11-23-04, 12:17 PM How much info do we actually have on Arcanix so far? Just the writeup in the ECS? What I know about it leads me to believe it's almost-but-not-quite Hogwartsish, which I think would be a really fun niche to be filled within Eberron. It certainly seems like the sort of civilized setting where a long term wizard school would actually exist. Never mind entirely the threat of a particularly good student going rogue.

So what do we have? Any info on the Faculty somewhere? (A new Dragonshard in the works, perhaps? <3)

I don't see it as a Hogwarts, I think its more of a university than a secondary school. So in my Arcanix you wont find 13 year old magewrights causing mayhem in the corridors, but learned scholars pursuing their interests. Of course, some scholars may be a little more outrageous in their methods than others.

But I also see it more like a college.

One of them was an INDOOR snowball fight.

Currently the craziest hijink I've had here at college is when I moved my room mates bed down the hall, complete with mattress, frame, bedsheets, and pornomags. He had fun carrying it back to the room.

But other than that my college experience seems strangely lacking in crazy hijinks and drunken parties.

Ah well.

I see Arcanix as being more of a finishing school / college then a k-12 school. But you have to wonder... how do those not privledged with wealth and private tutors get in? Say, an oprhan from Sharn slums... how does he get into one of hte magic universities? To get a scholarship he has to demonstrate remarkable ability before hand... how does that get shown? Admitedly, I'm thinking of Morgave (Mograve? Can't remember spellling) right now, but if I recall, the entry for Arcanix said that they were looking for new students to fill out their ranks.

11-24-04, 10:28 AM I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Wynarn. They were practically emptied by the Last War, and they've sent out a nationwide call for new students, which has brought in more than a few monstrous races.

On the ground, Arcanix could have several k-12 schools were ambicious[sp] parents send their kids in hopes that hanging around a centre of magic will get them noticed, or they'll pick up something. Low level magic is taught here, nothing beyond cantrips. But every day the children have the sight of several towers floating in the air above them, the places where *real* magic is done.

Adds new meaning to the terms Upper-classman and Lower-classman.

Once a year or so, staff from the floating towers comes down and visits the schools to take students who show promise up into the clouds to learn. Moving up from the ground schools is seen as having 'made it', and the competition for the few select spots often leads to life-long grudges being formed here. Naturally, the jockying for placement and the opportunity to show off one's powers at these times are fierce, leading to many unfortunate 'pranks' that results in some students not making it to the testing.

Some great plots can be used with this dicotomy in Arcanix: students (and certain parents) sabotoging other students, staff members accepting bribes as opposed to deciding on talent, rejected students swearing revenge, the distain the upper-classmen feel for the packs of lower-classmen who will do anything for the chance at learning in the towers.

... actually, I kinda like what I just thought up of. I'm going to use this in my Arcanix. Thanks for setting up this thread!

And honsetly, if all the schools mentioned in the ECS are universities, what schools do young children go to? Just your average local school? I'd imagine, especially in Aundair, where education is highly thought of, that there would be some kind of fancy prep school and boarding schools that aritocrats and middle-class families would want their children sent to. They got to go to school somewhere before going to the university level.

But I like the idea of Arcanix being all-encompasing. Great thread idea, by the way.

General education seems to be taken care of in a somewhat unofficial manner. But magical education is something else entirely. Unless one is fortunate enough to have the money or connections to get into one of the universities, learning magic is going to be hard. A truly prodigal aspirant might find himself sponsored if discovered by a member.

Without the opportunities available to the very rich and very lucky, the typical aspirant might manage to learn a little magic. A couple of spells that might help raise him above the rest.
