I fear the answer is no, unless the duration is at least one day, ala the Magecraft spell (which of course doesn't apply). Also, can an artificer Take 10 on his UMD checks while crafting? Here I presume the answer is "Sure -- why not?" EDIT: Arggh. The PHB says no Take 10 on UMD. It seems to me that a Level 1 Artificer is going to miss half or so of his UMD checks on crafting rolls, although he gets two tries per scroll. I wonder whether it's worth it to take Magical Aptitude AND UMD Skill Focus, which with CHA 18 lets you start with a +13 bonus. Use isn't that big an issue. You get an immediate extra bonus of +2, and if you fail you can almost always try again anyway. Crafting is what worries me. |

Second of all you cannot take 10 on UMD without the Skill Mastery class ability regardless of the circumstances. Look under the skill description in the PHB or the SRD. "Special: You cannot take 10 with this skill." So if your artificer is 13th level or more, then yes you may take ten on UMD checks. Otherwise, no. |
