| Black_Kaioshin02-25-05, 11:19 AM | My artificer wishes to be become a construct, so the Green Star Adept prestige class is reallt looking good. But I'm torn between whether or not I should take it. Half of a caster level progression hurts, not to mention the fact that I won't get acess to other item creation feats for free. I'm not really worried about craft reserve, seeing as I'll be draining alot of magic items for craft points. The arcane caster requirement has been snuffed, since my DM feels that it would make sense for an artificer to qualify, even if he isn't an arcane caster. I guess I'm asking for peoples advice. Should I enter into the prestige class? Or should I find some other means of becoming a construct? |

Does he want to be a construct or not? Which is more important to him: continuing his education as an artificer, or taking a few decades off in pursuit of immortality? Honestly, this is pure metagame thinking, because even though you're aware that you're not going to have more than maybe 20 levels, your artificer is not. As far as he knows, there is no reason not be become a construct and then continue to improve as an artificer. So the concern about caster progression is not your character's. It is yours. You need to play a character you enjoy, and that depends on what you enjoy playing. But other than that, it sounds like a question for the CO boards. |

Nevermind that artificer caster level isn't affected by "arcane" or "divine" caster level increases. It would have to be "artificer" caster level increases. As a house rule, I'd rule that the Effigy Master would increase an artificer's caster level, but that's the only one. |

Green Star Adept does make you a construct per the rules, but it's a magical transformation. Perhaps you should ask your DM to change the flavor to something like becoming a warforged. You aren't changing your race, but that could be the feel of it. You slowly replace parts as you progress through the PrC until you have relpaced your entire body with a construct body. You could still have a rare material requirement a la green star metal, so it might take specific side quests to retrieve the appropriate materials. You could easily substitute progression in Artificer or progression in an arcane spellcasting class. After all, you probably would be a better artificer if you went through the processof magically replacing body parts. You could also justify a penalty to social interaction until your transformation is complete - you look like a half construct monstrosity for a while. It could make for some good role playing. I agree with the above poster regarding motivation though. You sound like you belong on the CO board. |
| motorfirebox02-25-05, 03:47 PM | you could replace the green metal requirement with a schema requirement. instead of replacing parts of his body with living metal, he'd replace parts of his body with mechanical automata. gives sort of a steampunk feel to it. |
| Black_Kaioshin02-25-05, 10:49 PM | My artificer wishes to become a construct in order to escape death. She has studied the planes and knows the nature of the plane of death. She is horrified at the thought of being on that plane of despair and hopelessness. So, if she becomes a construct, she won't have to worry about dying of old age. For all intents and purposes, the prestige class is fully artificer-made. The class progression is artificer, not arcane in this campaign. I am concerned about the metagame ramifications mainly because it affects how useful I'll be to the party. |

In my opinion, the half rate spell progression is pretty nice, not something to scoff at. I don't think it is too much to sacrifice for the abilities the PrC gives, assuming that you make the best use of them. IMO, if you go GSA, you'll have to step up a bit in combat. The abilities it grants are very combat-based, with decent hit dice and base attack, as well as some very nice defensive abilities. So if you give up all that nice artificer ability, you're going to have to do something else. I would focus the artificer levels towards making you a better fighter as opposed to merely acting as back-up in a fight. Your days of standing in the back of the group with the arcane spellcasters are over. |
| Kennian02-26-05, 07:15 AM | Pah...you misguided fool! you're a artificer! YOU master the arcane...YOU master constructs.. you are a little god of the arcane MAKE YOU"RE OWN BODY... you dont need to take a class, just make a golem body and treat it like lichdom only, prolly not as risky. a couple of magic jar spells and a kick ass golem and bam...you're a walking machine.... you are a Artificer...your only limit is you're imagination and the will of the gods <and DM's :D> |
| Nedlum02-27-05, 05:03 PM | The DM only. This is Eberron, friend. The gods don't give a dam. |
| Raede02-27-05, 06:24 PM | play a warforged :P |
| Just another user02-27-05, 06:39 PM | If the problem is the spell progression there is the feat "praticed spellcaster" that increase your caster level by 4 ( but it is never higher of you character level, it is used by multiclassing characters or characters with a half level progression PrC). If your GM adapted the green star adepts for Artificers he will have no problem in doing the same for this feat. |

The flavor and mechanics of the class seem better suited to standard spellcasters. I lean to what Kennian suggested: build a better body. Several times, it's been suggested that mortals could transfer their souls into warforged (via Mind Switch, Mind Seed, Magic Jar, or using UMD on the artifact Circlet of Preservation and then using that on a warforged), but I don't think that's a necessary route. I'd instead model the new body on the lich template. Rather than negative energy, however, you infused your form with arcane power and sturdy materials. |
