| Evilmonster01-15-07, 09:47 PM | Have any of your players ever done someting so out of left field that you can't even respond for a few minutes? Last session Dom, cleric of the host, was fretting about how low on funds he was getting. He sold some of the scrolls of Cure light wounds he'd made a few sessions before knowing that the church frounds on that sorta thing. Then he tells me he want's to find someone interested in a "Glowing Bottle of Magic Wine". Ok, so I know he's trying to rip someone off, but what the hell. I tell him to roll a Gather Info to try and find someone willing to be suckered. He gets a 20, plus his ranks and everything was alittle over 30. So I tell him he finds himself talking with a little old widow. I ask him to explain to the old lady what the magic wine does. "It will allow you to speak with the gods for one night a year and insure you always do well in business." :uh-huh: So, I blink a few times and ask for a Bluff check, another 20. I roll for the old lady and roll a 2. So the old lady decides she can empty out most of her retirement and offeres 5,000 gold. Finaly Dom starts to feel guilty and tells her she can have it for 300 gold. Which makes her suspisious because that's very cheep for someting that lets you talk to gods, and she starts to back away. I think we can let this all slide away and get back to the story. But nope, Dom casts Hold fricken Person on the poor old broad and takes 10 gold (no idea how he came up with that figgure) and leaves the bottle at her feet. :mymy: So, I'm figgureing out how the coppers are gonna respond to her story when he passes a note to the Barbarian who reads it and responds with "So, you want me to take her out?" The Paladin over hears some of this and they break thier plans inorder to keep her from spliting heads. I ask him just what was in the bottle. "Alchimests Fire, I thought I could sell it to some goblin thief or something. You know, I make some money and get rid of an evil jerk all at once." :OMG! : Ok, I could almost see that, but then leaving the bottle with her anyway, then trying to get the barbarian to go back and rob her blind, and still leave her with the bottle!? :looloo: |
| Paulon01-15-07, 09:59 PM | Send them to the Forgotten Freedom. They should fit in just fine as redshirts. |
| Kaizer_Ryu01-15-07, 10:17 PM | Redshirts? These screwballs would make fine Scum material. :D |
| Alex_01-15-07, 10:27 PM | I was a chaotic neutral Talenta Plains Halfling. Our party was in a Cyran community in the Talenta Plains and my character was very upset with the fact that these city-folk had brought their corruption and greed into his people's sacred homeland. During his brief stint there, he had already seen and heard of acts of corruption amonst law enforcement. So our party get's arrested under suspicion of murder and apprehended on murder charges. They find a kukri looking exactly like mine in the victim. Already my character has taken a defiant stance and would rather die than admit to such a claim and be judged by what he feels is an inferior and corrupt system. And to top it off, one of the people interrogating me was an Elf (favored enemy). So I spit in their faces and refused to talk. Can't believe I made it out of that one. I honestly believed my character was going to get hung or locked away forever. Only the Paladin's word and good standing with higher ups saved my skin. |
| Kamikaze Chicken01-16-07, 12:28 PM | in my first ever eberron adventure, we foun dourselves in the mounrland. We happened upon a battle field, and decided to capitalize on the amount of weapons found lying about. Knowing that no trader would in their right mind buy something from this cursed land, we decided to field test the weapons for possession and the such. So we set up a protection from evil, and started lobbing swords back and forth through it. Well we got our wish about 10 minutes later when some devilk popped out of a sword, and promptly possessed the warforged in our group. We didt want to fight, and instead ending up drawing from a deck of many things.... did i mention that we are all third level? yeah it went kind of nuts after that, i drew so many times that in the end I had a -1 to all my saves, to fight death, and had my soul imprisoned on their home plane. For reasons un known my artificer heir of cainith, promised the devil his first born if he could get his soul back. the DM just kind of stared at me. but i didnt seem to care.. my intent was obviously get out of trouble, then kill the demon or devil ro what ever it was. Any who.. that was probably one of those 'you say what?!?!" moments for my dm. KAMIKAZE! :chicken: |
| androkguz01-16-07, 09:43 PM | Once, I was on an elf party. I was a wizard and our mission was to find the chief of an orc band into their fortress and to kill him and/or to steal his staff of dragon command (my group's first campaing...). So we found a way to hide into the base but we didn't knew where the chief was. I wanted to try my new Alter Self spell so I turned into an orc and got inside a bar to ask for the chief. But then we found out that gather info took 1d4+1 hour while my alter self would last for 30min... So I aborted the plan... or at least I tried. A drunken orc with which I had stablished a conversation followed me and into my party fellows. The orc started to scream "Elfs! Elfs!!" So here is where my master had his moment.. I had a lot on bluff and a good charisma so I told him that there was nothing there, that he was imagining. My party friends started to wave strangely and say "we are ghosts...". The bluff was so well and he was so drunk that he actually believed it.... |

| Fallenangel35901-16-07, 11:23 PM | I once fought someone in mellee combat, and had a scythe, and I spent my action to ready an action to swing once, and then move back 5 feet, whenever anyone tried to swing at me Did that repeatedly they couldn't touch me |
| Lara_Flynn01-19-07, 01:12 PM | Forgotten Forge - House Cannith Foundry All but one character entered the building by climbing up the wall and down again. A few unlucky rolls for the party and a lot of lucky rolls for me and the characters were near a complete defeat. There was still one defender (full health) left and all characters were at 1-2 health. The warmage (standing on the wall and out of spells) decided that it was time for something stupid and hurled himself against the Iron Defender (expanding an action point). The Defender lost his balance and grapple was initiated. Enough time for the other characters to actually take a shelf and crush the defender with it. The warmage escaped (barely) and thus saved the day. Not truly a "WHAT?!"-situation for me since my player's know that I like strange ideas but still unusual. |
| ohako7901-20-07, 12:00 AM | How's this: we're in Thrane, and a new Silver Flame Pontiff is being publicly voted for. We get hired to do legwork for one of the candidates, who puts us up in rooms at a local inn. I'm a warforged artificer. My bed has...bedsprings...metal frame...hmm...I get to work trying to build an illicit printing press, aka the Calumny Engine. Sadly, the rest of the party sticks with the line, 'We need to find the monster in this whole mess, and fight it', rather than just trying to pull off real smear tactics. Oh well. |
