Artificer and Psionics [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-11-05, 03:11 AM In a world where the DM chooses the rule "Psionics is the same as magic" can an artificer recreate psionic per feats as normal/same as arcane means of recreation. Ergo, can an artificer make scrolls and potions/oils of psionic powers using the Scribe Scroll and Brew potion (respectivly)?

07-11-05, 09:20 AM By default, psionic/magic transparency does NOT imply this. Psionics and magic are still independent in that they come from different sources of power, require different Knowledge and (Spell|Psi)craft checks to use, &c. Transparency only implies that they can interoperate (like spell resistance and dispelling/negation). You cannot craft psionic items as a mage or artificer according to the standard rules.

Though it is a fairly trivial thing to house rule in, of course. (I rather like the fact that an artificer *can't* do anything he wants with psionics, though.)

This does seem to suggest that at least by default, psionic powers are not so easily "potion-ified", for example.

That, and scrolls are generally described as containing basically the last component of the arcane (or divine) spell-casting formula that had already been expended. Since psionic powers contain no such formula...

Sure they could. But they would have to take ranks in Use Psionic Device, and take the item creation feats for them seperately. Probably need to take Wild Talent first to count as being psionic enough though.

Bottom line, however, is that the Artificer can make any MAGIC item he wants, not Psionic. Although it would be very easy to make a Psionic Artificer if you so wanted. Just replace UMD with UPD, replace things like Encode Powerstone with Scribe Scroll, and Craft Wand with Craft Djore, and you're ready to go.

But no, can't have one that does both.
