| tmaaas06-29-04, 09:51 AM | Hello, My wife and I will be starting a new Eberron campaign in August (we co-DM together). The PCs will all be employees aboard Lyrandar airship, and we thought we'd start a thread for adventure ideas. In other words, help us brainstorm! A little background... The PCs are hired to work aboard the newest airship in the house Lyrandar fleet. They will hold a variety of positions, from guards to standard crew to entertainers. The ship itself--the Liralen--is the first of a new model: faster, larger, and more luxurious than any before (of course, we're using the picture in the CS for the Liralen). And it will serve a different purpose within the fleet. House Lyrandar airships usually serve only major metropolises and cities. But they have been receiving pressure from various factions of power and wealth to have a ship available for privately chartered flights. In a bold move, house Lyrandar decided to accommodate these requests not with an older or smaller ship, but with their newest and best. The Liralen is complete and ready for its maiden voyage: from Stormhome to Scarn, travelling through Aundair, Thrane, and Breland. Dignitaries from all three nations, various churches, and other houses are present for this prestigious and historic trip. Please feel free to give ideas not only for the maiden voyage, but for the future as well. We're looking to build up a repository of adventure hooks. As such, the ideas can be for both shipside and dockside. They can be single session or meta plot. Any and all are welcome. Thanks, tmaaas & Micah |
| Brianish06-29-04, 10:54 AM | This one is probably obvious, but with all the dignitaries on board, maybe one of them is killed, making a whodunnit mystery that could potentially fall to any of the other nations. Also, maybe agents of The Lord of Blades hijack the sucker later on. |
| Taurren06-29-04, 11:12 AM | Another basic idea could be that the airship is forced to make an emergency landing to effect repairs caused by Accident / Sabotage / Storm etc. The landing site is near a location that is vitally important to one of the dignitaries, who insists that the Capt send guards with him as he investigates. Tie that in with a reason for the ship to be airborn within a limited period of time and you have a fast paced dungeon crawl on your hands. You also have the exotic cities along the ships route. Of course you can't forget Gopher, the Captains Assistant, Julie the passengers liason and a smart-mouthed bartender for flavoring. |
| icemanjmw06-29-04, 12:14 PM | I really like the idea of the PCs being crew aboard a ship, in fact I may have to borrow/steal that idea, as that sounds like a good way for my PCs to meet up. My options would be different from yours tmaaass simply because I'll only be using the ship for a couple adventures and then I can have it wrecked/attacked/etc. One suggestion for the types of adventure you need, how about dropping clues that the elemental bound to the Airship is slowly getting free. Not sure how you'd work it exactly, but it's all I could come up with. |
| Axys06-29-04, 12:21 PM |:devil: I have another idea....with House Lyrandar and House Orien competing for trade speculation and contracts, what about having an Orien strike-team hijack the maiden voyage of the airship to pressure the Lyrandar factions out of some lucrative contracts with the nations that some of the dignitaries are from?:devil: I love cutthroat business tactics *WEG* |
| Hand of Evil06-29-04, 12:27 PM | Blown off course - storm arises and not to endanger the Dignitaries an alternate route has to be charted. Under Siege - a group gets aboard the ship and takes over. The players are the only free members of the crew! Murder - Always a good one. |

| Wotc_Mark06-29-04, 04:20 PM | I've always been a fan of the who-dun-it style mystery. You could even throw a little suspense in it for yourself if you use the clue board game as a basis and the party gets to work out the mystery and confront someone who inevitably is a shape changer or some high level something masquerading as a commoner or crew member. There was a cool murder mystery video game quite a few years back called "Murder on the Zinderzeuff" or close to that spelling ... that was clue like but took place on a zeppelin in about 1930-35 I believe. I had a copy on my Atari 800 when I was a youngster. Just my 2 cents worth :) MJ |

| Hrothgar the Dwarf06-30-04, 12:47 AM | after picking up the officials, they get blown off course my a very strange storm and crash into the gray mist and into the mournland. Have to make their way out, keeping the officials safe so as to not start a international incident. They could have landed right next to the edge and start going in the wrong direction. Maybe LoBster comes in to play at some point? hrothgar |
| Silverfury7906-30-04, 01:53 AM | I like the idea of a story involving the Lord of Blades's followers but I would think about the target being a passenger instead of the whole ship. Maybe on a Journey from Aundair to Sharn a group of Warforged take control of the ship and kill a member of House Cannith taking something from his Cabin; Documents concerning Warforged creation the Cannith member was sneaking from the Fairhaven House enclave to Merrix d'Cannith in Sharn or something similar.(This plot can easily be made to work with almost any faction after something of intrest to them on the ship depending on your campaign) A port campaign could involve one of the Lyrander Pilot necissary to control the bound elemental (I figure the ship would have at least three so they could work in shifts and for emergencies) disappearing now the PCs must find him/her before the ship leaves port as scheduled, this plot could lead a number of ways if the disappearance was the pilot's own idea or not. Just a few ideas. Silverfury :b: |
| Saurenda06-30-04, 03:15 AM | When Lammania(spelling?) of the wild plane of elementals comes into being cotermerious with Eberron you could have the airship plane shift accidently of course or purposefully by some consiprator to end up in a space of seemingly infinite air with no way of landing or restocking supplies. Slowly the aristocrat PCS and players would see thier food supply dwindeling as I would think no abroitum or farm exsists on an airship, I can be wrong, but have them slowly waste away or turn on one another. Another idea is a Gatekeeper Druid or activist of some elemetnal simpathiezer freeing the governing elemental which keeps the ship afloat. Perhaps someone in House Ly kidbaps the ship without the crew or passangers knowing and the people on the ground have no idea how to contact anyone on board and tell them they are being randsomed till they land behind schedual to the passanger and crew's knowledge. You could always crash into an inivisble floating tower. Or perhaps into some cloudy object or monster hidden from view. I do enjoy a good murder mystery, but while it has it's charms lets face it. If it happens every week no noble in thier right mind will want a seat on your floating death trap. Also, I hope the captain of your ship is not the only one capable of flying or getting the elemtnal governing the ships functions to obey. The crew could mutany plain and simple. The PCs could mutany and hold the dignitaries for randsom. House Lycanther could hold Khor in the plam of it's hands using the ship to secretly abduct diplomats and hypnotise them making them think they are passangers unbestknown to your pcs. Silly ideas huh? |