| Need_A_Life01-21-07, 09:23 AM | "I dive off the platform" Said in Skyway (Sharn), while trying to escape a group of guards. A warforged falling a few miles into the ground (no featherfall, botched my roll to activate it in time) and ending up down in the Cogs at EXACTLY 1hp (20d6 falling damage; DM rolled low). |
| Nived01-21-07, 09:55 AM | Got away didn't he? |
| goblin_pride01-21-07, 05:01 PM | Got away didn't he? Even if he didn't, Dolurrh is technically getting away, isn't it? |
| Raziel_Brokodar01-21-07, 09:17 PM | the archery combat styled ranger of the game I'm dming in the foundry climbed the building, and jumped down... nobody else had climbed the building and he was alone (with his elven consitution penalty reduced 9 hit points) with the 2 iron defenders hahahahahahahaha too funny the player said the following "ooooh ****.... help!!!!!!" |
| Salla01-22-07, 02:23 AM | "I'm just gonna go Swashbuckler 20." ... WHAT? |
| Edymnion01-22-07, 12:09 PM | I once fought someone in mellee combat, and had a scythe, and I spent my action to ready an action to swing once, and then move back 5 feet, whenever anyone tried to swing at me Did that repeatedly they couldn't touch meDoesn't work that way, as you can only ready one action. Making an attack and making a 5' step are two seperate actions, meaning you could either attack, OR step away. You can't do both. |
| Edymnion01-22-07, 12:12 PM | "I dive off the platform" Said in Skyway (Sharn), while trying to escape a group of guards. A warforged falling a few miles into the ground (no featherfall, botched my roll to activate it in time) and ending up down in the Cogs at EXACTLY 1hp (20d6 falling damage; DM rolled low). I'm sorry, that just slayed me. I can so totally see a complete Wile E. Coyote moment where the featherfall disc fails to activate, the WF holds up a little "Uh oh" sign, then does a slide whistle fall all the way down into a little puff of dust, leaving a hole in the perfect shape of his outline as he gets up, dusts himself off, says "Excuse me", and walks away rubbing his head. |
| Cifer01-23-07, 12:14 PM | Doesn't work that way, as you can only ready one action. Making an attack and making a 5' step are two seperate actions, meaning you could either attack, OR step away. You can't do both. It was discussed in another thread. The problem is that 5-footing is a non-action. You can take a 5-foot step as part of your readied action, but only if you don’t otherwise move any distance during the round. It was basically agreed upon the following: "Yes, the tactic is RAW legal. However, it's also cheesy and gamebreaking as hell and should make every other player and DM want to bash your skull in with the next available folding chair, which is why we agree not to do it." |
| DoveArrow01-23-07, 01:23 PM | We were playing EMH-14 House of Madness from the Mark of Heroes campaign. At one point, while we were in the asylum, the wardens order the patients to attack us or die. Afraid for their lives, the patients start to move towards us and the kobold in our party shouts out "I fireball them!" Later, I drew a picture on the mat of the kobold looking confused up at the fighter, who is shouting "WHYY?!" while a pile of bodies burn in the background. |
| Mayor_McFunkenstein01-24-07, 12:40 AM | I was running a campaign a while back where the pcs are in Sharn and they are hired to solve a murder (yea, I know, not the most original plot hook). Anyway, they go to the victims house and in a secret room find a sword wrapped up in a cloak that turns out to be a cloak of misdirection. Suspicious, they attempt to identify the sword, it comes up negative but the sword has a lot of Celestial runes on it. The gnome, who works for House Sivis but is not dragonmarked, goes to the library and attempts to research the sword. From deciphering the Celestial runes, the gnome comes up with the theory that the sword is actually the sword of Tira Miron, which was used to slay the Coatl and the Demon and thus cleanse the Silver Flame. (Thus the sword is the Silver Flame equivalent of the Holy Grail). So what does the gnome do, seeing as none of the other party members are there? She takes it to her House Sivis boss and gives it to him... I sat there for a good five minutes and said, "You do what?!" That is the only time I've EVER had a PC voluntarily give away an artifact. The other players wanted to slug the girl but she was all "Well thats what my gnome would do" |
| Ravenscroft01-24-07, 12:47 AM | I want to know how the Gnome got away with taking a sword into a library to research the runes on it? |
| goblin_pride01-24-07, 12:47 AM | That is the only time I've EVER had a PC voluntarily give away an artifact. The other players wanted to slug the girl but she was all "Well thats what my gnome would do" And people wonder why I tend to shoot the gnome first? |
| Nived01-24-07, 12:49 AM | Well... On the bright side you just gained a big steaming pile of favor with House Sivis... having them in your corner is NOT a bad thing. Magic short lawyers... like mini-Johnny Cohrans... Which makes me wonder what the Eberron equivalant of the Chewbacca Defense would be? But I digress.... not a terrible thing.... unless you know they're the killers. |
| Salla01-24-07, 02:23 AM | Which makes me wonder what the Eberron equivalant of the Chewbacca Defense would be? Shifter Defense. :D |
| OzyBurrfoot01-24-07, 01:10 PM | It was basically agreed upon the following: "Yes, the tactic is RAW legal. However, it's also cheesy and gamebreaking as hell and should make every other player and DM want to bash your skull in with the next available folding chair, which is why we agree not to do it." Actually its not game breaking, all the opponents would have needed to do was send a second opponent after you stepped back from the first one. Once your readied action has been taken, you dont take it again just because the "if" situation occures again. |
| MagicMouth01-24-07, 02:28 PM | Which makes me wonder what the Eberron equivalant of the Chewbacca Defense would be?Shifter Defense. :D  |
| Cifer01-24-07, 03:34 PM | Actually its not game breaking, all the opponents would have needed to do was send a second opponent after you stepped back from the first one. Completely taking one enemy out of the combat feels gamebreaking to me. Picture a duel with this rule in mind: Both characters ready actions to attack and five-foot backwards as soon as the other one moves, for moving oneself would just mean getting hit -> both wait, noone does anything. |
| OzyBurrfoot01-24-07, 03:46 PM | Completely taking one enemy out of the combat feels gamebreaking to me. I wouldnt say that he is completely taken out of the battle, after all, if one of the opponents moves to flank the scythe-weilding PC, his only choice for taking the 5-foot step would still place him adjecent to one or both of the foes. Alternatively, you could back him into a corner and stop him from backing away. It does require some creativity to get around, but by no means does that mean its game-breaking. Not in my eyes anyways. Picture a duel with this rule in mind: Both characters ready actions to attack and five-foot backwards as soon as the other one moves, for moving oneself would just mean getting hit -> both wait, noone does anything. Well yes, in a duel, two characters doing this would be pretty stupid. But if they are both just standing there, either someone else is going to get involved and force them to start acting, or someones likely to fall over from sleep deprivation or hunger pains. It'd be no different than a duel where both members chose to take nothing but Total Defense actions. |
