Analyzing House Deneith's Crest [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-28-07, 08:13 PM I've been trying to expand on House Deneith for some character background, and I've been studying the crest.

The creature on House Deneith's crest is a Chimera, which I hypothesize was chosen as each head is representative of the main branchs of the house: The Sentinel Marshals, the Blademarks and the Defender's Guild. So, my question/discussion topic: Which head do you think represents which branch and why? Or, do you have an alternative explanation for the Chimera representing Deneith?

This is my guess:

The Sentinel Marshals -> Green Dragon: The dragon head is between the other heads, which represents that the Marshals fall between the duties of the Blademarks and the Defenders.

Blademarks -> Lion's Head: I'm not really sure, but I figured the Lion is a hunter, which makes it better suited for the Blademarks.

Defender's Guild -> Goat's Head: Sorta the only one left.

03-28-07, 09:02 PM It's an interesting interpretation. I've never really thought about it myself. If the Lion is a hunter, however, wouldn't that make him a better fit for the Sentinel Marshals since they hunt down criminals? Just a thought.

03-29-07, 10:57 AM I think it likely that the crest was probably adopted before the various branches were formalized. So, although it may be that the branches now identify with one of the three heads, it is unlikely that the crest was chosen because of the heads.

The heads probably - originally anyway - represented ideals, as taski suggests.

That's certainly another good possibility. The reason I went with each head for each branch is also because I'm trying to figure out what each branch wears to differentiate themselves. The picture of Deneith soldiers from Dragonmarked (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/Dragonmarked_Gallery/101305.jpg) shows the Defender's Guild soldier in the centre with a Lion on his tabard, and I thought maybe they each used one head as a symbol of their branch.

While this certainly seems plausible I think we should stick with the ideal-behind-each-symbol idea. After all the meaning behind having is three-headed creature is that it comprises all the "natures" of each monster it has. And those usually represent ideas/ideals.

Have both. Its plausable that following the ideals line of thought, the Defenders Guild focuses most on the Bravery aspect (or whatever virtue you'd chose). Each of them stresses a specific virtue over the others, but all of the combined are the true potency of the House.
