Bringing back Scimitar [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-04-05, 08:29 AM It's good that Whispers ties into Grasp, if only through that one recurring character. However, in my own campaign I have a slight problem: Scimitar is dead. On the lightning rail she tried to flee but (long story) got eaten by a mimic. I thought it was a good and clever thing to happen. However, finding out that she got brought back, I'm now trying desperately to figure out how. I've boiled it down to three basic options:

1) "But...you're dead!" "I got better.": Garrow used a scroll of resurrection on her. Pretty easy, the only problem with this is that she should logically be weaker, not stronger.

2) The Evil(er) Twin: This Scimitar (we shall call her Scimitar II) is actually Scimitar I's "twin sister," being identical models made from the same creation forge. Naturally, she wants revenge.

3) The Boba Fett Solution: Her armor made her difficult to digest, and in desperation she used a thermal det...er...vial of alchemist's fire to get it to throw her up so she could escape.

02-04-05, 08:46 AM Or 4. Make up a new severly groovy character to go with your adventure. Maybe usable as a plot hook for future campaigns.

I'd go with Evil Twin if you don't want to work on it too much. Maybe it's more a title than a name.

"It seems Scimitar has Fallen in Thrane. I want you all to work harder so her sacrifice is not in vain. As of now, Kukri is the new Scimitar, Longsword is the new Kukri, Broadsword is the new Longsword, Braid Blade is the new Broadsword..." and so fourth.

02-04-05, 09:19 AM Hrm...your idea is good, except that so far everyone with a name like that has had weapon focus (what's my name again?). I also want that moment of shock when they recognize Scimitar as the same one they killed on the lightning rail, so no #4.

I'm personally leaning towards #2 though. I'm liking the idea of a vengeful warforged twin.

I have to say, this is a really cool idea for the Lord of Blades rank scheme. So rather than having sergeants, lieutenants, and generals, he has Daggers, Scimitars, and Greatswords (perhaps something more interesting and less generic like Claymore). Maybe his Warforged Juggernauts get ranks like Mace, Flail, and Maul. You could even throw in a sub-meaning of general area of specialty - a Rapier is a LoB Intelligence Officer, for instance.

It'd certainly give his title a bit more of a literal meaning, too, as the Commander of an army of living weapons.

So rather than having sergeants, lieutenants, and generals, he has Daggers, Scimitars, and Greatswords (perhaps something more interesting and less generic like Claymore). Maybe his Warforged Juggernauts get ranks like Mace, Flail, and Maul. You could even throw in a sub-meaning of general area of specialty - a Rapier is a LoB Intelligence Officer, for instance.

Check out the back issue of Dungeon with the LoB statted as the Critical Threat. It says that the Warforged under the LoB's command often take name designations that sound like bladed weapons, but no one knows whether or not it's a system of rank.

Known LoB agents from the Modules: Sabre, Scimitar.

Agents I have made: Scalpel (Rogue & LoB's spymaster), Razor (a TWF Ranger), Javelin (a misnomer as he is an Archery Focus Ranger with an Armbow), Runeblade ( A Female Personality Wizard & companion to the LoB), Faith's Edge (A Cleric and Spiritual Advisor to the LoB), Cleaver & Bloodlance (a pair of LoB elite bodyguards).

02-04-05, 03:14 PM Have her reappear with a pitted appearance, like her armored hide has suffered from disgestive acids. The "Scarred Scimitar" would be even more intimidating.

02-04-05, 03:49 PM Perhaps the Mimic only chewed on Scimitar for awhile, like a piece of candy, and eventually spit him out.

02-04-05, 06:50 PM Actually, I don't see this as a problem at all. One of the great customs of Pulp Noir storytelling is the sudden and dramatic reappearance of old enemies, even if the've already been "killed" once or twice.

By the time they get to the end of GotEC, the party should be a bit frustrated with how many times they've had to "kill" Garrow (once in Rose Quarry, once in Whitehearth, once aboard the airship, and now again in the Temple) and now they learn that Scimitar isn't dead either (my 'Forged in my party actually Bull Rushed Scimitar through a window of the coach)... I don't know about anyone else, but I know my players are going to be just a bit annoyed that nobody they kill stays dead.

But that's part of the fun of the genre.

Maybe the first one that fell in was a changling that was hired by the real Scimitar.

02-05-05, 06:05 PM I am willing to bet warforged have all kinds of twins, but the family bond thing you are playing off of seems kind of absurd.
Just plug in a new warforged and be done with it. The drama will be lost on the players anyway.
Garrow fits the bill as the reoccuring bad guy well ehough.