| Cifer01-24-07, 04:41 PM | It'd be no different than a duel where both members chose to take nothing but Total Defense actions. No. If both opponents use total defense, one could gain an advantage by breaking this cycle and attacking. With readied actions, your situation gets worse when you stop doing so. It's basically game theory: You have two options (fight or ready), and one of them (ready) is always better for you. There are four ways a round can go: Noone readies an action - both fight as usual. You ready an action - you get an attack in, your enemy doesn't. Obviously better than *noone readies an action*. Your enemy readies an action - you approach him, but can't hit him while he hits you. You both ready an action - nothing happens. Obviously better than *Your enemy readies an action* I wouldnt say that he is completely taken out of the battle, after all, if one of the opponents moves to flank the scythe-weilding PC, his only choice for taking the 5-foot step would still place him adjecent to one or both of the foes. So you need two opponents to rein him in. Alternatively, you could back him into a corner and stop him from backing away. One move action, one AoO incurred and he is out of the corner again. That's one AoO versus one attack you incur every single turn you try to corner him. |
| UnderworldLord01-24-07, 10:36 PM | So when I use say, hold person, on him? This isn't much worse than the half ogre with a spiked chain theory, except that it can do much more than just attack with its readied action. So what about an opponent with a ranged weapon? Maybe a magic caster? There are plenty of ways around it, just get creative. |
| Nived01-24-07, 11:33 PM | Well if someone insists on this gordian's knot of battle... Just lob throwing axes at them. Actually that answer works for most situations. |
| sooperspook01-25-07, 12:11 AM | I see nothing wrong with it. Haven't you ever seen a samurai movie where the two samurai stand there for ages without moving until one of them breaks and attacks? What did you think they were doing? Or how about a cowboy movie, two gunslingers stand there readying actions to shoot if the other guy twitches wrong. Or martial arts movies where one guy is attacking and the other guy just counters and moves. |
| OzyBurrfoot01-25-07, 10:04 AM | Exactly. It's a valid combat strategy, not a game breaking rules loop hole. |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-25-07, 10:49 AM | Well, just last night I did something pretty out there. Left the rest of the group slack-jawed. Not an Eberron campaign, though. It was Planescape. We were in Dispater's tower, and our cleric fell. Down the shaft that ran a good length of the tower. In response, my githzerai psychic warrior manifests freedom of movement, psionic, and jumps after her. He rockets down the tower, free of air resistance and terminal velocity, catches her, and dispells freedom of movement. The high speeds mean they're now on fire, and there's a sonic boom exploding through Dispater's tower. With the aid of a few powers and the catfall racial ability, we survive slamming through into the next room, where the rest of the party has now teleported to. The cleric had two major wounds. I had landed on my feet and could honestly say, "It's only a flesh wound" in response to the unanimous, "You're still alive?!" That was just awesome. What do I do next? I dig the frog out of my pack. It's still alive. It was our ticket out of Hell, so we would've been screwed if it was dead. |
| OzyBurrfoot01-25-07, 10:54 AM | I'm really curious about the frog, but a little afraid of the answer.... :P |
| Omnirahk, half-Rahkshi01-25-07, 10:20 PM | I'm really curious about the frog, but a little afraid of the answer.... :P Planescape. According to the DM, there's a two-way portal to Dis that can only be opened with a freshly killed frog. |
| Evilmonster01-25-07, 11:33 PM | Just wondering, how many here are in a group that finishes 90% of all violent incounters by setting fire to something/someone? I swear I can only recall 2 or 3 incounters in which my players didn't burn down something or set the bad guy on fire. |
| goblin_pride01-25-07, 11:38 PM | Just wondering, how many here are in a group that finishes 90% of all violent incounters by setting fire to something/someone? Closer to 75% but that's a bit too high, isn't it? Someone forgot to tell the sorceror that Sharn is chock full of flammables, someone forgot to tell the sorceror that flaming sphere and draft animals are a bad combo, and someone forgot to tell the other gobbo PC that flaming oil isn't exactly the brightest way to finish off an enemy quickly (I must admit it was bright, but said enemy fleeing through rooms full of flammables wasn't so much fun). |
| Evilmonster01-26-07, 12:05 AM | 4th level group. On a lightning rail coach. Vampire demanding they turn over the Rod of Lordly Might that was stolen from a museum and reclaimed by the PC's. They're horrably out matched and I intended for them to turn it over thus kicking off part two of the adventure. What do they do? Douse the whole dame place in oil and light it up! Sure they drove the vampire off, but they'll be paying off the damage for the next four years. |
| Nived01-26-07, 12:31 AM | Just wondering, how many here are in a group that finishes 90% of all violent incounters by setting fire to something/someone? Heh, the joke amongst my gaming group is... Plan A: See if we can talk our way out of it. Blan B: Kill it with fire! Plan C: Set everything on fire and run away. |
| Salla01-26-07, 02:04 PM | Closer to 75% but that's a bit too high, isn't it? Burn Baby Burn ... DISCO INFERNO! |
| goblin_pride01-26-07, 09:00 PM | Burn Baby Burn ... DISCO INFERNO! As a DM I actually did this too. My intrepid and semi-heroic party attacked a group of three orcs trying to get a wagon unstuck. Not terribly difficult, but when their mates came back to help get the third supply wagon unstuck, things got interesting. The Necromancer of the bunch opens up combat casting defensive spells which tips off the Orc leader (A druid), who torches the bugbear fighter with a flaming sphere. The necro sees this and decides that hiding in the supply wagon is his best option, at which point the orc druid figures that they're already down five orcs and keeping this goblin scum from getting the supplies is the best course of action. So the druid promptly tosses another flaming sphere into the wagon and begins trying to pull a fighting retreat. It still somewhat amazes me that the same player in the exact same situation concerning draft animals and fire still couldn't make the connection. I'm hoping his next character is a little less obnoxious. |
