| RagingDemon04-03-06, 07:26 PM | can an artificer qualify for the obtain familiar feat from complete arcane? this book came out before eberron campaign setting and the feat has a prerequisite of an arcane caster lvl of 3... i know that it' s up to the dm to use it or not but what do the rest of you think? would you let your party' s artificer get it? |
| Kid SixXx04-03-06, 07:49 PM | Artificers eventually gain access to homonculi, so I don't see why they'd need familiars. If this is about the construct familiars introduced in Dragon Magazine #341, then I'd just house rule the construct familiars to the available homonculi list. |
| RagingDemon04-03-06, 07:53 PM | yeah, i know... that' s what i told my player but he insists on letting him have one... |

Infusions don't count towards arcane or divine casting levels, so he wouldn't qualify for the feat. He does realize that if he has a familiar & a homonculus, he's pretty much a goner if both die at the same time, right? |
| RagingDemon04-04-06, 05:57 AM | i know about the familiar, but do you get penalized if your homonculus dies? |
| DarkWarriorKarg04-04-06, 09:09 AM | i know about the familiar, but do you get penalized if your homonculus dies? Yes... you get nasty damage. |
| Edymnion04-04-06, 10:00 AM | i know about the familiar, but do you get penalized if your homonculus dies?2d10 damage when it dies, no xp loss though. And no, while the Artificer could count as a generic 3rd level caster, they specifically cannot qualify as a divine/arcane caster, and as such cannot qualify for the feat. They would have to multiclass. But honestly, Homunculi > Familiars in just about every reguard. My Artificer has two of them now, and will likely make a few more before all is said and done. :) |
| Elderich04-04-06, 02:32 PM | If a player wants to spend a feat to get one then I think I would HOUSE RULE the feat to say caster level instead of only arcane. Why wouldnt a cleric have a familuar. Can anyone find a good reason not to? I can't, but perhaps I overlooked some sort of overpowered combo? And I am with Edymnion. I think Homocs, and constructs are better. |
