an Interesting Idea for story motivation [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was thinking of using the Sharn Inquisitive and other related articles as well as parts from the books to build a "newspaper" of sorts, give a copy to each player so they can read and learn about eberron, find "Jobs" and such. Heres what I was thinking of adding:

-some world news stuff
-"job listings"
-Buying and selling want ads
-a spotlight on who's who of Khorvaire
-wanted "posters" for criminals

Some adventures that the PC's don't take I'll have atempted by npc groups of adventurers and have that for news too. I figure this is a good way to present options to the party, and let them pick the course of the adventure. It would also make the world seem more "alive" and entertaining, especialy when the party makes it in the news for what the did.

Any coments and suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks, Jack Altrades

All in all, I believe that to be an awesome idea. It's a bit daunting, because what are you going to do if you have options A B C & D, and the players pick C and they want to do it that night? Are you going to improvise or have each possibility fleshed out?

It also sounds time consuming, but still very cool. I just might steal it.

I prepare an issue of the Inquisitive for each session and make copies for all four of my players.

The response has been great ... it lets me plant some foreshadowing and introduce some NPCs and plot elements and it lets me show the players what's happening elsewhere in the world. I usually include a hook or two, and generally at least one article from the Eberron site's Sharn Inquisitive. I generally include ads for shops where the PCs can buy or sell and included a few "help wanted" ads when the group was just getting started. Currently, it's a great way to show how the PCs' actions are viewed throughout Sharn as they become more well-known.

This is the thread I started to get suggestions: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=501312

There's some GREAT advice there. You might want to chack www.dafont.com for fonts to make your version look more distinctive. I use Microsoft Word, and it's turned out pretty well. I would recommend getting some nice paper from a hobby shop to make it look more "authentic" than plain white printer paper. I use a light brown paper that makes it look a bit more like parchment.

If you're interested, shoot me an e-mail and I'll e-mail you a copy of a few issues.

I often make a newspaper as a follow up after an adventure, dropping hints about things they accomplished and giving them leads for further adventures.

Great fun. Try using Publisher if you have access to it. It makes them a breeze to whip up.