| spyone01-29-07, 11:18 AM | Just wondering, how many here are in a group that finishes 90% of all violent incounters by setting fire to something/someone? Well, except for trolls, we almost never used fire except for light. Unless you count my (1st edition) halfling druid, who took full advantage of immunity to fire: he slept in the campfire and often began a melee by pouring lampoil all over himself and then touching himself with a torch. (See, on the one hand, maybe being fought by a guy who is on fire will scare them, but even if that doesn't work I don't have my hand tied up and don't have to worry about a light source. ;) ) Our DM used to run the policy that if something worked well and was used too often, the monsters would start using it too. One party made several forays into a cave complex after the monsters that lived there, and had been using "thrown fire" of various sorts to good effect. Then they started into a new section, and they threw a few of their little firebombs ahead. And there are 2 guards who clearly heard the party coming, and there's a storeroom just up a flight of stairs from where they are posted. And one of the things listed as being in that storeroom is a barrel full of lamp oil. So, the two guards run up to the store room and roll the barrel out into the corridor, smash a hole with an axe, and then roll it down the stairs at the party. And then they light the trail of oil that leads down the stairs. (Probably threw a torch, too. I wasn't there.) The party's consensus was that "teaching the orcs that fire is a good weapon was a bad plan". They killed any orc that had learned that, and then vowed to remember that if the same plan works over and over, the surviving monsters notice, so you need to keep changing the plan even when it works. Especially when it works. :) |

Anyway, when I was still very new to the game (2nd edition ADND, Forgotten Realms) I joined a game with a DM who is actually now one of my players. Anyhow I was playing a worshipper of Selune and I had read that she was the diety of good lycanthrophes so I had told my DM I was out looking to get bitten by one so I could join the club (As I said I was new to the game). The DM not used to stuff like that went with it anyway for the time being. After some adventuring we killed an ogre or some monsterous humanoid and I told my DM, since we hadn't eaten yet I cut of the ogres arm and started eating it. The DM simple packed his stuff and left. Wierdest thing ever, though now we do get along great :) |
| jedi818701-30-07, 10:44 AM | we were playing a FR game and we were traveling through goblin caves. We see a goblin and kill it. Then we find out that it was a goblin nanny. So now we have ten goblin children that we don't know what to do with. THe evil people wanted to just kille them, some of us said leave them, but one party member refused to let us kill them or leave them. So we needed to keep him we took the goblin kids with us. THe DM obviously wasn't expecting this as he began to slowly pick them off in the later battles in extreme an onorthodox manners. It was so funny to see how irritated he was. |

So taking the generals holy symbol in hand i walk out into the middle of the field, and right as I was going to barter for passage, our knight pc said "Hes going to betray us" which killed my train of thought and made me shout "I KILLED YOUR GENERAL!!!" our dm looked at me for a whole minute or two in awe struck dumbfoundedness. My dragon shaman died that battle. And I must now live down "I killed your general" In Order of the Stick speak, "Nice Diplomacy Check." :) |
| panjadin45601-31-07, 01:09 PM | Closer to 75% but that's a bit too high, isn't it? Someone forgot to tell the sorceror that Sharn is chock full of flammables, someone forgot to tell the sorceror that flaming sphere and draft animals are a bad combo, and someone forgot to tell the other gobbo PC that flaming oil isn't exactly the brightest way to finish off an enemy quickly (I must admit it was bright, but said enemy fleeing through rooms full of flammables wasn't so much fun). In my group it's more around 50-75%, depending on the disposition of our players that night. This, however, is going to change in the next campaign we run, since i just got the Expanded Psionics Handbook and found the Pyrokineticist prestige class :schemes: |
| Ellorin02-01-07, 10:09 AM | So, here are my PCs in the middle of Khyber. A war is on: an army of aberrations versus the monstrous(grimlocks, minotars, medusas etc) inhabitants of the city of Kresseleck versus a nearby Neogi colony. The PCs are after the latter and the old Noldrun vault they are based at and decide that making some allies is imperative. I thought that they would pick a side, rut the other and crush the Neogi fighting alongsde the aberrations or Kresseleck. How foolish of me. Thus, the half-daelkyr (cleric of the Traveler) enters the aberrations' camp, while the others pose as his slaves. After some serious bluffing they get enlisted(being a famous 13th-lvl character helps) and ordered to assassinate the enemy general, the half-fiend minotaur Horrash. The first Kresseleck patrol they meet is being slaughtered by a Khyber fiend. After saving the remaining troll, they manage to get at his good side(rather easy) and pose as anti-unnnatural crusaders. The troll asks them to join him to his camp and they play along. In the camp, they get an audience with Horrash himself. The ranger and the cleric, following the wizard's plan, convince him of their good intentions( a narrow thing: Horrash was a powerful and wise knight. Still, they were rolling wonders and roleplaying very well too. The grateful troll sergeant was a plus.) and get their first mission: search the nearby area and inform them of the aberrant army's location. If they are not too close, the PCs must return immediately: as long as it is safe, Kresseleck's army some make a run and assault the weak Neogi colony: after occupied, the vault can become a great defensive location, not to mention the rich mine nearby. 15 minutes after they leave the camp, the party meets an illithid group. They are aware that the PCs have entered their enemies' camp and demand explanations( simultaneously they try to read the PC's mind, but without any success). The half-daelkyr gives them a twisted them of Horrash's plan and suggests that the aberrant army should seize the vault first, starting RIGHT NOW. It worked. After that, they immediately run to Kresseleck's camp( you WHAT?) and tell Horrash that their common enemies are getting closer but not alarmingly so: some quick marching will give them the vault. They managed to coordinate things in such a way, that both armies arrived simultaneously. In a nutshell, they manipulated both armies, they managed to enter the vault first and, after the battle had ended and (most of them) survived a bloody duel with furious Horrash, they destroyed a side, they greatly weakened the other nearby forces and gained not only some grateful followers(former neogi slaves) but a large part of Korran's Maw as well. They won a war that yesterday they weren't even aware of. |
| Cifer02-01-07, 01:35 PM | @Ellorin So much for triplecrossing, hm? |
| OzyBurrfoot02-01-07, 01:45 PM | *snip* They won a war that yesterday they weren't even aware of. Very nice. |
| Nived02-02-07, 11:15 AM | Considering he was a Cleric of the Traveler... makes perfect sense. Silly monsters... don't you know 'Beware the gifts of the Traveler." |
