I have a 3rd level Rogue that bears the Lesser mark of Passage and I am aiming at this prestige class. My DM has suggested that to become a Blade I should earn my stripes.

Whats a good way for to achieve this? Suggestions?

I'm going to assume your character is playing in "contemporary" Eberron, circa 998 YK. Were you playing during the Last War, it becomes a bit more straightforward (a lot more excuses for Orien to have an overtly military arm).

In any case, the Dragonmarked entry on the Blades of Orien is surprisingly...sparse, when it comes to what role they have in the house, beyond specialty guards and couriers. They would seem to make particularly good "troubleshooters," sent in to handle problems and stay "in house," as it were.

So I guess the things you should do to earn your way in would be to focus on the "troubleshooter and specialty courier" type jobs. Handle them well, and discreetly. And hey, Favored In House can always help, too (Favored in this case interpreted as "you're a favorite go-to to get things done...but by the same token, you're also easily able to get what you need to do your job")... Pull some senior Orien butt out of the fire a few times, prove that you're a capable problem-solver. That sort of thing.

I assume you can backstory this? Or is it something you're going to need to try and work with the GM on bringing up during play?

If it's something that's got to come up in play, nothing will work better than working together with the GM to brainstorm something. "Here's a couple ideas I came up with...what do you think? What sorts of things do you think I'd need to do to become a Sword of Orien? What can we do to help have those things happen in-game?"

Cloud Divider is right - you should "earn your stripes" by performing a particularly difficult task for your House that showcases your martial abilities.

Perhaps Orien is running a caravan to <insert evil/violent/warlike place here> and it must be protected at all costs - no caravan they've sent to date has made it to its destination? If not cargo - maybe a traveler?

Perhaps a young elven girl with the Mark of Death has spontaneously appeared in Valenar? The Twelve has requested House Orien send a discreet agent to protect the child and safeguard her on a journey to the Twelve's enclave?

Or... Maybe an enemy of the House needs to be "taken out"? Particularly, a traitor or excoriate who is now selling House secrets? This problem must be dealt with... in House.
