Vos 06-26-04, 01:06 AM	The original Record of Lodoss War. Warring kingdoms, moral ambiguity, and a mixed group of adventurers that have no idea about the Powers moving behind the scenes. At least until they're knee deep in the mess. Villains you can root for too. Maybe Slayers!, but thats a little too over the top and comedic.
Gilgiga of the Hunt 06-26-04, 02:15 AM	Oddly Cowboy Beebop, the ones where they are more Mars bound then the spacy ones. I guess that would make Ed a half-elf (so she could fly the airship named Beebop). Lotus War and Princess Mononke are both (very) good, but seem more geared twards a regular D&D setting (wasn't Lotus War acctulay D&D baised?). Eberon seems more geared twards a more modern storyline, at least twards me, the Fantisy elements add to a unique flavor. Not saying that tradtional stories can't be done here, it's all possible, and the beauty of Eberon, you can get away with perty much anything. The fact that the higest level NPC in the book is a tree is very poetic in a way simmilar to Mononke. I can't wait to start DMing this world!

The main character is able to create and repair objects through a special type of magic they call alchemy, travels with a walking suit of armor, has mechanical replacement for his arm and leg, travels by train and works for the military. A major war that basically destroyed an entire country ended not that long ago, and there are special camps where the displaced individuals are supposed to live. Add in an evil cabal of "people" named after the seven deadly sins who are trying to restart the war (among other things), and you've got more than enought Eberron material.
Sabis 06-26-04, 11:20 AM	Ironically, the anime "Noir" It's got everything for ebberon: Lots of exposition, constant mistery that the main charcters just get hints at, serching all over for clues and finding some, but never enough. Fast, high intensity action seens that are jam packed w/ cool stuff, a secret orginization pulling all the strings, and a final showdown.
deganawida 06-26-04, 12:24 PM	Wicked City (at least, that's the name that I know it by). Deals with a cop from the normal world, and a cop from the monster world, who must work together to stop an evil monster plot. Very noir, very good.
Harmony's Sorrow 06-26-04, 01:18 PM	I've already done this once on a different thread, but I agree with Akira, Wicked City, Twilight Of The Dark Master, X (Sometimes referred to as the title 1999)... I would add those to the Wicked City. Also the newer anime Metropolis... That looked to me like it could be a form of the end of Cyre. Loved it.

Razorcake 06-26-04, 08:22 PM	Nausicaa of the valley of wind, the manga, why? Because its storytelling at its best level. The anime is pretty fun too, but the manga is better. And maybe somewhere: -Battle Angel Alita. -Future Boy Conan. -Metropolis. I would also suggest Laputa castle in the sky. Cowboy Bebop has been mentioned before and is the best one to pick regarding this thread. Wicked City? Thats one of those 1000 anime's with a well developed excuse for tentacle se.x-0rz. FULL METAL ALCHEMIST, yeah obviously! For the rest, will this thread lead to other people watchign some of the anime or reading some of the manga? Who knows? ... OR..... WHEN WILL THE EBERRON:THE ANIMATED SERIES. COME OUT?!?!?!?!!?!

law 06-27-04, 02:30 AM	This looks like a good setting to play a Yu Yu Hakishow (sorry spelling) type game. I can even get a few ideas off Dragon Ball and its kin. I think this is the one setting you can find something that fits from most any anime (even a few cartoons).
minmaxticus 06-27-04, 03:56 AM	I think Final Fantasy 6 is a definite source of inspiration and parts of 7 as well. As far as the War-Forged go.... Battle Chasers, anyone? I wanted a Battle Chasers flavoured world for *so* long in D&D and although I haven't finished the book, I think Eberron is going to be a staple of my gaming diet for a loooong time to come! :D

Aris Stormdragon 06-27-04, 05:19 AM	I would like to mention Robotech - both the TV series (of which I've seen little, unfortunately) and the movie Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. I have read the novels, however, and I think that the Invid Invasion in particular fits nicely. Akira also, for the city setting, and the dark undertones running through the film. Ghost in the Shell is possible, where a party of adventurers could replace the cyborg police officers (or whatever. It's been a long time since I've seen it). The Venus Wars, for it's war-torn Venus setting, with a young unibike racer becoming a member of the resistance. M.D. Geist. If I remember correctly (another one I've not seen in awhile), the main character was a sort of military bioengineered soldier, who had to be found and re-activated in order to face the threat (which I can't remember; I need to either rent these movies again or find a place to buy them. Any suggestions?). And one more that I thought of - Fist of the North Star. More post-apocalyptic, but still a post-war setting.

