The party in Eberron game is nearing a section of the campaign where they will play a Live action game of Conqueror. I see the game like chess, but with seven pieces and 49x49 space board. The actual rules for the "board" game I made up basically involve a King who can move like the queen in chess and has 5 combat dice, a Knight, who moves like the knight in chess and has 4 combat dice, 2 warriors who can move 2 spaces in any direction and have 2 combat dice, but once per game can re-roll on of their combat dice, a Wizard who moves like the Rook in Chess and 2 combat dice, but once per game can double their roll, a Bishop who moves like the Bishop in chess and has 2 combat dice, but once per game can heal anyone piece except the King, (bring the piece back onto the board), and a Rogue, who can move and 3 spaces in a line, straight, diagnol, or backword, and who once per game can match an opposing pieces combat dice, while the rogue normally has 2 combat dice. Combat occurs anytime a piece is within space to space of an opponent. Dice are rolled and totalled, the highest total being the winner. The object is to eliminate the opposition's king or the all the king's men.

The live action version would allow the players to assume each of the roles and move accordingly. Combat here however is face to face to either the death or one side asks for quarter. The kings of the various sides move the pieces, just like in a real live chess game. The board is cleared and combat ensues.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Do I have a good idea here, or do you guys have tweaks for me?

Thanks in advance

I worked out a few rules for my version of Conqueror, but it's still getting worked out, so this isn't complete at all.

The board itself has the chess/checker-board pattern. There are six kinds of pieces (and how many): Monarch (1), Cleric (1), Wizard (1), Rogues (2), Fighters (3), and warriors (8).

Board Set-Up:

F R Z F M C R F
w w w w w w w w

w w w w w w w w
F R C M F Z R F

*w = warrior; Z = Wizard

Ways to win:

Victory By Land: Bring two of your warriors and two Strategic Pieces (cleric, wizard, rogue or fighter) to the far side of the board, and keep them there for two consecutive turns.

Victory By Heart: Kill the opposing Monarch with your Monarch.

Victory By Attrition: Kill the opposing Monarch with a piece other than your Monarch, and prevent the other side from attaining a Victory By Land.

The Pieces:

The Warriors can move one space per turn, going foreward only, or diagonally to kill.

The Cleric can move any number of spaces per turn, in a straight line, in diagonal directions. If the Cleric is already next to a space where an allied piece was killed the previous turn, the Cleric can bring that piece back to life.

The Wizard can move one space per turn, or can teleport to an unoccupied corner space. Once per game, the Wizard may cast fireball, killing all pieces within one square of it, enemies and allies included.

The Rogue can move four spaces per turn, but does not have to travel in a straight line. This means the Rogue can change direction mid-turn, so as to go around other pieces. The Rogue needs an allied piece on the other side of an enemy piece to kill the enemy piece.

The Fighter can move any number of spaces per turn, in a straight line, in non-diagonal directions.

The Monarch can move one space per turn in any direction, and, declared at the begining of the game, may have one special ability from a Strategic Piece. For example, the Monarch could choose the Wizard's teleportation, but could not also have the "fireball" move. The Monarch may instead choose to use the movement rules of a Strategic Piece.

Edit: Oh, I thought this was a "bring your ideas for Conqueror" thread, rather than "Help me with my Conqueror." Woops! Should've read it before posting... Oh, well. I'll try to be constructive, so my post isn't a total loss to you.

I definately think you have a good idea. Putting characters on game boards is classic in Fantasy, and it's great fun, too. Using dice in Conqueror is an interesting idea; I hadn't thought of that. It works well to reflect the randomness of a battlefield, brings in "luck" as an element of gameplay, and the players get to have fun rolling dice around :) I think you've got a good thing going, but you may want to try playing it yourself to find the kinks or game-slowing parts, if there are any.
