Has anyone else considered the possibilities inherent here? We know that at least some usage of ariel riding beasts occurs in Ebberron (the pic of the wizard flying his eagle in Audair implies this. Now I doubt that almost any nation would have the ability to mount an entire fleet (just as the possibilities of a Airship Navy has been lost) but I can certainly see some limited usage in both war and peace.

It would be likely that most nations would be capable of mounting at least a small contingent of elite flying cavalry to fulfil such duties as spotting, limited bombardment, etc. While their actual fighting effect on a battle would be negligable, they would fulfil important intelligence duties and have the ability to harry airships. In a sense you would have a situation very similar to WW1, with small groups of flyers engaging each other above the air as the battles rage around them. After the war, the units might be disbanded, used to track down brigands and the like, sent to the few remaining wars (for Brelish or Kaius's armies) or bought out by the Airwright's guild as guardians for their airships...

Anyone else see a campaign idea here?

Unfortunately, the coolest option for aerial combat isn't available... although wyvern cavalry is still a possibility. I imagine that most 'aces' would be spellcasters, since ranged combat works best for aerial battles, but arrows wouldn't be particularly effective.

Although I personally think no fantasy war is complete without at least ONE dragon circling high above the battlefield in a casual display of power...
