Yes. The ship date is: Q3 2005. That means, at least a year. :D

Oh, and here's why they chose Eberron...

Excerpt from Warcry.Com Chat with Cardell Kerr, Sr Game System Designer for Dungeons and Dragons Online

The Dungeons and Dragons Online story, as told by Turbine, is set in the world of Eberron, one of the more recent campaign worlds published by Wizards of the Coast. I had to wonder what elements of style that Turbine was bringing to a world so detailed and deep.

“Eberron is a wonderful campaign setting,” he said, obviously liking this subject. “It provided us with an amazing amount of plot elements on which we could build. It’s a very mature setting.”

“In many ways, it’s actually a kind of relief to work with [the setting]. The basis is so widespread, and you can do so much with it. Just the ability to customize this campaign, to put new things in this world – we’re very satisfied with it.”

“That’s one of the good things about our relationship with WotC: The world is evolving to meet our needs, just as we are evolving to meet theirs.”

Why work with Eberron and not Greyhawk, or Dark Sun, or one of the other, older campaign settings?

“A lot of it has to do with our ship date,” piped up Jason Wonacott, Director of Corporate Communications, and watch-dog for this conversation. “Atari is our publisher, and they are the exclusive publisher of all things video game related to D&D. Yea, we could have done a Greyhawk, we could have done another campaign setting. Eberron is new, it’s fresh, it’s sexy, and it’s the setting that DDO will be in addition to other Atari titles coming out at the same time.”

I had to imagine that the timing was good for new WotC books hitting the market, as well, as they would most likely be in the Eberron campaign setting.

“Right,” continued Jason. “When we sat down to decide in which campaign the game was going to take place, looking again at our launch date, and what we wanted to provide the community, part of it was “keeping up with the Jones’”, and the other part is just having something very fresh, and very new to work with.”

I hate MMORPGS. Nothing infuriates me more than paying $50 for a game I have to pay $10+/month to actually play.

Seems like you should be able to have one character without the extra charges, than add a service charge of a few bucks a month for additional characters.

It's not that bad really. I used to buy a new computer game every 1-2 months. Now, since I started playing a MMORPG I don't have any time left to play other games, so I am actually saving money compared to before! :-)
However, I wouldn't recommend anyone to start playing a MMORPG unless you are able and willing to invest a lot of time into it.

Hmm, I guess things have changed, the last I heard the reason Eberron was created was becuase Hasbro sold the gaming rights to FR and the other old DnD worlds to Infrogames.

If WotC wanted to see more than just a few residuals off a DnD licence, it had to make one from scratch.

Don't get me wrong, I love Eberron and game companies employees have to eat too.
