Kensan_Oni 03-15-07, 10:54 AM	You know, I was thinking... what if there were county fairs like there are where I was growing up in Eberron. What kind of things would you expect to find there. I came up with this list, but I am sure there are more ideas. The list so far... Three different Livestock shows. You would have your traditional show, your mage-breed show, then your exotic show. The exotic show would be where all your pegasi, rust monsters, Griffions, and more would be displayed. Two different Floral shows. One with local plants, another with exotics from Xen'Drix Illusion Shows Pie Eating Contests Horrid Ribs being sold near the carnival section. The Day of Cyre haunted house where you walk through a dark maze with people ready to go boogy at you, and a big magical flash at the end of the maze where you walk through a room of fog. Towers of Sharn fall down ride. A Monsters from Nightmares exibit, containing normal animals cleverly arranged to look like they come from the Dreaming. Dragon Shard displays The wonders of Communication Exhibition Hall, sponsered by House Sivis. A mini-Lightning Rail that zooms around a track for children. A game where a Minotaur fends off children and other small creatures beating it with padded sticks, playing up the scary bit, and let's himself "be defeated" after a few minutes.

Interesting ideas, but it might be too early to do this without offending a lot of people. Few might care about the Cyrans, but people in Sharn still remember Crystallfall. Of course, the controversial nature of such a ride could make its inclusion into a campaign worthwhile already: lots of roleplaying potential there. As for my own contributions: Destruction of Sharn Ride: Based on your Towers of Sharn ride, but related to the final stages of the War of the Mark. Freak Shows: Aberrations, captured dolgrim, people with symbionts, aberrant dragonmarked. Exotic Rides: Letting children (and adults) ride dinosaurs, pegasi and other fun creatures Live Carricatures: Watch changelings take on your faces and do scary or funny things with them. Fights: Like formerly country-fairs had cockfights and dogfights, but here between summoned creatures. Crossbow Shooting Range: Self-explanatory; as a variant, use ray of frost wands or Talenta boomerangs.

spell_weaver 03-15-07, 06:29 PM	it actually is a pretty cool idea. Eberron isnt all dark pulp action, people still need to take it easy. this is a nice oppurtunity for characters to have some fun or use it as a new adventure hook.
Seghan 03-15-07, 07:08 PM	Depending on the political climate of the fair(e), it could be an ideal location for stumping by opposition demagogues. Brelander republicans, Karrn BoV devotees, Cyran sepratists; all can use faires as popular pulpits and make them natural loci for pulp intrigue.

You don't kill your competition (usually) you buy them out. Or open up your own fair and crush them financially. Any performers there are likely to be Phiarlan certified anyways so they are getting a piece of the pie. Vadalis would be needed for the magebred and exotic livestock. Cannith workmen would build and maintain like everything. Deneith would provide security. It's a good thing for them. PS. I understand you were probably just throwing out a plot idea I just don't think they're the most likely saboteurs.

Phiarlan or Thuranni is the one bankrolling/running the fair and the other house is the one trying to sabotage it. Now that'd be fun! Spy Vs Spy!

They probably never were this sophisticated unless thrown by a king or other major lord, but they did exist. With magic and exploration, I wouldn't be surprised if real-life fairs would have been as exciting as the ones proposed here. There'd probably be a list of politically correct topics. No undead exhibits; you don't want Thranites burning the whole place down!

Except if you look at Victorian-era circuses, faires, and freak-shows, things there were seldom what we'd call "Politically Correct". There were PLENTY of things that the religious right would get all bent out of shape about. And besides that... do you really think certain Flamers are going to be upset about keeping some vampire chained up in a glass box (to keep him from getting out in mistform) and occasionally exposing him to sunlight for laughs? I doubt it. I'd be more worried about the BoV trying to spring him.