| Rocksa02-10-07, 06:14 PM | I was DM'ing a session where my players were running around Sharn trying to figure out the clues to a journal that lead to a supposed dragonshard stash in the cogs. Anyway, players go into a bar to get some info. A halfling bumps into the player carrying the journal and then tricks some guys into starting a fullblown barfight with the PC's in the middle of it all. PC's make it out, realize that the journal is missing, put two and two together, and end up chasing the pickpocket down. They finally catch the poor guy, get the book back, and the our fighter dangles the halfling over a bridge as skycoaches whizz by under us, demanding information. Long story short, fighter learns what he wants and just drops the halfling. I figure with the skycoaches flying underneath the bridge that there'd be a 1 in 100 chance that the little guy would land on one instead of plummeting to his death, and so it turns out to be the guys lucky day and he manages to land safely and even wave back at the group as he goes off on his merry way. I wish I could say that it all ended there, but it was at this point that the wizard screams out, "I fireball the skycoach". Bad enough, but the fighter and ranger actually leap down onto skycoaches and chase the guy, while the wizard peppers the coach the halfling's on with fireballs and whatever else he can muster, and to top it off, the artificer and rogue are both lobbing alchemist's fire and frost at him. What followed was a pretty amazing chase through the skies of Sharn, which, sadly enough, was wasted on some poor little pickpocket. In the end the group caused enough carnage, death, and collateral damage to be sent to Dreadhold for the rest of their lives, and the campaign had to be scrapped and restarted...without pickpockets. |
| poeticyde02-10-07, 11:06 PM | Two of them, here. In one campaign, the player characters were making a quick retreat from Sharn, having ****** off a guild of hoodlums and having invoked the rage of a dragonmarked house. As they flee, they notice but ignore a raven that flies overhead. When they finally make camp in the wilds, they go to sleep...and when they continue their flight the next day, they are ambushed by archers hiding in the trees! At first it was a slaughter, as the players were not well prepared for such an attack, and then one of my players made a move that literally made my jaw drop. Now, keep in mind that this was only her second time playing DND, and thus far she had remained fairly quiet, playing her half-orc barbarian. When her next turn came, she looked at me and said, "I rage, and then I shake the tree." Everyone in the group just stopped chatting about possible solutions and looked at her, until one of my friends just breathed "Brilliant" under his breath. I recovered, shrugged, and had the archer make a balance check...which came up a one. Down the archer tumbled, taking almost enough falling damage to kill him, a task which was quickly completed by the party. The rest of the encounter consisted of a barbarian running around shaking trees, archers plummetting, and the party picking off the pieces. Oh...and we nicknamed her character "Tree-humper" after that, and in the spirit of humor, she ended up multiclassing as a druid! :D The second incident was with another party if characters. They had been hired to explore a newly unearthed tomb in a section of Qbarra's swamps, that had been drained by drought. Using a party of hired goblins as manual labor, the party were the "Indiana Jones" types, there to investigate, not dig out mud and haul debris. When the goblins finally dug out an entrance to the tomb, the CN Gnome Cleric of the group halts everyone, and declares that, if his spells are to be of any use, everyone must convert to his faith (The Sovereign Host, but including the darker gods as well). Several of the characters immediately balked, and began making arguments about how ridiculous that was, etc, etc. Finally, the party rogue says "Well, I for one won't convert until I see some proof that your gods exist!" At which point the gnome points at a goblin worker, and casts a pillar of flame, incinerating the wee goblin and leaving a smouldering husk. Once everyone picked their jaws off the floor...yeah...they converted. ;) |
| AllWillFall2Me02-11-07, 03:39 AM | I had a halfling rogue character in Eberron, that spawned these moments faster than rabbits make rabbits. First, he entered a tavern with the intent of robbing it. He sits down, and surveys the room. He sees a table of mercenaries. So, he waits until the barkeep isn't looking, and chucks a flask of oil at the torch by the merc's table. It shatters, bursts into flames, and sets two of the 6 men on fire. "Those damn mercs are startin' a fight!" My character yells. Only one merc saw me do it, so he starts screaming at me, "I'll kill you, you runty bastard!" Which didn't help his public acceptance any. Another, drunker mercenary attacks the merc next to him, thinking it's a backstab. SO my character stabs the drunk, and helps the other merc up, declaring "They've gone mad! They're trying to kill you!" By this time the whole room is in a brawl, and burning, so I go upstairs. I go from room to room, yelling that "orcs are burning the place down!" And robbing swiftly emptying rooms. Finally, the last room has a slightly more clever half-orc. He doesn't believe me, so I have my new-found cohort bull rush him out the window. And I toss him a torch. The mob outside sees a half-orc with a torch, and hears me yelling "orc's are burning the place down!" And a good old lynching followed. Later, that same character had grown fond of a monocle he had had made from a crystal he acquired in that heist. He still had the mercenary, as he couldn't kill him, no matter how hard he tried. So, we discover a blue dragon was behind a nefarious plot, and we confront him in his lair. In the battle, my rogue's monocle flew off, and the dragon swallowed it out of the air. So I announce "I follow my monocle." I grapple myself INTO the dragon, and climb to his stomach, searching for my monocle. My merc tries to save me, and gets caught in the dragon's windpipe. The dragon chokes, but manages to blast the merc dead and out. Meanwhile, I find my monocle, and deliberately cut DEEPER into the dragon. I find his heart, and I stab it. He falls over, and the whole party is standing there, dumbstruck, as I burst out of his side, wiping my monocle on my coat. I look at them. "What? It's my monocle." |

