...about the Valenar Riding Horse. I'm currently trying to come up with stats for a Valenar Warhorse, and am comparing the VRH to the Light Horse in MM. Now the problem. I didn't notice before, but the VRH has +24 to its Jump checks! Is this correct? Somehow, I think not, but would like some word from someone. If the VRH is based off of the Light Horse, it's skills should be as follows:

Listen +5, Spot +5 (due to the increase in WIS)

However, I'm confused as to where the 22 ranks (Minus the +2 for STR) in Jump came from. That is way more ranks than an animal of 3 Hit Dice should have.

Now, technically even the Light Horse has more skill ranks than it should, as with an INT of 2 it should only receive the minimum 1 rank per HD, thus giving it 3 ranks, which would mean that as written in the MM it has 3 more ranks than it should. But the VRH has 25 more ranks than a 3 HD animal should have. Now, if this is just a design decision I'm cool with that, I just want to be sure.

You're forgetting that you get a +4 to jump checks for every 10 feet above 30 your speed is. So, with a speed of 80, a Valenar Riding Horse is getting a +20 to jump checks,

[(80-30)/10]*4=20

so I guess it has 2 ranks in jump, or it gets some other sort of +2 modifier. I want to say that animals don't get any skill ranks, but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, its speed is where most of the horse's jump bonus is coming from.

Don't forget that the Run feat also provides a +4 bonus to jumps made with a running start. That might be where that additional bonus is coming from. It should be
20 (bonus from movement) + 4 (bonus from run feat) +2 (str bonus) = 26.

Thus the horse has 2 ranks in spot and listen for a total of 4 skill points.
