What do you think about the idea of warforged gender components? Better living through implants, that’s what I say. There’s no plausible reason why a cookie-cutter creation forge would create gendered warforged, but if a warforged character can make any components they wanted, they could make themselves any gender they wanted (and just think of the enhancements they could invent...). As an added bonus, if the changeling transgender trick floats a player's boat, there's no reason why warforged gender mods can't be swapped out like Mr. Potatohead parts. I noticed on the discussion boards that lots of people wanted their warforged to have a real gender (for various reasons) so if anyone wants a price list for these components, maybe WOTC should send it in a plain brown wrapper.

Anyways, just an idea I had while deleting some unsolicited emails.

well the first question has to be who would make these?

being magical they'd almost have to be house cannith work and how many NPC warforged are going to be not only willing but able to raise enough funds to pay for the neccessary research to develop such a complex item. not to mention that since warforged creation is illegal under the treaty of thronehold no one is really going to want to give them a way to create more of themselves which might be construde as breaking that treaty.

Um, no. To use the Tripping the Rift vernacular "No banging attatchments".

I'd never even think of making this kind of thing. Mostly because one of my players is obesessed with WF and kind of an immature perv on top of that...

Is there actually no possible way to make people on these boards stop using the word gender when they mean sex? A warforged already develops a male or female gender, what they're created is sexless and genderless and then they go on to gain a gender through exposure to society. It's been annoying me no-end.

What worries me is the perv that gets wind of this, gets a huge one, and asks how much damage it would do if he started beating things to death with it.

stupid idea, warforged do not need to reproduce sexually, so they do not feel the need to have sex (can i say that?) so, a warforged doesn't need any "gender component" and having one would be a waste of money, space, time and skill. They don't want one, they don't need one.

Wouldn't it be more of a challenge to play a being that had absolutely no reproductive motives and desires, and that resisted other creatures' attempts to impose such?

There was a great bit in "The Brave Little Toaster" (the original short story from F&SF Magazine, not the cartoon) about how some squirrels were telling the title character jokes which it absolutely could not understand because it had no concept of sex (or gender, for that matter). I'm of the opinion that there's more humor/drama to be mined from the asexuality of the warforged than from the one-shot gag of a warforged with "extras."

You could develop these attachments... nothing in the rules against it. But for sweet mercy's sake, do you really want to? What do you do with the game then? Make Lt. Yar/Data jokes?

To the OP: You certainly could do something like that, but would it really add anything to the game? (Besides a few dumb jokes that would get old real quick.)

Yeah, unless you're running a pen and paper cyber sex session, what exactly would this give you that you don't get normally? I mean, I don't know about any of you, but the person that tries to roleplay something like this out at my table is going to find himself sitting on my curb.

Would it not be a challenge to play a being that had absolutely no reproductive motives or desires, and attempted to understand the joy that other creatures find from this? It is not very different from a warforged attempting to understand the pleasure we take in fine food and drink. The proposed warforged components are not neccessary per se, but they are a logical path for a warforged to take if he/she/it were curious.

To my mind there isnt much challenge at all to play a warforged who resists sexual temptation, since warforged by default do not have any sort of sex drive. Using the food analogy again, its like trying to tempt a warforged with filet mignon. Or better yet, its like trying to tempt a warforged guard to fall asleep on watch.

Yeah, unless you're running a pen and paper cyber sex session, what exactly would this give you that you don't get normally? I mean, I don't know about any of you, but the person that tries to roleplay something like this out at my table is going to find himself sitting on my curb.

One of my Eberron characters is a male personality warforged. He fell in love with, and is currently in a romantic relationship with, a dwarven woman. Lately their relationship is straining under the stress of adventuring. However, the inability of my character to sexually satisfy his girlfriend has always been a sore spot in their relationship, and he has misidentified this as the reason why his girlfriend has been increasingly distant. He is deeply in love with his girlfriend, and will do anything he thinks he needs to do in order to keep her. If he hadn't been built for war then perhaps he would realize the real reason why his girlfriend is going to leave him. This is going to be a tragic failure, but it will make my warforged grow as a person.

Romance is a powerful tool for character development, and like it or not when two people love each other they tend to want to have sexual intercourse with each other. Of course it is possible to have sexual intercourse with out the use of actual sexual organs, but for a creature to whom sex -- or even love -- is a foreign concept will already have a difficult enough time with mundane sex acts. Also although love without sex is obviously possible most people can not easily completely suppress their libidos; complete abstinence adds unneeded stress to a relationship, masturbation gets boring, and casual sex outside the relationship will increase the chances of feelings of unfaithfulness (especially in monogamous cultures).

