| Aervyper Venom07-05-04, 11:07 AM | Instead of starting my senario in Shaarn where i suppose most of them probably willl. I decided on starting my campaign and running it around the Argonth fortress. Now the Argonth has about a half page of writing and a half page picture. I was just wondering what everyone else thought of this fortress. Opinion: It reminds me of an aircraft carrier (however an aircraft carrier holds 3200 people so it's a bit smaller) I'm sure it's got battle placements with a couple of trebs and or catapults. Also probably some magical storage devices to release storred up spells I'm pretty sure they would be some form of air cavelry on this ship. I guess i'd just like to know what everyone thought as to weather it's an attack platform or a mobile base. |
| EvilDrPuma07-05-04, 03:29 PM | The description in the book calls Argonth a 'mobile fortress to help defend Breland...,' and considering how fast it can('t) go (2 mph standard, 10 mph maximum), it seems ill-suited as an attack platform. I'm sure it does carry air cavalry, and your guesses on Argonth's own armament seem pretty good to me. I'd regard Argonth itself as primarily defensive in focus, although it may be able to project power quite a distance from itself via hippogriff cavalry or whatnot. |
| Dauntless07-05-04, 07:23 PM | I see it more as a defensive emplacement. If you expected to be attacked in a certain area where you have no defenses, drive Argonth over and voila! Instant Fortress! (Take THAT Daern!) |
| Lord Arkhaven07-06-04, 04:19 PM | Argonth is truly a mighty idea. I would have the thing capable of smothering targets with beatdown. You could run a medievil fantasy version of Battlestar Galactica or Space Ship Yamamoto, the only limit is that its path seems fairly preset. What enemy could they fight? |
| Aervyper Venom07-06-04, 04:44 PM | To me it just seems like a land based air craft carrier. Anything that couldn't run 2mph could just be squished. I know that sounds stupid but it's a sad truth. I think all the casters definately could be able to store unused spells each day. Would make for a cool infirmary and weapons platform. The only attack that i think could possably work against it would be espionage to destroy the power source. |
| Mr Wesley07-06-04, 11:49 PM | I think Argonth would be a really good setting for one of the more intrigue/suspense adventures. It's a small population of people who know each other, but they're mainly all military types (I'm assuming). And I envision the insides as very cramped and claustrophobic. In a way, it's basically an Eberron equivalent of an aircraft carrier. Big and slow, but eminantly dangerous and nearly indestructable. I could seriously imagine a Hunt for Red October or Die Hard type of game in that setting. |
| KCDinc07-07-04, 12:57 AM | I would rule that the fortress can't really crush anything. The rationale being that it needs to land slowly and on realtively level ground in order to prevent damage to itself. I dont care how much magic is pumped into it, you land that thing with speed the structures WILL take damage. |
| Lord Arkhaven07-07-04, 09:13 AM | I guess it would depend on its lower composition. As I recall the picture it looks to be made of stone masonry. |
| Lofwyr07-10-04, 10:38 PM | I agree with Dauntless. It reminds of the Earthdawn gaming system. They were in the middle of a campaign story-arc just before 1st Ed got cancelled where a distant empire decided to come back and reclaim their long lost colony. To do it, they floated in this massive fortress/mountain thing and planted it right in the middle of the colony. They instantly had a fortified position, and could start patrolling/subjugating the locals to force local farmers to grow crops for the base. I would also put a section in it just for agents of the Citadel. A mobile base would be a great base of operations for Breland's version of the FBI/CIA's agents. As for weaponry, there was an old published spelljammer adventure that introduced a neat ship-mounted weapon on a small vessel shaped like a hummingbird. A mage inside the ship could cast magic missile at this crystal thing, which would absorb and magnify the magic. The tip of the hummingbird's nose would then fire the name number of missiles out at a target. The device essentially changed the damage scale of the spell from personal to ship sized. The Argonth could have some kind of device that applies metamagic feats to spells cast into them, like the ones that increase range or burst radius. I would keep the aerial cavalry idea too. Maybe the Asperii from Forgotten Realms? |
