Art as Inspiration [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-08-04, 01:44 AM To me there is nothing more inspiring than good fantasy art. Back in the day I came up with an entire party concept just from admiring the cover of the old module I7 Baltron's Beacon.

I found the art in 2E and a lot of the initial 3E stuff somewhat hit and miss. As a long-time gamer I fell in love with the more realistic styles of Elmore, Easley, and Parkinson. In 3E I find the art of Sam Wood most appealing.

That is why I am so thrilled with the art we have been seeing for Eberron. In particular the character portraits done by Steve Prescott are right up my street. Really excellent. :)

So what do you all think? Has any picture in particular inspired you in any particular way?

05-08-04, 02:23 AM I completely agree. Art is very important, the visualization of people and place can be difficult to reconcile the differences between two peoples mental imagery. Most recently, I have found the art in the Complete Warrior to be some of the best published by Wizards to date. I captures much of what my friends do.
I really like the Lord of the Rings footage. Not the battles and close-ups, but the flybys of New Zealand land features. So beautiful, just look (don't listen) at the intro flyby for the Two Towers. Wonderful, and the 3 hunters sequence.

Second edition was kind of lack luster, and kind of flat. Some of them hurt to look at.

I agree, Steve Prescott's ports rock. He did some good work in the Draconomicon as well. But by far my favorite D&D artist is Wayne Reynolds. WAR's art brings concepts, characters and/or monsters to life so well by depicting "action" not just poses- I'm thrilled that he is a part of Eberron's art-team-thingy...:)