Players and DMs who intend to introduce sexual prosthetics for warforged in their game need to have a certain level of maturity. If even one player is not mature enough to handle this subject then it will likely sour the experience for everyone.

Yes, it'd be a challenge. Not necessarily more fun though.

To the OP: You certainly could do something like that, but would it really add anything to the game? (Besides a few dumb jokes that would get old real quick.)I was mostly throwing it out as a joke after seeing all the hub-bub about the changlings being able to change their gender.

However, there would be two good reasons for giving your warforged a gender:

1) Female players could get a chance to play a feminine warforged rather than playing an obviously male warforged that happened to act like a girl. One of the big discussions was whether or not the creation forges would ever create female-looking warforged, and the concensus was that they wouldn't have a reason to make war-machines look like women, so they wouldn't. With the warforged gender components, that discussion would be moot. A female player just starts the game saying: "I'm a female personality warforged that has the female gender component upgrade."

2) Warforged could have a romantic relationship with another species (just no babies...unless maybe you find some sort of artifact-grade component, or use a Wish spell or whatever).

Actually, I think I saw a picture of a warforged once that looked pretty much female, but I may have been mistaken.

there are several.

theres the one that was dropped from S:COT that edy describes as the 'Hookerbot 3000' as well as one he did that looks a lot better as a feminine warforged.

there may be others.

When I think of warforged personalities, I think of Data from Star Trek: the Next Generation. That, in turn reminds me of the "encounter" in the first season between Data & Lt. Tasha Yar...

I'd say that while Warforged wouldn't necessarily be made to look female, they wouldn't exactly have a reason to look male either.

That said, I'm surprised the Reforged hasn't come up in this thread (no... I most certainly NOT intend the pun). It would sort of make sense that a Reforged would sort of... match its mental gender.

Whenever I describe 'Forged, I always try to play up that they're physically androgenous. I make it a point to throw in features and affectations of both genders, and to really drive it home I always initially describe them using "it" (I start using "he" or "she" depending on what my players use). If I want to give a 'Forged a specific gender I reveal it through personality and mannerisms (and different pronouns). This works reasonably well in my campgaign, without introducing the ridiculousness factor I daresay breast and ***** (am I allowed to use those words? :P Edit: Apparently not.) components would.

2) Warforged could have a romantic relationship with another species (just no babies...unless maybe you find some sort of artifact-grade component, or use a Wish spell or whatever).
Personally, this has never been a big deal in any of the games I've played or DM'd. Sure, part of it may be that some of the players are too immature for such things, but despite that I suspect that the other players (like myself) simply don't feel any inclination to roleplay a serious romantic relationship.

I'm with G.D.D. on this one. B4 i bought the book i figured that the reforged would gain a true gender. I mean, the reforge can heal damage naturally, their senses get an upgrade (in the picture hes eating an apple!), wouldn't it be natural for them to develope other new...sensations ;) . warforged become reforged to enhance there living traits, and almost all humanoid creatures can enjoy such things, so you'd figure they'd try to compensate for that. Either way i dunno about components, but a benifit of the reforged class, definetly.

A few things to consider. Sentient humanoid beings are strange, even in the real world, especially when it comes to a subject as sensitive as (this). Fetishes and fears are across such a broad spectrum, and this is in a world where other humanoids don't exist.

That being said, it's likely that there's at least one person would be interested in seeing a warforged "modified" to appease their... I don't know... warforged-philia? It doesn't have to have anything to do with reproduction, or love, for that matter. Oftentimes, it has to do with power. While warforged are "free", some of them are still practically slaves. And, who's to say that they're only good for waging war.

(On a more horrific note, no doubt there's a few less savory members of the Blood of Vol and whatnot that probably use their former shock troops - the undead - for similar purposes).

Then of course, there's the warforged that might actually discover love, and might want to express that love in a biological way (the aformentioned "Data" situation above). They've made "toys" for 4000 years in real life, there's no doubt that they'd have some version of them on Eberron. Really not far of a stretch...

As for adding anything to the game? Well, that depends ENTIRELY on your players. I personally am lucky enough to have a group to bring in all elements of humanity (warforged...ity?) into a game, no matter how dark. I would never have to go into detail, should a situation like that arise - if you have the kind of players that can understand a situation like that and not giggle like idiots, well, then you have the kind of group where you don't have to go into details anyway.

But, I digress. Pretty much perpetually.

I suspect that the other players (like myself) simply don't feel any inclination to roleplay a serious romantic relationship.I totally agree; I can't imagine this discussion would affect the majority of players or campaigns. When I read that changelings can change their gender and alternate between impregnating others and getting impregnated, my first reaction was "what kind of campaigns are you guys running?!??" But like some have already said in this thread, some characters have another life besides breaking into people's basements and killing giant bugs.