| Assassin_of_the_shadow02-11-07, 06:31 PM | Ok so my character is a rogue/assassin lvl 15 and his race is a shade. As my large team and I are searching the town for a good deal on some weapons but he keeps avoiding us. My friend's cleric gets mad and shoots his crossbow at the trader, trying to make him "stop" running. THen he fires 2 more times. So then my other friend's pale master hits the cleric in the back of the head rendering him unconcious:uh-huh: and uses spirit wall to block off the traders path. I am just using shadow stride to catch up with this trader so I could reason with him but the archer in my group fires an arrow and it turns out he's shooting at me. Now the DM and I are getting confused on how everyone in my party is going berserk. Keep in mind I have a big party and when one person gets mad and it affects another party member. Then my other other friend's great rift skyguard swoops in on his griffon and lops the traders head off:eek:. We are all in town during this and there is mass panic and a batallion of guards are sent in to detain us. I stab 3 in the back of the head, 5 in the neck, 7 in the heart and knee one in his kettle. I am lucky enough that I shadow stride to an alley so the guards can't get me.:incog:I then throw my voice so that I sound like a civilian and yell that the assassin went down the next street. I then make a critical hit to the captain slicing his throat out so the other guards are in disarray. By the way shadow stride is my favorite shade feat. My whole team gets arrested and i have to break them out and they all think this is my fault so i am kind of getting second thoughts about letting the out. Sadly we did not aquire those useful weapons because the guards confiscated them so this whole visiting the town thing was a waste and my team went totally loco.:looloo: |
| goblin_pride02-11-07, 07:34 PM | *deleted because it was too snarky and a bit heavy on the flamage* |
| Assassin_of_the_shadow02-11-07, 08:48 PM | How idiotic can you get??? I just finished an adventure where you are supposed to kill an orc warlord and my team goes berserk again. This is a different team from last time except for the dwarf great rift skyguard. Ok so my team of 5 people are going towards this orc warlord's camp and the rest of my team was ambushed by a troop of orc scouts and they fire a hailstorm of flaming arrows and kills the avariell on my team. With my silver poisoned tantos ( long daggers ) I slice open one's throat, throw a hatchet through another's head, and break another's neck with my elbow. Our healer quickly resurects the avariell and the great rift skyguard's griffon eats an orc and soars upward. After we finish the rest of the orcs off except for one to get information from it. The warrior didn't like the answers to the questions we asked it and he started kicking it! I took its information and I said if he was lying I would feed him to the griffon. BUT, the idiotic skyguard knocks him over the head and feeds him to the griffon!!!!!!!!!! :banghead: FINALLY we get to the encampment and I sneak into the main tent and my team thinks it would be fun to attack everything else in the encampment so they do and almost die. Sadly the "great" rift skyguard gets shot with a poison arrow while swooping low to the ground falls off and dies.:ghosted: Then the orc warlord hops atop the griffon and starts flying away. I shadow stride to the closest and tallest tree next to the orc warlord and I take aim with my bow and fire 3 arrows. One hits him in the head, one in the heart, and one on the griffon's face (that was accidental). He was dead before he hit the ground. :elf: Finally our healer healed the rest of the lame group and almost everyone lost 1 level 'cept for me ( but I almost died when the archer shot his bow at an orc warrior and it hit me in the thigh!) |
| alwysbrke02-11-07, 10:16 PM | I am a new DM and also new to Eberron. We are still running the campaign, and things have been quite interesting. I have been running a couple of the modules to get my feet wet and to get the group use to the eberron setting. Well, in Shadows of the Last war, the group had just arrived in the Bloody Market while trying to locate Failin, their contact. Needless to say, the goblin vendor didn't like the way the party was trying to get information without paying for it, and was giving them a snub-nosed time. The human Artificer decided to nonchalantly walk over to the goblins table, and knock it down, then walk away calmly while the goblin called for the guards. Well, half the party died, and the other half were severely injured and just barely made it out of the market alive, while the artificer had found himself a tavern and was sleeping... :) |
| Sturm Jaeger02-13-07, 12:26 AM | Even if he didn't, Dolurrh is technically getting away, isn't it? "Ha ha! Foolish guards! I escaped you into death! Now you'll never catch me!" |
| SolidusSnake02-19-07, 05:55 PM | Well I was once in a party in a party and my character was a FF type Dragoon (We were all level Fifteen) who was a brelish soldier and found out that a prominent general was wanting to start a civil war in order to take power for himself we don't know who the guy is we just know we have to trash his plans, which we do he tries to make a getaway in an airship cause he has some allies in Aundair. We get ourselves an airship and begin chase we finally catch up with the airship and the wizard teleports us onto the ship the party splits up and decides we have to take the airship down we go our separate ways with the wizard taking care of demolition the barbarian taking care of the people and the rouge taking anything shiny that isn't nailed down I ask if i can take the leader they allow me to since i was the only one from breland we go I find the leader I find the boss he gets to monologing about how democracy is a failure I argue for it then we begin our battle. By this time theres all kinds of chaos on the ship with explosins and screams going on everywhere I get the upper hand in the battle he tries to run. I begin chase We come across a gaping hole in the haul that wizard made with debris everywhere the dm said it was difficult terrain now came the crazy part. I ask the Dm if i can jump over the debris and bullrush the boss outside of the ship he says sure. I make my check and gets me a natural twenty HA! The boss goes out of the ship while I celebrate the DM says something that made me turn white. DM:"Ok now make a Reflex Save":) Me:"Um....ok" Rolls a natural 1 Me:"Ah crap" DM:"Ok you fall out with him":D Me:"Double Crap....good thing tha I have a ring of feather fall huh?" DM:"Yes it is make a spot check" Me::confused: "30" DM:"you see the boss floating beside you" Me:"Triple crap......can I engage him in an aerial duel?" DM:"I don't see why not" Thus we began an aerial duel of epic proportions floating down to the ground until I gets me another bright idea. Me:"Can I bullrush him?" DM:"Ok where to" Me:"Below me" DM:"ok make you check" DM & ME rolls DM:"Ok You win" Me:"Ok....I angle my spear to his chest then I.....take off the Ring" DM:"YOU DO WHAT!!!!???" ME:"You heard me" DM:"You know how far up you still are and the chances of you winning are practically non existant right?" Me:"Yes" DM:"Ok do it I'll even let you count this as a charge attack and if you hit it'll be a pin" Me:"Ok" rolls a hit So we plummet down towards the earth my spear piercing the boss' body and him trying to get out from under it were about to hit the ground and then DM:"alright make a jump check" Me:"how come?" DM:"who knows maybe you get lucky":) Me:"ok" rolls a natural 20 DM:"Roll it again" Me rolls a natural 20 DM:"wha but? R, roll it again" Me:rolls a natural 20 "damn I have never rolled that good" DM::eek: Me:"what? DM::eek: Me:"what happens" DM:"You land in the middle of a town and create an earth shattering crater that topples a few houses you spear is dug into the earth through the boss' body and it appears as if you can't pull it out again everyone looks at you like the've seen a god descended from the heavens and you are unharmed" Me: Damn DM:"you went and turned my game into a shounen" and that is probably the greatest thing I have or ever will do in a campaign |
