A criminal organization may make it's base in Sharn, but there can also be branches of that organization elsewhere. Instead of trying to assult the seemingly invincible headquarters in Sharn that is more than likely well hidden from the eyes of many, than in a forgien country that a high inquisitor or noble has snuffed out.

Sharn is relatively HUGE. 300,000, no other city has that population unless you made one yourself and placed it in the Eberron campagin. Another metropolis of just 100,000 or 150,000 is going to be easier to investigate urban track and police. In Sharn there are so many bridges, dead ends, and people that trails go cold faster.

In other cities criminals run under the very noses of the law without the resources to comabt them, justifying another metropolis hearing of the hero's successes in Sharn and calling them forth to put an end to the criminal activity.

Karnath and Thrane will be big on forgieners. they have way too many political issuses and secret not to invite some group of half fast, half thought heroes(or so the politicans believe) to solve thier problems, usually those caused by each other.

Zilgaro is a good choice for Breland, as it is a nearby friendly country with a lot of resources. Gnomes can hire adventures and still maintain a neutral perspective against other Dragon marked houses and other gnomes.

Hoped this helped guy.

Foreigners can also be in Sharn visiting, doing research or something in Sharns schools/libraries and museums.
I know, sharn isn’t known for its schools/libraries, but hay, it’s a possibility.

Other ideas, kalistar in Sharn are worried about inspired in Q’Barra…..
