Hey everyone It's been a while since I was last on the boards due to issues with a player and the resulting disgust with the very idea of play DnD let alone DMing but I digress. The reason I am here today is to ask for some help in developing a coat of arms for my characters new dragon marked house.

Here is a little background info on the campaign to aid you.

I play a bard that had an abberant mark this mark was turned into a true mark to truly fulfill the requirements for 13 marks (not 13 houses) by a dying dragon and was spread to other members of my noble house through blood (the dragon touched me and it was instantly transfered to every member of my house that had abberant marks and a few who didn't.) The mark is psionic in nature rather than magical. The house plans to fill a role very similar to that filled by the Psi corps. in the TV show babylon 5 in that they will have to roles 1. the reading of minds to verify business transaction will be legit. and 2. to protect the minds of clients from intrusion by others. As I understand it from riddles I have solved in-game the quori are invading the world due to some kind of disease spreading through the dream realm. this disease or whatever is causing insanity to spread I think keep in mind this is mostly conjecture on my part.

Anyway I was asked to develop a coat of arms for my fledgling house if any one could help me develop this and or draw something up (I have no artistic skill myself) I would appreciate it very much.

if you have the 13th mark, then what happens to Vol? In addition, does a 13th moon return and what plane does it connect with?

The more info you provide, the more meaningful a sketch someone can provide:

What is the house's name?
Where is the house based?
What race(s) is the house?

The coats of arms of the Twelve typically feature a Magical Beast (hydra, griffon, kraken, etc) surrounded by various implements appropriate to the house's area of expertise. So consider:

What Magical Beasts are associated with psionics, or dreams?
What tools or icons represent the house's goals? (Psicrystals? Dorjes? Dreamcatchers?)
What colors are associated with the house or its beast?

Something else that may affect the design is the house's history. Are they making a totally new coat of arms, or modifying an older one?

You would have to take this up with my DM I as a player do not have this information.

to answer the first three questions they are in order
1.currently Ir'Baines
2. based mainly in Aundair.
3. their race is human.
I don't know off hand the answers to the other three questions but the last statement I can give a bit of an answer to.

They were originally a minor noble house of aundair that rose to power during the war as other houses died out. They have had a long secret tradition of developing abberant marks among the family that the royal house of aundair has used to keep them loyal and useful.
I think a complete change of the current coat of arms would be best to show thier new found freedom from the nightmare that their family was once under before the mark changed and the new disassociation with the abberant mark.
The original marks made them great troops in battle as secret weapons for aundair. I picture the family as keeping low on the political radar so the aundair court could easily disavow knowledge should their secret come to life. however, as more and more noble houses fell in battle they rose in power with the non-marked members being the face of the family. Due to this rise in power it was quite fortunate the mark changed when it did before the secret was found out.

See, that's enough to start the ball rolling. :)

I can't promise anything of quality, but I'll raid the Monster Manuals and see if there's a magical beast that says "House Baines." (Once they're accepted, it'll be d'Baines, won't it? Or are they going to go through a bit of a name change, too?)

As I understand it from the DM my family is still feeling the waters with the other house at this time due to the MANY ramifications inmplied in the introduction of a new house into the world my character only recieves sporadic reports from his father due to me being in Xen'drick and everyone else being spread across aundair and the rest of the continent. He has hinted that the serpintine table knows of us but though my character wouldn't know of that group it makes since that they would know of us from even before the war. The other problem that I see that my DM may have already worked out is what other houses would align with us if any and that whole treaty and it's affect on my family since we never signed it i.e. would we loose our lands and such. Officially we are still known as Ir'Baines but I personally like the idea of keeping the name of Baines due to where the story seems to be going (WE ARE THE BAINE OF THE QUORI LOL.)

I am also interested in hearing what others think of this story so far from what I have posted. Does this sound like a game or story idea others would like to play in (I am thoroughly enjoying it so far)?

Here's a rough draft-- just line art, no colors.
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc157/alasrenfield/bainescrest.gifAn explanation: The rapier and grape bunches represent the family's noble Aundairan origins; the crystal topped staff/big dorje represent their psionic aspect. The heraldric beast, the bulette (land shark) is a powerful titan that emerges suddenly from the ground-- much as this house has/will. I contemplated the brain mole, but the bulette is a) in the basic Monster Manual and b) more likely to inspire respect. :) If I were to color it, it'd be predominantly tawny earth colors with a bit of purple and maybe some blue (green?) for the crystal.

If you like it, lemme know. If you don't, it was good practice. :)

In that case I'll color it. :)

I'll also see if I can squeeze in a "traditional" version of the arms-- that is, a really simple "argent, a bulette passant ecailles." I use ecailles here to mean scales, which will just be a textured "bulette brown."

Colored it:http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc157/alasrenfield/bainescrestcolor.jpgSo, I'm not totally thrilled with the bulette's hide, but you get the general idea. We're going for a slightly nobler look than the one in the Monster Manual, yeah? :)

PS: I'm going to redo that hide after all. Striations are apparently not the way to indicate a hard carapace. I'm going to try for a flecked, mottled look instead.

I think it looks great but if you think you can do even better then I won't complain. My DM loves it and mentioned something about posting on here to tell you that as well but he hasn't so I'll say it for him.

Altered:
http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc157/alasrenfield/bainescrestcolorb.jpgNow the color's a little peculiar, but it has more of the hard texture I was going for. And you, of course, have more of a choice. :)

(Oops-- gotta fix that eye when I get home.)

From the DM of the game Korcheck was speaking of Thank You for the coat of arms. I think what you did was awsome and I totally agree with all of your symbology.

Well, can't ask for better than that, can I? :D

Incidentally, this whole thing has me thinking about Khorvairan heraldry in general. Think I may have to write up something for my own campaign.

My DM and I disagree on the colors. I like the newest one because I think it lends more to the idea of psi abilities with the blue (although I would like to see the red eyes applied to the new one instead of the clear one) He believes the original was better due to it fitting more to the actual color of a bullette. Due to this I have printed out both and until we both come to an agreement I will stick to the story line idea that it is still an in house debate, which sounds just like what an Aundairan noble house would do (arguing over color schemes before wondering how to address the world with their exsistance) in my opinion. lol
