Any Non-Epic Adventures (as in Epic == Save-the-World)??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey all, hope things are well with everyone!

I was wondering if anyone was thinking of running or is currently running a non-epic Eberron campaign. I use the phrase 'non-epic' in the sense of not having your PCs save the world from the clutches of the Blood of Vol, or Dragons, or the Inspired or whatever other group one thinks is nasty enough to do something catastrophic.

The reason why I'm making this thread is because it seems that most campaigns that people talk to me about (or that I read upon this forum) seem to involve something with either Vol bringing back her bloodline to life, or the Inspired taking over something, or the Lords of Dust releasing a Rakshasha Lord and all Shavarrath breaking loose (or some plot to that effect). While plot lines like this are fairly awesome (especially when done by a great DM), I feel that it makes Eberron seem a little, eh, Forgotten Realmish (ducks).

Perhaps Forgotten Realmish isn't the phrase I should have used... maybe one of you can help me out here...

Again, I have nothing against this type of campaign, but I wanna know if anyone has a fairly simple campaign of sorts (i.e., guard an important House member, spy on the other nations, find some treasure, loot the Brelish coast, etc.).

I am planning to run a campaign that will involve the PCs going on a combined treasure hunt/mystery. If the PCs are successful, they become rich and possibly get recommended to join a spy organization; if they fail, the worst that happens is that the mastermind BBEG becomes filthy rich and becomes one of the new members of the Sharn Sixty and bribes more of the Sharn Watch. Yup, that's it. No end-of-the-world-destruction, no Rakshasha release armaggedon, no Turning of the Age. Just a simple act of corruption and greed, or the PCs stopping it.

So... anyone else have any campaign ideas similar to what I posted or are playing anything like that right now?

I ran a campaign which started with the PCs being sentenced for arson because they were involved in a brawl which knocked over a few lamps. They weren't able to pay the fine, so they were about to be sent to prison when a dwarven 'bail bondsman' offered to pay their fine if they signed a contract to work of their debts to him. Most of the jobs were not epic as such, retrieving stolen property, bounty hunting, investigating a house Vadalis facility that lost contact (they were breeding giant ants to do construction work and a child of winter turned the ants against them), clearing a section of the Sharn sewers so an underworld figure could launch a surprise attack on a rival. When 'epic' things happened, they were usually involved by accident (they were bodyguarding someone on the lightning rail to Fairhaven when Emerald Claw Terrorists staged a 'train robbery' where they planned to set the train to accellerate until it smashed into the terminal (after having escaped with the loot), they were at the zoo when Ashbound tried to let the animals and monsters out, that sort of thing).

Let's see....

1) I ran a game where the PCs were just stereotypical treasurehunters. Which is not quite as lucritive in my Eberron as perhaps in previous campaigns. I regularly tried to pull them into this intrigue or that, but they ran screaming from them at every opportunity.

2) Ran a solo campaign where the PC had a personal vendetta against the Boromar clan. He wiped out about 12 members of the actual family before they found him and wound his intestines around one of Sharn's towers.

3) Currently playing in a campaign where we're all just trying to avoid being squashed by all the power organizations around us. We're probably an equivilent 14-16th level party, but the DM is playing all these organizations as much more powerful then perhaps the ECS presents them. Or maybe he's just putting up a good front? Hmmmmmmm......

I'm probably the wrong person to post here, since I tend to run crazy-long campaigns where though the individual plot arcs are rarely epic, they all mesh together somehow in the end for one last huge blowout.

However, I did run an adventure based on From Hell (thanks to whoever posted the idea here a year or so ago). While the stakes and the outcome (at least to the player characters) were hardly earth-shattering, the fact that they managed to save the life of a Cyran prostitute who was supposed to be ritually murdered on 20 Olarune, 894, may have had some consequences much further down the line.

Just as soon as we're done saving Breland from a insane, power mad, pre-Vol blood cleric mummy bent on saving the world by turning everyone in into undead I have this idea for a Sharn game set around saving their neighborhood from a gang war between halflings and ogres.

I see it starting off as the Brunner (sp?) Clan threatning to turn the local church into a brothal. And moving on from there with such adventures as exposing local police corruption, saving an orphanage from a mindflayer Kyber cult, and breaking a protection money racket.

Nicely done everyone! I'm trying to get people for mine; hopefully when the campaign finishes I will try to make it into a more traditional 'save-the-world' campaign, but for now, I figure that low-level Eberron PC groups need something a little more, well, 'manageable' so they can prove themselves. Well, it's not really necessary, but I like a break from saving the world every now and then.

@yossarius, that solo campaign sounds like it was awesome; did the PC take levels in the Vigilante class? Can you tell me more about him/her?

@evilmonster, where will the game be taking place in Sharn? The gang war scenario seems awesome for some parts of Middle and Lower Dura (and probably some ties to the Cogs below).

Also, it's the Boromar Clan, but it's close enough ;P

I'm running a Sharn campaighn at the moment, the PC's are private investigators. At the moment they're investigating a string of random thefts that plauging some of the lower wards. Before that they were doing a rescue mission in Xendrik. Next up is an affair between two members of two different house's, not sure what they'll do, probably bribery/blackmail.

Hmm... I'm sure there's a good way to connect these in some non-crazy sounding way for a small to normal sized PC group (about 3-4 people).

Should we think up of a way how??
