The traditional two-page spread by Mr. Reynolds depicts (amongst other things) a dragonmarked Dwarf playing a game of chess against a pair of dragonmarked halflings who are, in my humble opinion, cheating their little pointy butts off. You can see it in their eyes.

The chess-set is clearly the same design and color as the one WotC released last month.

Good job Wayne.

I thought the two little people were House Sivis gnomes?

They do similar things with Three-Dragon Ante. In various artworks, you'll find characters playing the game or holding a hand of the cards. I was hoping the cards on the cover of Complete Scoundrel would be Three-dragon Ante cards just for fun, but they're not.

I'll have to ask Wayne, but I personally thought they were Sivis gnomes. The woman is about how I envision Alina Lorridan Lyrris (from The Dreaming Dark), and the sly tone certainly fits Zilargo.

Being the Gnomemaster, i thought they were were gnomes. Although, since there are two of them, and there are two halfling houses, that makes me think they are halflings. Because it seems there is one representative from the houses. right?

Well there are only two small people in that picture and sad to say it looks like they are both halflings. Neither has the look of a gnome to me.

Well, even if neither look ....is gnome-ish a word? Anyway look at their hands Both Bear the mark of scribing on their hands, I think it is both on their left but I am not quite sure and odds are I should't fully dork out and bring my eberron books to my college classes.

...mainly because I get stuck with a stupid grin on my face whenever I see the "true" aberrant marks on page 141. I was wondering what kind of dragonmark to get as a tatoo, now i don't have to wonder anymore.

And on the side note of every house being depicted the ones I do not see are imho: Vidalis Ghallanda, Jorasco, Orien and Medani

The three elves on off to the side look like they are from either/or house(sorry, me and the elves of dnd have never gotten along I tend to avoid the two houses of theirs) Then there is the half-elf from Lyrandar riding in on the storm, the Tharask Half-orc, the Kundarak dwarf, the Denieth human, the two sivis gnomes and the Canith human with accompanying 'forged.

also it would be a little tough to represent 12 houses with only 10 people in the artwork.

This little analysis came from me assuming the exact same thing as Gnomemaster and then giving the artwork a hard onceover with the Art Historian part of my brain.

It's spelled Gnomish and like I say of all applied linguistics, if it wasn't a word before, it is now.

They are gnomes. Their hands have the Mark of Scribing. I think it is the lesser one.

Believe me, just look at my name :-P

Thank you for posting the picture. Only wish that it could be made larger and still be clear ... oh well...

Actually, I think the person you have pegged as a Deneith human is actually a Phiarlan Elf, and the three elves on the leftmost part of the picture are Thuranni Elves. You'll notice that there's a subtle glare of animosity between them. She's also rather bardy-looking, which would make sense for a Phiarlan. And she has elvish features.

hmm you may be right, I do beleive the main reason I pegged her as Deneith was the mark sticking outta her pants, though I may be wrong as the shadow and sentinel marks do look alot alike. As I am once again working from memory since I don't have my book on me and the picture is too small to identify i'm gonna toss it off to you. Though you gotta admit 9 outta 10 form memory is still pretty good considering.

Those gnomes sure have some dodgy expressions. Probably using the game as a personality test.

Whether they're gnomes or not, this is definitely my favorite Eberron spread by Mr. Reynolds so far.

As long as we're talking about silly artwork, flip to page 52. On the left column, they're discussing Taelyn d'Lyrandar. His description clearly states that he doesn't have the Mark of Storms, yet if you look up at the picture they drew of him, you can see a dragonmark right on his forehead.

Uh-oh!

And if you really wanted to get technical, the portraits of the 3 Tharashk members on page 79 are most likely mislabeled, based on the description of each clan in the third paragraph under "Playing a Member of House Tharashk."

Judging from the dragonmarks, and comparing to the ECS, there is a Thuranni with two other elves (probably also Thuranni, since they seem to be his aides or something) flanking him, then a Mark that is hard to decipher because it goes up a lightning charged arm (but I think it's Orien, based on the part that isn't covered in lightning), then there's a Tharask heir, a Kundarak heir, a Phiarlan at the table (has a very clear Mark of Shadow), then a Cannith with his 'forged and two Gnomes of House Sivis. The Marks are definately of Scribing on the two little people. So no halfling Houses represented. No Vadalis or Deneith for sure, and probably no half-elves (maybe one of the flankers of the Thuranni is a half-elf, and some of my friends are adamant that the round-eared one is Lyrandar just because of the lightning, despite no point to the ear, and there's also the fact that later in the book a lightning-esque effect is part of an Orien heir's teleporting).

So 6 of the 12 Marks are represented here. Making, Warding, Passage, Scribing, Finding and Shadow.

No Sentinel, Hospitality, Healing, Storm, Detection, or Handling. And, no death obviously.
