An artificer must make a sucessful Use Magic Device check (DC 20 + caster level) to emulate each spell ....

Who's caster level? Not mine because I can't cast "Mending" or "Arcane eye"..
Is it a sorceres? A wizards? A Bard's? They all reach that level 4 spell at different levels.

Maybe it means + spell level? Makes more sense.

An artificier cannot actually cast these spells, they can only activate them from another source. Whether they created it or not there is an activation involved for each source. The spell level, not caster lvl, of the spell or spell-like effect he is emulating is the level for the check.

So, a fireball at 10d6 and a fireball at 5d6 both require a UMD DC of 20 + 3(3rd lvl spell). Hope that helps.

This isn't entirely correct. For the purpose of item creation only, an artificer can emulate spell effects without the need of another source. They cannot cast the spells normally.

This is wrong. The caster level is what is needed for the emulation level of the check. All item creation assumes that the creator used the cheapest method possible for creating the item. This means that they use wizard caster levels instead of sorcerer caster levels, for items made from the sorcerer/wizard spell list. Basically, at all times, an artificer can decide to create an item using the most efficient caster level possible.

Look at the example on page 32 in the ECS.

ECS
To create a bottle of air (caster level 7th), an artificer would need a check result of 27 or higer to emulate the water breathing pre-req.

If you wanted to make a wand of fireball, caster level 10th, you would need to make a UMD check of 30, not 23. Additionally, the item will cost more experience and money to make because the caster level is higher than standard.

What about spells like Tasha's Hidious Laughter, I think that might have been what the poster ment, Bards can learn it as a level 1 spell, wizards can't until they can cast level 2 spell, the bard can learn it a full level earlier.

...Bards can learn it as a level 1 spell, wizards can't until they can cast level 2 spell, the bard can learn it a full level earlier. What is confusing about this? The UMD check would be 21. As in 20 (base) + 1 (caster level of Bard). An artificer can emulate practically any spell from any list. Arcane, Divine, Bard, Druid, it doesn't matter. If the spell appears on multiple lists use the lowest number.

the caster level of the scroll, usually being the minimum for whoever made it.

eg. 2 if a bard made it and 3 if a wizard made it.

Ok thanks, that makes a lot more sense.
I guess this means a 1st level Artificer can create a scroll of fireball that does 10d6 damage. I'd just have to crit the UMD check =)

No, not at all. A first level artificer cannot make a scroll of fireball. The earliest an artificer can make a scroll of fireball is level 3, and the most damage that it can do is 3d6. The artificer would have to actually be level 10 in order to make a scroll of fireball that does 10d6.

In short, the artificer must meet all of the prereqs of a given item. For purposes of meeting prereqs, an artificer's caster level is counted as two levels higher than her actual level. For purposes of actually making an item, however, an artificer's actual level applies for all effects related to caster level, like damage, duration, etc etc.

An artificer must still emulate the other prereqs of an item in order to make it.

Edit:These prereqs can be more than spells required to make the item. An artificer can emulate race and alignment requirements, but cannot emulate feats, or skill point requirements.

Oh... ok that seems a lot more balanced =) Heh I was a bit scared there =)
