Affecting Disguise? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-02-05, 07:26 AM Recently played out an encounter with a changeling beggar who couldn't alter his appearance due to severe scarring - a flask of acid had badly burned his face.
Now I'm wondering whether this would be realistic, or whether the changeling would still be able to alter its appearance to someone in its 'portfolio' but with an imposed Disguise check penalty?
Any thoughts....?

08-02-05, 12:03 PM It should be able to shape change with no penalty. I mean if it wants to it can cover itself in scars, why couldn't it remove them?

08-02-05, 12:42 PM Worst case, if it was some sort of supernatural (or otherwise magical) acid, maybe the scars carry over into the alternate forms, unless the changeling successfully makes a Disguise check against a reaosnable DC (15, maybe?).

'T'would certainly make for an entertaining character concept, IMO - one with a uniquely changeling disability.

08-02-05, 12:53 PM Well, going strictly by the rules, a Cure Light Wounds or possibly even a successful Heal check would get rid of acid burns. You don't leave your PCs horribly scarred every time they get hit with Melf's Acid Arrow, do you?

But I guess it's possible that acid damage could make parts of the changeling unshiftable. Though in my campaign I would say it would have to be some kind of magical damage to really stick.

I would think that it could look like a heavily scarred elf with no penalty, but there would be a pretty big penalty to look like a specific elf that doesn't have any scars. Also the changling could supplement the shapshifting with a mundane disguise to hide the scars.

This is probably a grey area where you should make a ruling ot fit the needs of the campaign.

08-02-05, 03:26 PM I'd say it's possible in the name of dramatic nescessity, though not covered in the rules. Maybe some changelings can shift over scars and others can't, maybe that's not the case at all. Either way, let it slide. If you know a changeling (Maybe one's in the party) they'll tell you what the DM thinks is true.
Well, going strictly by the rules, a Cure Light Wounds or possibly even a successful Heal check would get rid of acid burns.Maybe so, but this guy's a beggar. Jorasco charges for heal checks and clerics rarely hand out miracles.
