Note that when the Giants of Xen'drik sought to use dragon magic for a more "minor" purpose than saving the world, the dragons struck back at them. Perhaps someone in Cyre discovered the secrets of the dragon magic as well, and was about to use it in some way, but was discovered by a Chamber agent.

Now consider that this Chamber agent wouldn't have had the best of connections throughout Cyre, so he'd need some help. Perhaps purchasing information from, and working closely with House Phiarlan. In return for all their help, he tells them "you may want to leave now..."....

then BLAM! DRAGONS!

It adds a whole new possible reason for what happened to Cyre, one that I suspect most players wouldn't come up with themselves. There are far more ancient and powerful forces in the world than mere humans.

Great idea! Here's another possibility: perhaps House Phiarlan "acquired" the secrets for Cyre, and when Cyre tried to use the dragon magic, something went wrong.

This is what makes the creation of the Mournland (and many other elements of Eberron) such good additions to the setting. It's there, it's explicitly stated, but the why's and how's are not. We, as DM's and players, are free to theorize to our heart's content, because there's nothing in the book to say "this is what made the Mournland, period". Mystery makes for really good gaming sessions, in my experience.

Hey, I'm really liking this idea. I'm going to use it for the explanation in my game. Neat, thanks.

what kind of spell would it be ( besides draconic)? I was thinking some sort of "animate spell" spell. That would explain the feild of ruins and the glowing chasm and the glass plateau. The animated spells would congregate near the glass plateau because thats where they are created, and the animals go to glowing chasm ( a huge animated augment monster spell living in the rock) because thats where they can become more likely to survive. the field of ruins is an animated gentle repose.

Well I hadn't thought out completely how the dragons did it (they are dragons after all. Uncomprehensible!) but I was going to give some clues, hidden away in Xen'drik for higher level adventuring.

Deep in the jungles of Xen'drik, there is a land where even the drow refuse to travel, a stretch of jungle surrounded by dead gray mists... and in the center lays an ancient city, its name forgotten to the eons, which was once the capital of the great empire of the giants...

Eventually the players might (or might not) discover that the same thing which hastened the fall of the giants was the same force let loose on Cyre.

I belive it is in the book that the giants fell when they used magic to repell the plane of Madness Xoriat. and the elves took the oportunity to free themselves finnishing them off.