| leiff02-19-07, 06:17 PM | I'm a character in this eberron game but I still found them funny. We were in the goblin ancient ruins under Sharn, and we needed to find this chalice in payment for getting a PC raised. There was a door leading around to another tower, however the bridge was broken and the door on the other side was bricked up. The barbarian decided to leap across the chasm and attack the wall to hopefully make a handhold to stay in place. The GM described it like one of those obstances from MXC where the dude jumps into the wall hoping to stick, except the barbarian didn't have velcro. ----------------------------------------------------------- Another story was when we a Colassal dragon was destroy Wroat. We could not defeat the thing in direct combat but we had a ballista bolt that was enhanted to kill it so we had to run across the city avoiding the dragon to try to get to a Ballista. So me (ranger) and two other PCs (wizard, binder) were stuck in a room and the dragon was really close. We saw a sewer entrance about 60 feet from room and we knew we needed to get there to escape. Figuring I had the approciate ranks in stealth skills to avoid detection I decided to lure the dragon away while the rest of the group with no stealth skills could safetly get to the entrance. So I stealth into an alley and climb up a building to see if I could spot it, and find the dragon diving directly at me. Afterwards I had decided that the idea was not the most well thought out. In the end I barely survived. I was at extremely low HPs and almost at the entrance and it got to breathe. Even with my crazy reflex check and evasion I didn't make it (since it was a collasal dragon), so one of the PCs stepped in front of me to give me the cover bonus which put my reflex check over the DC allowing me to live. That was a crazy intense session. |
| UnderworldLord02-19-07, 07:53 PM | So did the other guy make it? |
| Eiries02-19-07, 08:04 PM | DM:"you went and turned my game into a shounen" That is in-freaking-credible! Wow... Keep that d20 close, it's clearly blessed by the gods of gaming! |
| goblin_pride02-19-07, 08:57 PM | That is in-freaking-credible! Wow... Keep that d20 close, it's clearly blessed by the gods of gaming! Nah, just proves that Luck plays Eberron. |
| SolidusSnake02-19-07, 09:39 PM | Yeah I never ever rolled like that until I played Ebberon, needless to the other didn't make it. But the Kicker is that we were in Aundair territory and by that time the parties reputation was legendary with me being known as one the most loyal and powerful soldiers ever to be in the Breland army. It ends with me running for my life while the Aundair military mobilizes to catch me or kill me. And I didn't even get my spear back. |
| goblin_pride02-20-07, 12:13 AM | And I didn't even get my spear back. Get your butt in gear, get back across that border and get that spear back. |
| SolidusSnake02-20-07, 12:35 AM | Oh yes I intend to once I reunite with the party we are gonna tear up Aundair something fierce |
| jonci02-21-07, 11:41 PM | I have a few minor stories. I was DMing the Forgotten Forge adventure. I had a pretty unusual group of players that had a +10 ability to give me a headache. It first begins with the Fighter that doesn't use any weapons, just his shield. Remember this guy, it is important. The adventure goes okay until the fight in the sewers. The shield fighter is the last one down the stairs, so he gets the pleasure of the Warforged rogue. The others prepare to fight to two shifters racing down the sewer towards them. The shielder goes into Total defense in the stairwell, keeping the Warforged completely trapped and unable to injure him. Down in the muck, an archery fighter launches an attack on a shifter. Archer: "I roll a 20!" Me: "Confirm threat." Archer: "I roll another 20." Me: "Damn, roll insta-kill." Archer: "19." Me: "At least you didn't insta-kill. Roll damage." Archer: "8 times 3 for crit." Me: "Damnit. Fine, you just sniped him in the brain and kill him. The other shifter runs for his life." Then the archer goes ahead and kills the warforged who is still trying to get to a Total defense shielder with his little rapier. They get through the whole fight unharmed. They managed to get into the cavern and now it is time to face-off against the bettle swarm. So far this group has managed to take on two fights without any trouble. What's a simple random encounter? Well they know "Fire good". Except no torches, just lanterns. So they make the decision to throw a pint of oil and ignite it. Well bettle swarms attack by covering the victim, so now there is a flaming bettle swarm covering them. Eventually they run, find the old catedral and rest up. One of them finds the potion of cure wounds inside, but doesn't know that's what it is of course. Me: "You find a bowl with a liquid inside." Him: "I pour it into my waterskin." Me: "Huh?!" I'm a new DM...there's no rule about mixing a potion with water! So I improvise and give 1 HP per drink of water, which they manage to figure out and recover a little from their bettle burns. However, they don't rest for the night. Instead charge forward to the forge. Well mister Shield decides to remove his shield so he can climb up, and swiftly dives into the hole before anyone else has climbed up, too. Well it was funny seeing the shieldless wonder running to the door screaming for help. It took them three days of full rest in that forge and the remainer of the magic water to recover from the beating of those iron defenders. It was a sad and patetic battle. At least they managed to defeat the final boss, except for the shield guy who, despite actually doing the most damage, tasted a critical hit and died. (I so didn't kill him on purpose.) Between this adventure and the next, I let the characters have three weeks to do whatever they want within the city. Three were productive enough to work for a little extra cash. One decided that getting laid was the way to celebrate. So I broke out the BoEF for a few rules. Almost scored a pregnacy on him, too! The next adventure starts at the tavern. Normally the players should group around the NPC, right? One decides he wants to stand by the door and keep watch. DAMNIT! Well the next event to occur, the door is supposed to be kicked in. So he got thrown on his butt. They decide to take the ship to get to Darguun. Fun for me, since I get to throw a bunch of skeletons at them. Well it seems their extremes in good and bad luck turns to good, because the cleric destroyed seven skeletons in a single turning! Next is Darguun, where the cleric's diplomatic skills equals lifting the goblin up and threatening him. Good thing they know how to bribe the guards, too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next story involves the Forgotten Forge again, this time I'm a player. The DM sucked at recruiting, so it was just three characters. We barely get through the sewers thanks to me Charm Person-ing a shifter and convincing it the warforged kill his friend. Standing at the doorway to the cavern, we end up triggering the acid trip. Okay, we know the door is bad. How do we resolve this? Cleric: "I kick the door!" Everyone else: "WHAT?!" Now the cleric and myself are dying. