Aureon's Spellshard [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been working on a high-level mage and I've had a shock when I read the item "Aureon's Spellshard" in the ECS.
The basics is that the cost to scribe a spell is 150gp times spell level (50*level to copy it from a wizard, and 100 gp per page to write it into your book).
Now, the item I'm referring to (Page 265 ECS), the Aureon's Spellshard says "This item holds the equivilant of 500 pages of spells, and a wizard may scribe spells in it without paying the usual material component cost..."
Now, this item costs a paultry 6250gp.
But if my math is right, the savings you make (500 pages free, at 100gp per page) results in a total savings on spellbooks of 50,000gp!!

This can't be right, can it? Am I reading it wrong? It seems to be pretty self-explanitory, but I can't help but think I'm overlooking something.

To be fair, the costs to scribe spells are ridiculous, and Bigby's Blessed Book in the DMG reduced them as well.

Yes, I know the latter part. It's still a staggering gain. That means I can get triple the amount of spells

01-25-07, 02:43 AM Aureon's Spellshard is essentially a half-capacity and half-price version of the Boccob's Blessed Book. Having one or the other is a serious priority for most wizards, precisely because of the savings involved.

01-25-07, 11:08 AM Remember that the spells that a Wizard starts with at 1st level and the 2 spells/level he gains past that do not cost any gold.
So the actual savings depend highly on how often your Wizard gets to scribe new spells into his book from external sources.

Right. IMC unless a wizard is a member of some arcane group (like the Arcane Congress or the Twelve) he doesn't have free access to copy any spells he wants into his book, regardless how much money he has, and is limited to found scrolls, captured books from enemy wizards, and the like. Also don't overlook the other benefit of a Spellshard, namely that you're carrying a 1/2-pound crystal instead of a 3-pound book.
