| JiCi01-18-07, 07:43 PM | Sharn: the City of Towers came with a CD filled with 45 minutes of music, which you can get a sample here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/news/20040912news). Do you use that soundtrack to spice up your game ? If so, is it worth it ? |
| Alex_01-18-07, 08:04 PM | City of Towers came with a CD? That's news to me, as I've never seen one in a book in a store. Is it only if you order it online or something? Sounds okay from the samples your provided. Of all of them, I think Exploring Xendrik does the best job of conjuring up those feelings of pulp adventure comics Eberron draws inspiration from. I can easily imagine this playing as the party is bound and carried off by a tribe of Drow to be prepared for dinner. :D |
| TacoClone01-18-07, 08:13 PM | Hm, I used it in my last game session. Unfortunately, my PCs seem to be too ADD and couldn't stand it playing the same track over and over and we ended up just playing the whole CD. So, I think it just depends on if your players would like that sort of thing or not. |

It did I don't know if they still do. But yeah. Note we're talking about the Sharn: City of Towers sourcebook and not the City of Towers novel. |

So, I think it just depends on if your players would like that sort of thing or not. Happened to me too. I've always thought of doing it again at a lower volume so it still adds to the ambiance but doesn't take attention away from the game. It doesn't really add to the books value to me personally. Its just a neat freebie. The first books in the Eberron line seem to be built with Emergency Franchise Crash control. Not just a free cd gimick but also the whole drive not to depend on Races of Eberron for being used in Eberron. Go figure. |
| Cloud Divider01-20-07, 10:26 AM | I haven't ever really used it during the session - not all of the tracks are good for every situation, and it'd be logistically difficult to 'cue' tracks when I wanted them... I think I also had some background music playing during chargen, but that was about it. However, I often used the soundtrack while I was planning, as a means of getting my brain into the right imaginary space. And for that purpose, it was absolutely invaluable. |
| SiouLubb01-22-07, 12:53 PM | Yup, my group uses it along with our usual stable of fantasy music. Goes quite well with the setting and the game. Highly recommended. |
| SSj3goblin01-22-07, 01:11 PM | I listened to the Xen'drik track and It's not bad at all. However, my favorite music to play along an Eberron game is: Sunn O))) (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=69636202)(Especially the collaboration album with Boris) And Mind flayer (http://www.corleonerecords.com/mp3s/mindFlayer_moldDie.mp3)(for intense combat scenes) |
| Edymnion01-22-07, 03:19 PM | Only the first printing of CoT had the CD in it, actually. And no, I don't use it, the tracks are too short. But then again, I'd want the tracks to be at *LEAST* 20 minutes long before I found them really suitable. |
| mhacdebhandia01-22-07, 03:50 PM | I'm planning to take the CD to the character creation session for my Eberron Savage Tide game tonight. :) |
| Sereno01-23-07, 09:31 AM | Yes, I use the tracks from the CD in my game ... along with lots of other "gaming" music; Midnight Syndicate, Matti Palaanen, Paul Houseman, and soundtracks like Gladiator, LoTR and Conan. Like Edy says, they're too short to be the ONLY music in the game; but many times, they do have the "right" sound for crucial encounters. |
| Edymnion01-23-07, 07:20 PM | I actually like to keep some long playing sound effects CDs on hand for when they are required. Somewhere I've got an mp3 (that I burned to cda) of rain. Just an hour's worth of nothing but the sound of rain. Or one of just dripping water in a big echoing place. Or howling wind. Just simple nature sounds that I can just put on in the background and not need to worry about them again for the rest of the night. |
| gleicher2701-23-07, 07:39 PM | Yep. And we like it too...but I also have a list of soundtracks that I have. |

Where did you find it? |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph01-24-07, 07:41 PM | Use it? No. Enjoy listening to it? Yeah! Which... is weird being as that I am a die-hard metal head...:thinks: |
| Ramses III01-25-07, 05:29 PM | I always use music in my games; I find it really contributes to a cinematic atmosphere and often helps the players get more involved. I used the Eberron soundtrack in the most recent game session I ran, the first session in a new campaign. I found the first track well-suited to my opening narrative (and one of my players who's pretty new to roleplaying said it was "awesome"); I used another track, Dreams of the Quori or whatever it's called, to set up a spooky atmosphere when the PCs entered a largely abandoned town that had been taken over by Dragon Below cultists. I like instrumental soundtrack music for gaming, but I don't limit my music use to movie scores and the like. I like to throw in some industrial or metal during big fight scenes, and use other music where appropriate. I avoid using rock-and-roll, rap, country or pop though... it just doesn't feel very "fantasy" when you're playing Billboard Top 40 stuff. |

| Esgay01-27-07, 03:25 PM | Personally I reccomend trying to get a hold of the soundtrack for the game Shadow of the Collosus, the score for that ranges from being subtle and gentle to epic sweeping scores. The only problem is that nearly everyone in my group has played the game so a change in track would invariably lead to a debate on which area the music was from :P |
| Edymnion01-27-07, 05:27 PM | :confused:Who knows, but given that its nothing but a bunch of stupid ytmnd stuff, I doubt its important. |