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- I join a new group of players that, besides the DM and myself, are newbies at D&D. They also have cursed dice. We are heading into a goblin cave to clean the place out. We find the first trap in the cave, a simple pitfall. The rogue goes to disable it. Instead, he fails and triggers it falling in. This is the first domino. The cleric goes to grab him and rolls a 1 on her reflex save. In goes domino 2. The fighter tries to grab her and fails, domino 3. The druid tries to grab him, well three people on the chain....domino 4. The pitfall closes and now there is just three of us up top. Well everyone survived thanks to the druid's spell softening the ground and my summoned badgers digging a hole. And like 75% of adventures, fire was involved. We find the living quarters of the goblins. The fighter, ignites the room. So now we get smoked out the cave. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm playing a wizard and am partnered with a Bard. We are recovering at the inn, when my room seems to have been broken into. However, nothing was stolen and a ring was found. Someone broke in and left a ring. Do you put it on? Bard: "Oh, pretty!". The bard immediately grabs it and puts it on. Seems so, and now the female bard is a male bard, that also is seeing dragons and orcs attacking him. Later on, we end up captured by the Boromar clan. To live we have to fight a pet zombie. The bard has been using her sword the entire time during the adventure, and I OOCly remain the player that bards have spells, too. She suddenly remembers that quality of her class and.... Bard: "I use Fascinate!" Me OOC: "Damnit." |
| Tanvalis02-22-07, 07:39 PM | I have a few minor stories. Archer: "I roll a 20!" Me: "Confirm threat." Archer: "I roll another 20." Me: "Damn, roll insta-kill." Archer: "19." Me: "At least you didn't insta-kill. Roll damage." Was that his roll or the total of his roll... you do know that the insta-kill rule is Two natural 20's and a confirm... all the last roll has to do is hit for it to confirm an intant kill... I know this because my 14th level Shadowcaster/Wizard/Noctumancer instant killed an Elderich Giant in single combat with a mere Orb of Force. It was a good day... |
| jonci02-23-07, 04:07 AM | Was that his roll or the total of his roll... you do know that the insta-kill rule is Two natural 20's and a confirm... all the last roll has to do is hit for it to confirm an intant kill... I know this because my 14th level Shadowcaster/Wizard/Noctumancer instant killed an Elderich Giant in single combat with a mere Orb of Force. It was a good day... Eek! Rule lawyer! ;) Actually I just re-read the log for that battle. That didn't even happen for that battle. It must have been something else. Still, I was annoyed that they breezed through that battle so easily. If I ever run it again, I'm throwing out the second shifter running away. |
| Epicweaver02-26-07, 10:24 AM | Doesn't work that way, as you can only ready one action. Making an attack and making a 5' step are two seperate actions, meaning you could either attack, OR step away. You can't do both.I disagree... "You can take a 5-foot step as part of your readied action, but only if you don’t otherwise move any distance during the round.", so you could technically ready a standard action and a 5-foot step to move backwards. However, this still doesn't protect you from your opponent closing the additional 5ft (which he can technically do after the scythe wielder takes his step back, assuming he hasn't gone his full move distance) and attacking you... But it is an effective method for preventing full attacks against you (well from non-reaching monsters). |

I swear I can only recall 2 or 3 [encounters] in which my players didn't burn down something or set the bad guy on fire. Reminds me of an adventure that I was making up as we went: The PCs had headed into the forest, and came upon two houses in a creepy clearing. The houses were dark. They looked through the windows (curiosity is a DM's best friend) and saw several apparently-dead humanoids on the floor. One of them went around the house (it might have been an inn) and found the back door unlocked, so he went in. Finding "two small marks" on the necks of each body, he ran towards the front door. (The rest of the party didn't know he was inside, so when the door opened their characters freaked out.) They had torches out, so they decided to torch the place. As they toss a torch in, one of the apparently-dead humanoids gets up and attacks, followed by the others. Of course, instead of staying outside and attacking them as they come out, they rush into the burning building to fight. :) It was a great fight -- vampires and vampire spawn were new to this group and D&D -- which ended up with them downstairs in the burning building. The fight ends with the semi-collapse of the building, injuring a couple of them, but they all survived enough to run upstairs and jump out the window. Ah, good times. I don't understand my PCs sometimes, but they play a great game. |

He also wanted us to be super powerful (he rolled up super powerful baddies as well) so we rolled a d 2 0 for stats. Yeeeeeahh, just dont say anything about that there. Well in our first area we find ourselves in some sort of cavern and end up in a dungeon of some governor/mayor of the capital city. Turns out there is a little girl down there about to be killed. She is also scared out of her freaking mind. Everyone tries to calm her down, even one who is of the race that killed her family (race was basically born evil). She is scared out of her mind even more so. Welll I as the silver tongued and high charisma rogue decide to cheer her up. I say to her that I will protect her and that nothing will come to harm her and that I will always be there for her. I rolled a friggin 20 on my charisma check. So I now have a 12 year old little girl tailing me and now acts as my conscience. Ok here is where it gets interesting. A few days later the group is still ragging on me about this (I cant steal because of this little bugger). We decide to get her some toys and clothes. Little did I know that the monk decided to have a doll custom made to look like my guy. Long story short, I am now the Ken doll in this campaign. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- In my current campaign I have a Changeling rogue who decided to get the attention of a guard so the group could pass. Yeah, he was about this close l---l from getting knocked out and ahem taken advantage of by the guard. it just caught me off guard when the guy said what he was doing. I mean he was going along with leading the guard away then he said he was going to take him to a resaurant. yeah.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- In my old group my cousin was told that he had to roll up like 5 characters at a time because of him doing stupid stuff. This one time we entered a giant cavern area and there was a hybrid mix of really large dragons and t-rex's. My cousin wanted to wake them up........ |