| Damien_Hiro06-30-04, 09:24 AM | I was thinking about doing a "Speed" version. "You are on an airship climbing up 10 ft per round and going 50 knots per hour ad if you drop down to 40 kphs you will explode killing everyone on board. What will you do?" Something like that woul be fun with exploding featherfalling lifeboats. I have an PC who took ranks in Air Pirate a couple of years ago in one of our campaigns. Long Live the Alliance. |

I would probably use magic to fool the speedometer, or get an engineer to do it. Wow, five seconds and that stupid movie is gone forever. Don't know why it took them two hours in the movie. Lets see: Prestidigitation, um levitation, that can hold up the whatever it is to 40 right? Or is the entire ship riggid with 20th century cameras too? Let me guess someone in the house of telecomunications. Damn that house of Verizon. (Jeraico?) Um, ok then I'll jetison the bomb over the mournlands and laugh at the Lobster below me? Seeing how an airship has much more room than a new yok bus this is not a problem to solve or find where a bomob big enough to knock the airship out of the sky is located on the ship. Also guy. I don't know if you know this, but seeing as the sky is mostly empty space, there is really no danger of a speed situation like the movie. Are most of these Eberron citizens in floating cities? Alright, ok , I'll let it go... Not in anyway derogatory towards the last poster, but I'd hurt myself before suggesting speed. Thats just me though. I don't like ripping off movies in a place as rich and potientally good as Eberron. Cheapens it somehow. At any rate to get back to the thread you could someone from teh house of transportation to teleport a few shock shock tropps onboard to shake things up. So many people talk about knocking the ship of course that a good Dm would take measures against it. As wonderful as it may seem this Airship of Aristocrats seems doomed to death by the mundane, and the predictable. I'd honestly bring along a chaplin like a silver flame exorcist just incase someone tried the unthinkable. Possessing the captain or using the crew as an undead army to crash the Airship into the tallest tower in Sharn. There you go Damien Hirok, long live your alliance or whatever. |
| Saurenda06-30-04, 11:49 AM | Originally posted by bahamut_0 Yes but I love em :) Thanks, lets hope those Dm husband and wife think so. Your name suggests to me another plot. What if this airship could leave the stratesphere as a special feature? What if it was so powerful and the air elemental provided an enviroment as far as the rings of syberius? Ah well now thats just dreaming alothegether. To be honest can you raise elementals the same way you raise beasts of burden? Spawn an airelemental from a wild one so that it thinks your it's family or what not or would it insticntually want to be free like the wind? Ah well. Also if we are also going to suggest funny ideas like the speed thing, why not have one of the connecting rings severed in an act of sabotauge? It seems no one is suspecting the crew or house Lycanther itself of political apartiesem. Every house has political infighting and a new head of house who held the fate of every airship in his/her hand could easily take control of the house. As for the Tallest tower thing I was joking and apologise to everyone. I just wanted to demonstrate how silly that speed idea was, though if it is your cup of tea, by all means my opinion means nothing to stop you. I just thing it is ridiculous because only a few buildings seem floating in the world and eagles could easy be used as a safe way to evactuate. not regular ones that mage bred dragonhawk ones. Why have featherfalling anything? Parachutes and Trained animals in a crisis make me feel better, despite magic items which can be tampered with, not that the others cannot be tampered with themselves. Oo; |
| Damien_Hiro06-30-04, 12:25 PM | Anyway, I did not say the bomb was something you can levitate. I said you will explode. So if you are willing to throw you self off a ship and take one for the team then go ahead. Also I do not think levitation will maintain an object to 40 kph(knots per hour) or 73 miles per hour. At 10, 000 feet it gets really hard to breath. Ever fly through a cloud? It sucks and does not feel too good, been there done that and got the t-shirt in afganistan in a CH-47 and neither is crashing into a floating city or mountain. I think that would be a blast to run around and do something along those lines for a session. |

There is nothing stopping a player from blowing a small hole in the die of the ship and simply levitating the bomb out. Lets do physicas you going at the required speed per hour and thus so is the levitatewd object. Get it out several hundred feet out and let it drop. No crisis. Never was one. Everyone back to the buffet and martini hour. If levitation is truly against your tastes I'm sure my unseen servant will be willing to take one for the team or a summoned monster. They are always willing. |
