| Uratoh01-15-06, 08:37 AM | Fairly simple, came up with it when I was statting a WF Juggernaut. Armblade of Ogre Power This Armblade functions in all respects as a normal +1 armblade, save the fact that it also integrates the magic of a single gauntlet of Ogre Power. While useless on its own, if the wearer of this attached component wears a Gauntlet of Ogre Power on his other hand, he gains the benefits of a pair. 4300 G Price is standard armblade, plus half the cost of a pair of Gauntlets. Came up with the idea when I realized an attached armblade uses up the 'gauntlety' slot. |
| talion0901-15-06, 01:27 PM | I can't think of anything broken about this idea, but wouldn't this lead to a bunch of leftover gauntlets of ogre power? Ie, if most warforged used thier armblades on their right hands(probable, since their is no reason to believe Cannith would of made them all left handed instead of the status quo), then we'd have a surplus of extra right handed gauntlets of ogre power. Or you could just make a new magic item for WF that boosts strength instead of the standard gauntlets. Make it the same cost, but add in the limitation that it is a warforged component and have it take up the amulet slot like the essence of the scout in the ECS. |
| MarkB01-15-06, 01:39 PM | Rather than creating a new item, I'd simply rule that armblades are capable of adjusting themselves to fit over any normal-shaped gauntlet, though not a spiked gauntlet or battlefist. |
| Edymnion01-15-06, 02:03 PM | Balance it out a bit more, IMO. Its a +1 armblade, combined with the guantlets of ogre might, but you have to wear both parts for any of it to work. As in, if you wear just the armblade, it is just a masterwork weapon that can't be disarmed. You don't get the bonus unless you're also wearing the other guantlet. That, or just remap the guantlets to bracers, then you don't have to worry about it in the first place. |
| Deadguy01-16-06, 03:09 AM | Also consider what you've said: that the bonus from the Armblade adds to the bonus from the Gauntlet(s) of Ogre Power. Since both presumably give a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength, they wouldn't add. You could phrase it that the Armblade gives a +2 enhancement bonus to Strength, and also increases the bonus of a pair of Gauntlets of Ogre Power to +4 enhancement bonus when worn. But you'd need to cost it pretty much as a +4 enhancement bonus to Strength (actually cost it as the cost pf +4 bonus minus the cost of the +2 bonus). I think I can see what you are trying to get at, but I agree with MarkB it might be easier just to rule that Armblades fit over Gauntlets. |
| Just another user01-16-06, 03:17 AM | I think it should cost a bit more because it leaves you a slot for one of the gloves that don't come in pairs (like a glove of storing, for example) |
| Deadguy01-16-06, 03:33 AM | Perhaps, but I think that bonus is fairly small. And of course I only discussed a part of the cost of the Armblade, viz teh Strength enhancment. it still needs to be additionally costed for the +1 bonus Armblade itself. By my reckoning it ought to be something like: Strength enchancement price = 16,000 (cost of +4) minus 4000 (cost of +2) = 12,000 +1 Armblade = 2,330 x 2 (additional ability) = 4,660 Total market price = 16,660 (perhaps round that up to 17,000 to meet Just Another User's point) Not a cheap item by any means. |
| Uratoh01-16-06, 03:40 AM | it doesnt give you a slot for another gauntlet/etc item. it functions as one half of a pair of gauntlets of ogre power. |
| Armorlord01-19-06, 01:23 AM | If you want it to be used as a pair, go ahead and price/sell it as a pair, One gauntlet and one gauntlet/armblade. Maybe as a variation have gauntlet/battlefist and a gauntlet/armblade, or a pair of gauntlet/battlefists. If you want it to be used by itself, could go with the same stats but say that you gain the same bonuses, but only on attacks with that armblade. |
| Uratoh01-19-06, 01:48 AM | ya, the idea was this warforged wizard made the Armblade and the single gauntlet together...was I not clear enough on that? Might not be a bad idea to make other 'variants' too. My main ponderment was, 'is adding half the price of a pair of gauntlets to the armblade' the appropriate pricing scheme? |

Made as a set that produces the effects of both the price would be the cost of the armblade and a pair of gauntlets added together, at least. And I would agree with Edymnion that the weapon enchancements only work when both are worn. If it was just an armblade that could double as an individual gauntlet I'd say your price could work, but I'd say that at least a ritual or an enchantment (such as Master's Touch) be needed to link a preexisting gauntlet to the armblade/gauntlet, and then you have a third unlinked gauntlet laying around. Better to just have the essence culled from an old pair and construct a set as a pair. |
| Euangelion01-19-06, 09:52 AM | Don't forget that adding another effect to an item costs x1.5 as much as creating a individual item of that kind. In other words, making two gloves of storing (10,00 gp each) that are also gloves of dexterity +2 (usually 4000 gp) would cost 26,000 gp total. 10,000+10,000+(4000*1.5)=26,000 gp. A set of gloves of dexterity +2 that inlcudes one glove of storing would cost 16,000 gp, if created from scratch. Making one glove a glove of storing in a pair of already existing gloves of dexterity +2 would cost 15,000 gp. One way to look at it would be to start with gauntlets of ogre power (4000 gp) and add the +1 armblade component (2330 gp) to it. 4000+(2330*1.5)=7495 gp. Or to start with the +1 armblade (2330 gp) and add gauntlets of ogre power (4000 gp). 2330+(4000*1.5)=8330 gp However, there's no rule that states that you have to go with the more expensive price when starting from scratch, but if you already have the armblade, then you go with the 8330 gp. As a houserule, I could see if a player had both components already, that for 2000 gp he/she could combine them. While adding such abilities to weapons is unusual, and there is a steep price for making an unslotted perpetual magic item (in other words, you can make a +1 longsword that also increases strength by 2, it'll just cost a lot), in this case it's easier since the armblade is described as taking up the gauntlet slot. Making more powerful versions just means changing the base price of the item, but generally it makes sense to go with the belt slot for strength items, since the gauntlet slot is more flexible (since it includes dexterity as well, but belts are just belts). Edit: with wondrous items, you don't even need masterwork versions to create them, that's just weapons and armor. Thus all you need to add gauntlets of ogre power to an armblade is another gauntlet that's just lying around. Or take gauntlets of ogre power and then modify one gauntlet to include an armblade. There's no need to have an extra enchanted gauntlet lying around, since the armblade is a gauntlet. I would also suggest that you need to wear both to get the +2 strength, but the armblade works by itself. /edit However, I can sometimes get the particulars wrong, so if anyone notices an error in my calculations, please identify them for me. Thanks! |
| DwarfPcfan01-19-06, 10:04 AM | Everyone has a point. Best tip I could give Urathot is to symplify the Item. Make the proper calculations to add the price and make it simply an special arm blade that gives a +2 enhancement to strenght and then simply specify that the specifics of the enchantment allows a user to use a single gunthlet of ogre power and receive additional bonuses ( netting a +4 to strenght leading to a +2 to damage and other bonuses). In regards to the discarded gunthlet well story wise, maybe you simply could say that the object was thrown out of circulation because it was ineficient. nothing stops people from making them but house Cannith does not see it as marketable option. Simple, you get your proper effects, alows a tiny role playing. Nice... coodos on the item too, it's giving me some ideas on how to reward a certain warforged artificer/fighter in the game I'm Dming...