I've considered running some type of anime inspired science fantasy game for years. The more I read my Eberron book the more I realize I can use many of my ideas here. The Warforge fills the robot/cyborg part and Shifters covers the humanoid anmal roles. Part of my inspirations was the Phatasy Star games. But as far as Anime goes here are some of my favorites. Genesis Survivor Gaiarth - rather easy play and play with Eberron. The war was over a bit longer in this one but still many similar elements are in this. Unfortunately I haven't found this one released on DVD so it might be harder to find right now. Iria, Zeiram the Animation - another great source of inspiration. Silent Mobius - The inspiration isn't as direct as the other two but mnay great elements.
FenrysStar 06-28-04, 09:21 PM	You know, I love all the series mentioned with some of their adventures in outer space. Despite the fact there is no outer space to Eberron. Altough if you added the space element you'd be merging Eberron with SpellJammer which is not necessarily a bad thing

I really want to have Vincent and Jules from Pulp Fiction as competitor adventurers/ mercenaries... how cool would that be?! They wouldn't neccessarily be bad guys, just the PCs unpredictable competition for some major jobs. Anyone seen the new-ish movie City of God? Excellent movie set in a gang controlled slum city outside Rio de Janeiro. I was thinking of having the PCs come across a small town dominated by a group of vicious juvenile gangsters called the Runts, who are actually just being mislead by some other force. How about Hero, the new Jet Li movie? The setting is traditional Feudal Asia, but the moral ambiguity is on point, and its a killer freakin' movie to boot. Also on the topic of Princess Mononoke (I don't usually get down with anime... not really my thing...but this is one of my favorite movies EVER), I was thinking of actually dropping Iron Town into the Eldeen Reaches. It would be set up that Ashitaka (Warden of the Wood) and Lady Eboshi rebuilt Iron Town with more respect towards the wildlife around it, but the Ashbound still hold a grudge against it and are slowly and quietly amassing a mercenary force to lay seige to it, by promising to liquidate whatever weapons and raw minerals are seized.

Ezekiel 06-29-04, 05:39 AM	Ch@pel: In the thread about "no guns in Eberron", we discussed using elements from Mononoke in Eberron, and I actually suggested pretty much the same thing. Putting Iron Town in the Eldeen Reeches. Though my idea was to make it a Brelish outpost, what with the industry and all, and make the forest angry with them for despoiling nature. The constext was to find a place for guns in Eberron, btw, and I thought it would be a great idea to add guns that use Khyber shards or tainted iron or the like, that poison nature and make horrible demons out of powerful animals they hit, like Dire Boars :)

Atlantis is a good suggestion actually, I initially thought only of Japanese Animation but animated projects from this side of the Pacific is also warrented suggestion wise.
Ch@pel 06-29-04, 07:51 PM	I wasn't trying to steal Anime's collective thunder, I just wanted to toss in some mentions of other live action movies. Ezekiel: I LIKE that idea about adding guns into Ebberon. What would you use for stats? I wouldn't want to make the guns over powered and I wouldn't want to make crossbows and bows obsolete. If I were to add them, I would make them almost exactly the way they appear in Princess, with the long hilt and the flint/wick for firing. They wouldn't have a very long range increment, maybe 60 ft., the guns are fairly low-tech and after 60 ft. they would be pretty inaccurate. Damage would have to be comparable to a heavy crossbow, maybe a d12 instead of d10, but longer reload time? (And of course, exotic wep. prof.) I'd also make it so that Iron Town is the only place that makes them, and they are very rare everywhere else in the world. Maybe the druids in the surrounding area do a good job of keeping shipments of guns from getting anywhere else, so if you want one, you gotta fight through the druids, into the town, then finagle one from someone in there. Also, they probably are expensive to make, because of the restrictive nature of mining around the town. Whatchathink?

And though the TV series isn't all that great, it could provide some very good inspiration considering the addition of magitech to the Ninja Scroll world. Also, the world of Naruto is built on the premise of a modern world where gunpowder doesn't exist and ninja powers are real. The conflicts between the various nations also makes for good inspiration.

hiryuu 07-11-04, 05:26 PM	I just had another one- Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. It's chock full of pulp goodness. Let's say.... we have an artificer and a rogue or bard of uncertain heritage. Together they're on the run from a troop of other artificiers out to get the rogue's heirloom necklace. The whole thing ties into the heirs of the technology of the giants themselves, and a flyng fortress that has an eldritch machine that can rain fire from the heavens.
