| Glupinickname02-24-05, 03:05 PM | Back in 1998. I installed demo level from this game and immidiately fell in love with the it. Of course, it didn't actually *work* because I didn't had 3-D Card in the computer at the time but that didn't stop me from admiring the steampunkish main menu. :) Anyway, sometime later I got the complete game. It's main character, cynical sneaky Rogue named Garrett, was trained among the Keepers. Keepers used their powers of subterfuge and stealth to preserve the balance of the forces in the city. The City itself was dark and foreboding place, similar to London at the start of the First Industrial Revolution, except for the existence of magic. The story revolved about eccentric rich man named Constantine who hired Garret to obtain for him an artefact known as the Eye. But what the story *really* revolved about was old grudge between Trickster, mad god of nature and Hammerites, fanatically lawfull sect that worshiped Master Builder, god of artifice and forging. Long time ago Hammerites defeated Trickster and tamed the wilderness with their crafts and work. Now, Trickster here sees this as defilement of nature and now seeks revenge. I was just thinking yesterday what a wonderfull setting Eberron is when I can easily introduce Thief's story to it. So, I was interested has anyone tried to do this yet? Eberron definitely supports the dark and cynical feel of the game. Sharn esentially is City, with it's corruption i filth. Instead of Hammerites I could use Church of the Silver Flame because they can be as unpleasant as Hammerites in their defense of all things "proper and decent". On the other hand, Children of the Winter or Ashbound could easly fill the shoes of the mad nature worshipers who look upon Sharn's stone towers and it's pollution as abomination in the eyes of the nature. The Keepers…. Well, The Chamber would fit in nice in that role: mysterious secret society that uses Draconic Prohepcy to preserve the balance in the city and continent. The fact that they are actually dragons is a very nice twist to it. What I like even more is that I can actually find individual *levels* of "Thief: the Dark Project" in Sharn. Best example: one of the levels takes place in the remains of the ancient city buried below the modern one. This Lost City belonged to the once mighty civilisation that was destroyed in unexplained cataclysm. Now, it's remains are half – sunk in the rivers of lava deep in the gigantic system of caves beneath the present City. After reading description of underground beneath Sharn I rolled with laughter beacuse somebody was obviously playing "Thief". :) All in all, I'm not sure will I actually do this because I would much more prefer to build my own campaign story instead of blindly following existing one but, still, it is definitely fun for me to notice similarities between the game and the setting. |
