The question on how to pronounce Cyre in another thread got me thinking about the topic.

I'm curious about how Breland sounds. I think most people think it sounds like "Bree" and "Land", but since it's named after the Galifar Princess Brey I have to wonder.

Is it Bree-Land or Brey-Land. I've been using Brey-Land with syllable Brey rhyming with Prey.

Brey rhyming with prey is how I say it as well. I also think Kieth had a list of how he pronounced the countries on the old AKB thread and he had it rhyming with prey as well.

I feel like the pronunciation of the second syllable as obviously "land" makes the whole thing sound silly. It reminds me of Tomorrow Land and Fantasy Land, etc. from Disney.

I pronounce it BREH-lund, and the adjective Breh-LUND-ish. It just sounds more realistic to me.

Brel-ind.

Then again, I'm one of the wierdos that pronounces Cyre "Sigh-ree" and Aerenal "Air-eh-nul". That's my very thick Krynnish accent showing through, methinks.

BREH-lund, BRE-lish. At least, that's how it is to me.

Also, Cyre = sire, and Aerenal, well, it's "Eer-en-ahl," properly, the AE device is always "ee." Thus, "daemon" = "demon."

Here's an old pronunciation guide from Keith:Well, it's possible that Bill or James have different ideas (and various names have evolved over the course of the development of the setting, thus I am not the originator of all names) but here's how I pronounce them in *my* campaign.

Eberron (EB-bur-on)
Aundair (Awn-DARE)
Talenta (TUH-len-tuh)
Valenar (VAL-en-ar)
Lhazaar (Lah-ZAR)
Karrnath (KAR-nath)
Breland (BREL-und)
Zilargo (Zil-AR-go)
Q'barra (KUH-BAR-ruh)
Sarlona (Sar-LONE-nuh)
Xen'drik (ZEN-drik)
Thrane (Rhymes with "train")
Riedra (ruh-EE-dra)
Adar (uh-DAR)
Cyre (SEER-ee)
Aerenal (EAR-en-al)
Argonnessen (AR-gon-NESS-en)
The Shadow Marches (thee-SHA-doh-MAR-ches)

... OK, perhaps everyone agrees on that last one...Those generally work for me. Though I still find myself saying Xen'drik as "Shen'drik" and "Aerenal" as "AIR-en-al." And "Riedra" as "ruh-EE-dra" can't be right... I say it as "Ree-AY-dra."
I feel like the pronunciation of the second syllable as obviously "land" makes the whole thing sound silly. It reminds me of Tomorrow Land and Fantasy Land... I pronounce it BREH-lund, and the adjective Breh-LUND-ish.I'd say I do something in between, kind of like how I pronounce the "land" in "Scotland."

Breland (BREL-und)
So is that BREL as in swell or well?
I like that much better if it is. Even if it's not, Im still going that way with it. I agree with Ormazd I feel like the pronunciation of the second syllable as obviously "land" makes the whole thing sound silly. It reminds me of Tomorrow Land and Fantasy Land, etc. from Disney.
every time I said "Brey (sounding like prey) land" I cringed.

Thanks Johnny, I've been looking for that pronunciation key.
I missed your posts for a while where were you?

Aerenal, well, it's "Eer-en-ahl," properly, the AE device is always "ee." Thus, "daemon" = "demon."

Not exactly. Many people use AY for AE, and say day-mon instead of dee-mon. Which has the added bonus of avoiding confusions with demon.

Also et caetera, usually seen in its abbreviated form etc., is roughly pronounced etsay-tay-rah, if you follow latin pronounciation guides.

Actually, it's pronounced et se-teh-ruh, because it's spelled cetera , not caetera . Although I do agree with your original point that -ae- is not always pronounced -ee. In fact, in Latin and Greek it is usually pronounced -aye-, thus daemon is actually pronounced dy-MON.

I've been saying it all as one syllable. Kind of like a cat's meow, pretty much the way it's spelled.

I'm not sure where it was posted originally, Steamweaver, but here's the link-up to the section of Jhonen Olain's Eberron Journal where I originally saw the pronunciation guild Johnny shared above.

http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/development.html

It's in the "Pronunciation" section of that article.

being of Welsh descent, I always thought Cyre was a hard C, like KU-re
None of them soft c's for Cymru! :)

But that would make Cyre sound like "Krrr" I say Sere, or sear, as in "aaaaaahhh! my hand has been burned tuo a cinder and it vexeth me greatly!"

I always said BREH-lund too, although by the book modern english rules it should be brayland/braylund. It sounds silly though, having deliberately said it too myself after reading the post.

The problem I have with Cymru is that it reminds me strongly of a rather rude word. I just cannot break the association.

For the record, I hate hearing "Sel-tic"

Lhazaar (Lah-ZAR)
Karrnath (KAR-nath)

BREL-und? BREL, as in rhymes with brail? For me at least, its Bree-la/und. Its not really an A, not really a U. Maybe something more like BREE-lend.
Zilargo (Zil-AR-go)I'm differant here too. I pronounce it ZEE-lhar-go.
Q'barra (KUH-BAR-ruh)No Kuh in mine, its just a hard KAY-bar-ruh
Sarlona (Sar-LONE-nuh)
Xen'drik (ZEN-drik)
Thrane (Rhymes with "train")
Riedra (ruh-EE-dra)
Adar (uh-DAR)A-dhar here.
Cyre (SEER-ee)Sear, as in you sear the meat while cooking it.

BRE-lund

Cyre rhymes with pyre

A-un-dare

AD-ar

RIE-dru

TA-len-tu

In all of those but Aundair, the "u" is the same sound as one pronunciation of the "e" in "the".

BREL, or BREHL (Pronounce the h )

the "und" is a schwa.i.e. a partially pronounced "a". something that many people have initial problems with. So we say "if in doubt, schwa" (Like Arnie)

If you want to get technical the Ae in Aerenal is supposed to be pronounced like the Y from SKY thus the word is Y-ren-al.
