| Niaslos FireCrow04-13-05, 02:26 PM | Hi, I'm thinking of making an archery tournament in which one of my PC will participate in Taer Valaestas. He's level 4 and will be in the master (lvl.4-6) category. So, I would like to quickly (the game is in one hour or so) some originals NPC Valenar Elves concepts who could be fun to fight against (the fights work that way: three effective attacks and one win but I'm not sure if there should have pause or not between each hit). Also there's the problem of to-easy-to-hit thing... With guys who have +10 ranged attacks but only 16-20 AC it will be far to easy to hit. I was thinking of concealments, cover and distance to compensate all that but if you could give me other ideas to make the thing exciting and interesting it would be nice. Other ideas of how to make the terrain and the fight more interesting would be nice. Thank you for sharing your creativity with me :) . |
| DerLykanthrop04-13-05, 02:52 PM | My ideas for this contest: 1. try mounted combat. If the archers are riding, they are on the move, which limits their number of attacks and in addition the difficulty to hit an opponent while riding is higher (see mounted combat in phb) 2.moving targets. they could try to shoot down some flying creatures, small birds or something like that. at high ranges it should be difficult enough 3.grasslands. not that pity excuse from the garden, thatīs called grass, but some really high growing grass-plants like in the african savannah or something like that. it could be an interresting and bloody variant of hide and seek.. one combatant as the hunter and the others have to hide in the wilderness. if the hunter has a day time to catch his "prey", after which the next one is declared to be the hunter... 4.Raid. the Valenar ride out in a group of 5 or 6 for a raid. One of them keeps track of the "performance" of the others and declares the winner of this contest after they return to the main camp.. could also be interesting to add a little intrigue to this challange: one of the other contestants trys to get the "jury" on his side... Well, thatīs what I could think of at the moment... Please tell me, if anything was useful as one of my players portraits an Valenar swordmaster in my campaign. :D |

| Setherial04-20-05, 02:15 AM | did I misread or do you have them shoot at eachother at a tournament ??? how awfully barbaric :) lol I'd DMed such a tournament once, there were supposed to be close to 100 poeple participaiting but we just went to the finale where the pc was left against 4 others of which one was a rich noble who won the last 4 tournaments. Anyway I would set up several trials : - shooting a bullseye (fixed target) at different ranges, it's put back about 4 times and each time every one of the archers must try to hit it with the penalty taken into account for far range archery. - as suggested above, have a mounted trial where the contesters have to shoot a target while mounted and riding full speed past the target. - the hunt, have a trial test their hunting skills. They enter the near forest with only a dagger and a long bow and no armour. They have 3 hours to track down and kill a certain animal and bring it back (a boar or something). |
| Niaslos FireCrow04-20-05, 01:46 PM | Lol I must admit it looks barbaric but when I had the idea I found it would be fun. It's quite inspired by the Dragon Ball-like tournaments so this is why they got to fight each other. The ideas posted here are very interesting but since they where posted a bit to late the only idea I used which was posted was the #2 of DerLykanthrop and tweaked some other. Here are the ideas I used: The qualification was quite simple: you had to shoot a single bird freed at 200ft. of you in the desert. You had only one arrow so be sure he took an action point not to miss it. The 4 other where: - Mounted archery contest. 3 participant. To win you have to be the first to arrive at the end and had pierced (1 inch thick wood target so you had to do more than 5 points of damage for a good hit) the ten fixed target spread around the arena. You have 20 arrows and can't do anything that might hurt horses but you can hit other participant with your arms and try to take them down of their horse (it's also to see how they're good at mounted fighting without melee weapon but caught in melee). - Dual of archer in a 50ft. high grassland and tree areas. You had a limit of movement you could make so that it was basically fight in which the two participants had cover and 20% miss chance. Each round the archers shoot one arrow. If it is a good hit (do 10% of target hit point in damage or more) you win the round. If you win three rounds you're the winner. - Deathmatch. 3 contestant are in the center of the arena surrounded by improvised wooden walls. 4 obscuring mist spells are cast ine the area and the three contestant have to take down each other within 2 minutes or this is ended and the last contestants must now fith in a reduced place where a deeper darkness spell was cast. The archers fight with 10 +1 merciful arrows. If you run out of ammunition you lose. The winner is the last one who remain in the arena conscious. - Moving target shooting. A boomerang throwers who's at 200 ft. of you shoot a boomerang in the air each round. You must hit 5 boomerang. You have 5 arrows and 5 others arrows are hidden in the area (this contest is ine desert). If you run out of arrows you're disqualified. And the finals was a dual in the center of the arena which was agremented with rocks and wooden walls for possible cover and had some minor traps placed everywhere. There was also 8 leopard-traps which if you approach 5 ft. of them sprung open to release the leopard (which was bound to a 10ft. chain). The felines were also freed after one minute of fight anyway. The finalist had 40 arrows and it was a match to death but each duelist had with him a healing potion and could take it but if he does so, he lose the final. During all the contest you had no armor (except fort those in which you were targeted in which you had a leather armor) and normal bow of your choice. You won 5 points if you win in one of the chalenge, 1 if you lose and 3 if you're the second (in the mouted archery race and the deathmatch). This was nice, I see know it was a bit violent but it was nice anyway and that's what really count huh? |
